Called the helpline today to get my RMA ongoing and I was said on the phone that the fix is clearly hardware. I'm surprised to see that the model number is not impacted (What about traceability, ISO requirements...).

Imo i think EVGA should RMA all the faulty cards free of charge, regardless of where in the world they were bought from. At least that way EVGA,S legendary aftercare service remains intact

Well unfortunately my FTW has done the same thing a couple of times. Fans at full speed and PC has to be restarted. I haven't had any issues since switching the BIOS switch to the 130% Power setting.  I'll wait to see how it goes since I'm in Australia and would have to RMA through Taiwan I think.
Has anybody tested between BIOS's?

You may be on to something there. Was thinking the same thing. Finally reinstalled one card last night and did some heavy overclocking and benches. Ran max of 2177mhz for a min before clocking down to 2164. No black screens after many firestrike passes. It has done the black screen before but I'm unsure which card it was as I tested one at a time and prior was using the default bios as I was unaware att that the slave bios allowed for +130 power. Max voltage that was used was 1.094v.

This is a hybrid 1080 ftw.

2 different cards. One will idle at 27c and max load tempt at 42c and clock max at 2088 and the other will idle at 32c and max out at 47c and max clocks is I guess 2177 but will level off at 2164.

Trust me.. all I hear is cards coming back at slower speeds so I'm in no hurry and want to make sure I have this problem while using.the slave bios.

It's a tuff spot I'm in as currently I'm in the process of backing up everything so I can install a whole new upgrade from a 4790k to 6700k. So originally I tested out both cards and then pulled them and used my old 980 while.backing it up. Been back and forth between 4 different sets of 1080s trying to make a decision on what I want to go with. Originally wanted to water cool fe cards with upgrading my custom loop with full face blocks.. now with these hybrids I can save some cash and have quiet fast runing cards so I'd like it stick with them!

It's like either the fe cards.. your power and voltage are weak and constantly at the limit and it makes your clocks dance all over the place! That's what I love most with these cards. Steady clocks!!

Found out last night I can get away with just one corsair sp120 PE fan on push and get the same tempts as before with push pull! With that I can save another $30 on fans returning a dual pack.

Ordered on the 23rd.. have some testing time left.

Well it's an easy thing to switch and test. I know EVGA has said the only fix is to RMA, so we presume it's a hardware issue. I'm just curious if switching to the slave BIOS changes anything for others here.

Try overclocking with your memory at default. Set the voltage to 100% so precision will allow the card to use all the voltage it can. Then set the power and tempt to max. Test the overclocks with 3dmark firestrike. That way you don't mess up your game when it locks up. Usually you'll get a driver error message pop up if it freezes and it will recover without worry.

I usually max the fans but at least set them manually as high as you can bear.

Does voltage really help that much?  I haven't tried to increase voltage on this one, but my old one - 100% voltage just added heat and not much more stability.

Were you guys just getting the 100% fan issue/black screen?  My card was also crashing games randomly more often (sometimes blue screen) even at stock speeds.  Display Driver crashes and game crashes.     I get my new card today so I hope it is all related.   I had a GTX 780 for 3 years in the same setup that never crashed until I put this 1080 FTW card in...

Yes *mostly* the back screen and very loud fans - sometimes with the game still playing in the background but even then requires a hard power-down. I was also getting occasional other issues, such as freezing or stuttering but mostly when using the XOC software with the 'factory' overclock.

What is most interesting to me is almost all of the reports of this issue I have seen so far have reported the factory overclock at '2025Mhz' (mine too) - I don't think that can be a coincidence because my understanding is these parts would more than likely have differing factory over-clocks and it almost seems like these all had the same 'incorrect' overclock. My uneducated guess is EVGA have a newer version of the FTW/ACX card coming out and this batch had the incorrect BIOS, or at least the incorrect factory overclock data in their BIOS.

For me I could get the crash to happen 100% of the time by doing this in Elite Dangerous:

1. With fresh driver install after a DDU, making sure debug mode is not enabled in Nvidia control panel.
2. Install XOC, enter serial number, and leave at default factory overclock.
3. Boot elite dangerous into the game (solo or online doesn't matter).
4. Open the SYSTEM MAP.
5. Zoom in to a sun or planet.
6. Get treated to a black screen with fans going insane.

I could sometimes also get the same crash by initiating a hyperspace jump while looking sideways out of the cockpit at a close up sun.

After enabling DEBUG mode in the Nvidia drivers the problem went away 75% of the time, but would still crash occasionally. Using MSI afterburner to force the fans to 100% seemed to bring it up to 95% stable, but doing the same with XOC made no difference. In fact it seems to me that just having XOC installed/running results in much more frequent crashing, but that could just be a coincidence.

