My MB is a GB B550 Aorus Pro V2 with 8 GB sticks in slots A2 & B2 (Ballistix 3200).  I am considering adding 16 GB sticks (same MFR & timing) to A1 & B1.   Are there potential issues with running this config?  I could always just take out the 8 GB sticks & put them in the drawer as spares since I don't really need 48 GB total.

If you go for 32GB then you can always put away your 8GB sticks as emergency replacements.

Choose to run 8 GB sticks or 16GB sticks

OK, That's good advice.  I will only use the 16 GB sticks.  Thanks to all.

A follow up question.  My CPU is R5 5600X & RAM timings are 16-18-18-36.  Is it worth considering the low latency options like the G Skill 14-14-14-34 or is that asking for more trouble?

Benchmark runs - for best score possible = yes, it can help & you want to run 2 RAM modules for best speed

Gaming = I doubt it would impact FPS - at all or significantly - 1 or 2 FPS, only if RAM was the slowest part of your PC - Is My Guess

Thanks guys.  I am not going to chase a few FPS so I will just stick with the cas 16.  It has worked flawlessly for me.

How are you liking the 5800X3D as compared to the 5600X?  I toyed with the idea of getting one but I game at 1080p, 60 FPS & my system runs well with anything you throw at it. . .so far.

Re: RAM Upgrade Question 2023/03/08 10:21:44 (permalink)
5800x3d  is running well it is 105 watt cpu 5600x is 95 watt and the 5800x3d is known to run hotter and it does. i was running a nzxt x73 360 aio in a nzxt 710i case and never had cooling issue. i changed cases to a corsair 5000d airflow case when i got 5800x3d and tempd were great, then i updated bios and temps soared but were stable and my nzxt cam software was not reconizing my aio so i sent it back to nzxt for rma and bought a noctua nh 12s dual fan chromemax air coolerwhich is working fine. nzxt stepped up and sent me a brand new x73 rgb and got ti yesterday. i have an asus b550 f mobo and i found some chnages i could make in the bios and it keeps the 5800x3d nice and cool so im not sure when or if ill put the aio back on it. if you only running 60fps id stay with that 5600x its a solid performer and i kept mine in case i have any issues i think its a great cpu and i think small upgrades you dont really notice. and im running a evga rtx 3090 ftw3 ultra so my fps is rocking. if you decide to go 5800x3d like i did just have decent cooling for it.whats you pc specs.

Yes I've heard that the 5800x3d runs a bit hotter.  That would be my only concern if I got one.  My case is a Fractal D Meshify C Compact.  I have a Noctua D15S sitting on top of my 5600x & it keeps the temps well under control.  My GPU is the EVGA RTX 3060 Ti FTW Ultra.  TBH the setup is a bit of overkill for 1080p 60 FPS.  It has easily done whatever I've needed so far.

Yes it will do a lot more than 60 FPS at 1080p.  E.G. with uncapped frames the system does 250+ FPS in The Hunter COTW with high settings.  I cap the frames at 60 FPS bc most games don't look or play any better to me with higher settings.  It stays pegged at 60 FPS for any game I play & most of the time the GPU fans don't even spin up.  It runs nice & quiet at 60 FPS.
