I am having issues with my 580 crashing in certain games. The only common denominator I can come up with is they are all DX 10 (Crysis, Crysis WH, and Just Cause 2). I was able to play thru Metro 2033 in DX 11 with all eye candy turned on with not a single crash. I have also played DX 9 games Mass Effect and Amnesia with no crashes. When the games crash the screen freezes and the same pattern of artifacts appear on the screen. The sound loops sometimes or continues to play in the background. I have tried reinstalling the drivers numerous times using driver sweeper and also have not installed the Nvidia HD audio drivers. I have tried the 2 different drivers released for the GTX 580. I am able to run 3D Mark 11 and Heaven benchmarks with no issues. I ran the EVGA OC scanner for 30 minutes with no artifacts. I also monitored the temps with Precision and temps are always below 80 C. Any ideas or suggestions as to what is happening?. Thanks for your help.

Does Crysis work in DX9? If you can keep playing in DX9 for an hr without crashing, then it's probably a DX10 problem. Otherwise, it could be drivers or hardware related.
Also, how long are you running Heaven? 1 benchmark alone is not enough to prove stability. Try to let Heaven run for at least 30 minutes to confirm everything is stable.

Crysis does have an alternative DX9 mode. I'm not too sure about WH though.

Thanks for the response....I will have to reinstall Crysis to try the DX 9 path you described. I did run Heaven for a few passes with different tessellation settings with no issues, but I'll try running in for 30 minutes or more over the weekend.

If nothing else works try reinstalling Windows. (I once had some trouble with DX10 and I reinstalled windows and it worked fine)

Thanks RJohnson11......How do you uninstall DX on a computer? Is it in the control panel? I always thought you couldn't uninstall it and you just installed new versions over the old. When I tired to install this it told me I was running a newer version already and there was no need to update

Another update.......I tryed playing around with Heaven for a while and noticed I was able to run the bench in both Direct X 9 and 11 settings with no issue but when I switch to DX 10 the benchmark doesn't even load....It just goes to a black screen and nothing happens.....When I switch back to DX 11 the program runs again. I'm so perplexed.....is it possible that DX 10 is broken in my windows install or in the card itself? Thanks....PS I was able to run Vantage on the card when I first got it, and scored P28000 or so with no graphic problems. Ok sorry for the edit, but when I rebooted my computer and went back into heaven I was able to run it in DX 10 mode. Not sure if this is just a normal limitation of the bench or part of the overall problem

Hi, i also own a new gtx580 and i've been having the exact same problem. I've been getting random crashes in the following games: Just cause 2, Crysis and Warhead in dx10 mode only, Far cry 2 in dx10 mode only.
I'm able to run metro 2033 and AvP in dx11 all maxed out with no problem, so it seems to me it's a driver/directx10 problem.
If you guys know any solution to this i'd love to hear about it.

Ive seen some threads on the Nvidia forums website with people complaining of the exact same issue. I'm feeling more confident that its a driver issue and not a hardware issue.

My guess would be the soundcard, and the Audigy ZS Creative drivers. Try pulling it out, unistalling ALL the creative drivers and testing

I had no issue with these games when I played them on my GTX 285. It seems strange that the sound card would be doing this all of a sudden with my new GTX 580. I'll give it a try though.

Hey guys its been a while, lets get to what fixed it for me. DX10 and DX11 would lock up on me and play sounds in the background after no more then a minute. DX9 was usually alright.
I tried all the driver reinstalls suggested, removed HD audio elements, reinstalled Windows 7 and nothing worked still the same crashing. Turning off HPET did help DX11 though I could actually finish a loop of Heaven.
My cards came factory overclocked from MSI (823, 2138) so I checked the voltage they were using, which was 1012mV. This was simply to low. I increased it to 1088mV and DX10 and DX11 run flawlessly now. I ran Heaven in DX10 and DX11 for over a hour and played Crysis Warhead for a hour with no crashes or lockups. There is a thread in this forum with a 580 overclock spreadsheet that can help you dial in the voltage.
Hope this helps you, I am going to go destroy Crysis at 6144 x 1152 resolutions with some eyecandy finally.

Hi, i tried some things in just cause 2 and turning off motion blur seems to have fixed the crashes for me.
Motion blur is in the display options, try turning it off and let me know if it works.

I have tried the 266.58 and the first 2 WHQL certified ones that were released for the 580(can't remember the numbers). I noticed in Just Cause 2 and Crysis that the games run fine for 90% of the time but at certain points it will lock up, usually at the same location over and over. Most of the crashes in JC2 happened when I got in a helicopter and started to fly. Crysis would crash at the same point in a level over and over. I'll try turning off motion blur in JC2 to see if it helps at all. Right now I am playing Dead Space and have not had a single crash or issue so far.