EVGA have already started the RMA process for me with an complimentary advance RMA and all shipping charges covered, so I am really really happy I chose EVGA for the warranty =)

So I'm still trying to figure out if the crashing I've been experiencing is the same as what is being reported in this thread. I've had two different kinds of crashing happen frequently for me but it happens differently in two different games, and it seems to happen somewhat less frequently for me than others in this thread which is causing the confusion, so I am not sure if I want to RMA yet. When you say that sometimes the game continues to run in the background but your screen goes black, can you still see your mouse pointer? I may be splitting hairs here but that has happened a lot for me in doom. I can tell windows is still running but I can't see anything except my pointer, so I am unable to navigate task manager and have to hit reset.

The other kind of crash that I've had happen several times in about 10 hours of Deus Ex: Mankind divided is the type of crash where you get a loud ugly gibberish sound just as the display crashes to black. It sounds like the last fraction of a second of audio gets repeated very loudly for a while before you either power down the system, or sometimes the system does a system dump before restarting. Is this also a symptom of the crashing that you guys are experiencing? So far I haven't read a mention of the audio loop sound upon crashing so I'm still trying to understand.

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2016/09/07 08:49:22 (permalink)
Hi all,

I found this thread googling my problem, and I'm having the *exact* same symptoms as everyone else here, including emphasis on WoW -- system hanging up, monitors black, ominous sounds from the machine, Precision showing it top out at a sensible 60 degrees C, aggressive fan curve, can cook an omelet on the card, have to reboot to restore functioning.  This continued through Windows reinstall and trying the usual trick of opening the case and setting up a fan (not a desk fan mind you; a floor fan literally the same size as the case. :D)  So yeah, my card is definitely sick.

I called EVGA support, and to their credit, it was painless.  I explained I had gone through all the usual troubleshooting steps and that symptoms pointed to a common problem, and referred to this thread. After a couple of brief questions, he agreed and opened the RMA. I don't think I've ever had a support experience go that smooth.

I'll update when I get my new card in a few days.

I received my RMA Card shipped after 30/8 and tried on unigive heaven and ran the benchmark. No OC just stock clocking ran a score of 1661 with an i5 4460 with everythin on ultra/extreme + AA x8 had no crash so far.

The clock im getting is 1721 idle and 1970-1999 during the benchmark. the card runs more cooler than the previous one and I will be testing probably this evening on the witcher 3 where I had problems playing.

Well let's hope for the best

ps: resolution is 1440p

yea for now I;m not too concerned about it. I checked system events and it was something related to lack of memory the first time it happened, but will test other games just to make sure.  great card, runs quiet, and tbh, it really is better on the green side.

Just wondering if the non hybrid 1080 ftw has dual bios? Slave bios has the +130% power over the regular +120?

Gahhh just installed couple of days ago and had the same thing happen - 1080 FTW Hybrid, haven't even tried to clock it yet, got black screen, fans spun up to 100%, had to reset/restart PC to get back up again. I was only playing GW2 which is not GPU intensive, card was running well under 50C, was only playing for like 40 minutes. I guess RMA is in order... dammit. Going to end up with a refurb card instead. Purchased from EVGA direct.. is there a 30 day return period like Newegg? My 980Ti never gave me a problem, not even once.

Were all in the boat! I believe I've heard people say you get a new card in return though I'd wait to hear from others first.

Try out the slave bios.. theres a switch on the card to swap between the 2 bios. See if that helps.

Just to make sure, our cards that are getting RMA'ed to us will NOT be refurbs correct? I paid 700$+ for my FTW version at Microcenter DAYS ago and there is no way in hell I will accept a refurb.

Again, these will be BRAND NEW cards getting sent to us right?

Thanks.

Jacob, one question... I installed the card and Precision X OC 2 days ago and had to provide the card serial number to install Precision, but that card is going to be RMA'ed.. should I re-register Precision with the new serial number when I get it (which I guess means uninstall Precision, remove registry entries possibly, then reinstall)?

I RMA'ed mine and got a new one from EVGA. All my problems went away, new one works 100%

Good to know, thanks. Can you imagine any other supplier providing service like this? Not a chance. This is why I always buy EVGA.

Got my RMA unit installed, about to test it.

I did notice that the back end of the card,  right above the backplate.. It is missing something, the LED bleeds.  I compared it to my other 1080 that I am sending back and apparently there is suppose to be black tape there.

I noticed my new cards clock speeds are between 1925-1970 where my previous once was 1985-2015. Maybe that means the factory overclock went down some. Not a big deal to me since I can also try manually overclocking to get it back to 2000ish

opened a ticket 50 hours ago, still waiting for a response. even if i get an answer, it's a shame that i'll be paying loads of money for customs and shipping again because of a defective product.

Same for mine. So far no black screens but GTA5 has crashed 5 times. Play time at about 20 minutes each. Card never goes above 73C.
