My new TV supports 4k 120hz (Samsung Q80T QLED) It has to be via the game HDMI port, and I know that an ultra-high speed HDMI cable is needed (to support the HDMI 2.1 connection that is needed for 4k 120hz) I also know that my card doesn't have HDMI 2.1 but does have a displayport 1.4 that can give 4k/120hz.
Does anyone know if I could find an Displayport 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adaptor, could I use it to run at 4k/120hz? Or have tested such a thing? I know HDMI 2.1 is pretty new, and I'm not even sure adapters for it exist yet.

I remember hearing there were active converter cables coming to do such a thing. However while you may be able to get it to output 4k 120Hz with an adapter you'll be hard pressed to actually play anything but eSports games at 4K 120Hz on a GTX 1080 Ti. Hell even a RTX 2080 Ti will struggle to do 4K 120Hz in most modern AAA games.

You should be able to do 4k 120hz now just using hdmi 2.0b (which is what the hdmi 1080 ti output is) @ 4:2:2 chroma @ 8 bits per channel with the correct hdmi cable. To use rgb full or 4:4:4 you'll need to wait until the next gen of cards are released as there aren't any converters available to convert dp 1.4 to to hdmi 2.1 yet.

OK, so no convertors yet, that's what I noticed as well when I looked around for them. I did find that ultra-high speed HDMI cables (required for HMDI 2.1) are out, so I got one of those, so that should work, as it has even higher bandwidth than the one you linked.

It is really nice that TV's are starting to have features like 120hz at 4K. We will probably be at that point in the next generation of graphics cards to really needing it and probably in the next generation of consoles we will see a upgrade to support 120hz gameplay. I also think we might see 120hz video becoming a thing as moving to 8K really doesn't offer that much improvement in visual quality other then on about 55" screens and bigger.

I wasn't about to get it to work,even with a HDMI 2.1 cable, I think that even if the TV, the cable, and the connection type all support it, it could be that an nvidia card doesn't want to do 4k/120hz over HDMI, even if the bandwidth can do it with reduced color data. I could try to dig in deeper to see what the card supports over it's HDMI connection, and if it's limited in ways other than just what HDMI 20.b can do

found a detailed FAQ: https://www.evga.com/support/faq/FAQdetails.aspx?faqid=59486 shows that 120hz isn't possible for the HDMI connection (even though I've managed to do it at 1080p?) which seems to apply even to the 20 series, regardless it seems this is limited to some GPU that isn't yet released, assuming the 30 series will have HDMI 2.1

Looks like this is able to do it today
You may want to sift through the comments on amazon and see if anyone got it working with your specific TV. Often times these cables are not tested properly across multiple devices. they just use one test TV and if it works they stamp it good and start production.

Im sorry for bringing this topic from the dead.
I live in Brazil, GPUs are crazyyyyyyy expensive here. I bought a GTX 1080ti like in October. Then I bought last month a LG Oled C1. For comparison, the TV cost me R$5500, the GTX 1080TI cost me R$4500. So yeah, gpus are expensive.
Then I realized I couldnt run it @120Hz 4k cause no HDMI 2.1, yada yada. I rly don't wanna upgrade GPU again, especially because my whole rig is kinda outdated. Its a generation 5 i7.
I read here I could actually run it @120Hz if I downgraded my colours (its setto 4:2:0). Which I did, and it worked, but kinda weird. When I was in the nvidia settings I couldn't get it up to 120Hz, the most Hz I could set it on the nVidia Control Panel was 60Hz. But then I set it to 120Hz on the Windows display settings. There I could actually select all the way to 120Hz. Have I done something wrong? What happens if I go this route with the full RGB colors? Can I damage something? Is 4:2:2 doable?

The poster who claimed you could run 4:4:4 RGB at 120hz @ 4k was wrong. You can run using using Chroma subsampling the same as you can run a higher bit depth using chroma subsampling to reduce the bandwidth. Trying out 120hz at full RGB won't cause any damage. The display will go black for around 15 seconds then reset. No different than when you have set an up and unsupported resolution.