I am also having issues with DX10 and the 580. I have the stock 580 and latest drivers. I am playing Two Worlds 2 and on the forums for the game, anyone whose is having lock-ups happen to have a 580 and running in DX10 mode. The game also has DX9 and there have been no issues for me with that, but the common thing that happens is that after about 20-30mins it just locks up. Running under DX9 it does not do this. Many on the Two Worlds 2 forums are pointing the finger to the driver as others that have used DX10 with other cards are not having this issue. It is mainly for those that have DX10 and a 580.
To hear others are having issues with the 580 as well as DX10 seems to me that there is an issue with the driver for the card that is causing something to go wacky (yeah technical aint I...lol).
When I get a chance I will play Metro 2033 in DX11 to see if there are issues with that, but as the above poster said, he did that and no issues, but it is worth a try.

I have 2 570sc cards and I get the black screen in 2worlds2 as well. I can play the DX9 version all day however.
I have the latest detenators loaded.

Alot of games will have a directx version in their installation files folders you can choose to use to update directx. But aside from that I would blame the Driver, Nvidia cannot even implement 3D correctly at this point or HDMI audio.

I have been having similar issue running World of Warcraft. Black screens, and locking up. It does clear on it's own, but once it startes doing it, it starts repeating it fairly close together. I look in the event logs, and it says the video card driver recovered from an error. (I don't have the machine in front of me at the moment, so I don't have the exact wording) I was running Nvidia 2.63 drivers, and upgraded to 2.66. It got really bad, so I went back to 2.63, and the crashing is still frequent. I have started using driver sweeper available up on Guru3d.com to help, and it seems to be better when using it, but still getting errors this time around. I uninstall the driver, and then reboot it into safe mode, and run driver sweeper, which scans the drive, and finds all instances of the drivers, and removes them. (Including leftovers in the registry, and all over the drive.) I then reboot, and install the drivers. This has worked fairly well in the past, but this last time around, it does not seem to work too well.
My EVGA GTX 275 Superclocked ran fine. I wish this did.

I tried turning off motion blur in Just Cause 2 and was able to complete the game(maybe 20 more hours worth) with only one screen lock up. This time the screen just froze and I had to restart my computer. I recently reinstalled windows onto a SSD and will see if the issue continues. I am currently playing Fallout 3 (DX 9) and have not had a single crash.

Hi again, it appears my card wasn't stable at the stock clocks with stock voltages, so i decided to incriese voltage a bit and see if the crashes continued and apparently it's stable now.
I ran crysis benchmark on very high dx10 more for one and a half hours and it didn't crash, also played jc2 with motion blur on and everything for 20 mins and didn't crash. I guess it's stable now but i'll keep doing more tests when i have time just to make sure.
Be carefull with the voltage as you may damage your card.

i can confirm this issue. i simply increased the voltages from 1012 stock to 1025 in afterburner and the crashes in dx10 are gone!
so appearantly the voltages have been set too low from the factory. what do i need to do here? ideally for me i would like evga to supply a bios flash utility that slightly increases the voltages but i guess i will have to fork out some cash for rma shipping fees....

i didn't expect it too, your issue was obviously hardware in origin, there are other Dx10 only crashes though.

googling around it appears this is a widespread issue and even an rma may not solve it. the replacement card may still be undervolted. even purchasing a new card runs the risk of it being undervolted.
would really like an evga bios flash hot-fix that increases the base voltages 12 miliamps.

Yeah this is still happening to me. I have my cards overclocked and can run any game under teh sun sun in DX11 or DX9 with no issues for hours and hours...but put it to DX10 and withing 10-15 minutes I get a crash. I have 2 580's one I got at the beginning of the year which crashed in DX10. Just got a second card last week and tested it alone in DX10 and the same thing.
My voltage is good as I said I can play any game in any mode other than DX10. Even running Unigine for over 2 hours I dont get a crash and that really pushes the GPU. I wish EVGA would say something about this issue or for them to go to Nvidia about it. I have some DX9/DX10 games that look so much better in DX10, but I cant play them due to the crashing.

my gtx 580 is from the first batches released. when did you get the second gtx 580? have you tried applying 12+ milliamp of voltage at stock clocks and test again? the voltage increase should stabilize the card. i just borrowed a vanila gtx 570 and this card does not crash. it was recenly purchased and its by galaxy brand. lets keep this thread alive. i think we deserve a bios reflash from evga to up the voltages by 12 miliamps instead of rma'ing these cards for nothing!

Yeah this is still happening to me. I have my cards overclocked and can run any game under teh sun sun in DX11 or DX9 with no issues for hours and hours...but put it to DX10 and withing 10-15 minutes I get a crash. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2488113 Direct3D 11 = Direct3D10 + hull shaders, tesselation and HDR compression if d3d11 isn't crashing, DirectX or windows itself is the problem.
