Hi all,

From my understanding the benefit from Z790 is more PCI lanes and higher overclocks/speeds on DDR5 and some other stuff....other than that its basically the same stuff.
I just don't want to regret if il go with a Z690 and later regret my decision because "i should have gone with the Z790...."
So im holding of for my new pc rig because of the EVGA Z790 Classified. But then ask my self should i?
Either way the cpu of choice will be a 13th gen k7-13700K or i9-13900K with either a RTX 4090 or AMD RX7900XTX (depending on reviews).
The board(s) all can be flashed without a cpu might be of benefit IF i opt for the EVGA Z690 Kingpin.

Been saving for 6 years so i BETTER make a good choice!

Ive read somewhere that even if the Kingpin has 2 RAM slots its actually better for stability how come?

Also can people chime in and tell me about your experience with either the EVGA Z690 Kingpin or Z690 Classified boards when it comes down to stability and reliability in normal tasks not talking about extreme OC's but just gaming and other general pc tasks.

So yeah go with Z790 Kingpin or Z790 Classified (found some offers with decent price for Z690 kingpin)??

Thanks in advance for the feedback and help.

If you’re going to Raptor Lake, you have to go Z790. Support on Z690 is shoddy at best. The last solid BIOS on the 690 Kingpin was 1.15 (last stable ADL release). All RPL BIOSs have been plagued with bugs and straight up board breaking issues. I suppose that was always going to be the obvious answer. Looks like 690 was only meant for use with ADL.

z690 dark kp here with 13900k. Works nice and stable. The z690 dark kp will be cheaper than z790, so that is something to think about. Two ram slots puts less stress on cpu imc which makes things much more stable.

Thank you guy's for all the feedback much appreciated!

This may seem odd but i compare the Kingpin MB with a beefy Ferrari (with a nice V10) comparing it to a general MB with lesser caps, chokes, layers etc like a Suzuki 1.0 ltr engine both cars drive at 150km/h which of the 2 cars can easily maintain that speed without ANY effort?

So im looking at it from a stability, reliability standpoint i will not focus to much on extreme overclocking.
So i wonder how this MB fares with day to day tasks and gaming overall? I did read a anecdote that the Kingpin isnt made for general usage and might cause issues...true?

I do like the idea of only 2 ram slots which adds to that stability i seek!

All in all its either the Z690 Kingpin or Z790 Classified or if i must an Asus Strix Z790 E gaming (obvious i PREFER an EVGA boards since my last 2 boards where EVGA.

Please let them come ie your feedback about general stability and reliability and gaming (not talking about stability with OC or Extreme OC's)
And yes i may save money if i go with the Z690 Kingpin but the poster who said that 13th gen cpu's may cause issues on a Z690 personally i think he might have a point. Thats why i seek more feedback.

I had 7000-7200 stable on 2.03 with M-die, and with A-die I was able to get 7400 going and it passed HCI at 800% twice. Unfortunately on 2.03, A-die has potential re-train issues. Someone with a Z690 Apex said the same thing happens to him above 7400.

BIOS 2.04 has me pissed off and unable to stabilise anything with my A-die. I’m considering just going back to 2.03. I dunno like, I guess if you’re willing to gamble BIOS issues and settle for 7400-7600 depending on your IMC, then sure. I legit haven’t seen a single screenshot from the 690 Dark of HCI 600-1000% with a 7800+ tune. Like, I dunno. I’d just get the Z790 to not deal with weirdness. The 690 Dark is bust for Raptor Lake. They’re not really optimising it anymore though, and why would they?

12900KS with Z690 Dark. 1.15 BIOS (will be adding a Gigabyte 4090 gaming OC this week).
In my opinion, if you are going with a 13th gen Intel CPU then I would buy the Z790 Dark. I won't be upgrading my CPU for a long time.
My setup works nice and stable for me - never any issues during Microsoft Word documents (so business activities), and never any issues during gaming (no stutters).

It is easier on the memory controller and the motherboard topology to use less dimms, but that typically becomes more of a concern with very high speeds.
A single stick will generally OC better than 2 and 2 better than 4. At least that is my experience with DDR5 memory OC'ing. But, the CPU also has a hand in how the OC'ing goes with memory.

I hope this helps. I didn't really answer your questions the first time around. I'm sorry about that.

I use the board for gaming. I’ve had zero issues with it when gaming. Day to day tasks have had no issues as well.

Another reason to get the Z690 Dark Kingpin is it's the last EVGA motherboard to support NVIDIA SLI. Z790 Dark Kingpin doesn't support NVIDIA SLI.

Using Z690 Classified with 13700K on BIOS 2.06.
I don’t see any issues. I am using Classified’s Auto OC giving me 5.6GHz all P cores as starting. It’s been only 2 weeks I have got this, but so far no issues with the board. Had a memory training error the first time, where I had to remove 1 dimm, turn XMP on and put the dimm back to get full 32GB ram. I have 32GB 6000MTs C36 Corsair Vengeance kit working without issues so far after this.

I'm using the Z690 Kingpin with a 13900KS on BIOS 2.08.  Currently running at 5.7 all P cores and 4.5 all E cores @ 1.28 vcore with 7200 DDR5.  No stability issues at all.  Only thing I would warn you about is the potential power draw.  Make sure you have a top end cooling solution.

I'm curious, what temperature you hit on a full load with that OC? and how much watts total?

Basically i'm on a 12900K and put an X on OC over 5K... way too much hot... (i dislike having my CPU hit over 80 degrees celsius no matter what)  So i tune this beast to be under the 70's mark at 5ghz stable all core.

While I understand your concern, you're kind of limiting yourself.  On my system for example, I'm running my 12900k @ 5.3/1.335v and will see 82C in Cinebench.  Lower for OCCT Large/Extreme and maybe 90 in OCCT Small/Extreme.  However, in everyday use, gaming, video encoding, my CPU barely reaches 60C (this is with a custom loop with a plethora of rad-space).

Agree.  You wont see high temps when not benchmarking or pushing the cpu.  Im at 45-50c at 5.7 on my z790/13900k. Doing daily.

It's hard to think you would be disappointed in any way between the two as both are incredibly nice motherboards. I might go with the Z790 if you are going to try to hold off on upgrading as long as possible but the Z690 would be cheaper which is also nice for some improvements in other areas of the system if the budget is tight.

    thread revival, yay

do not forget u get other different things as

    - i226 instead i225, despite i225 being kinda ok on revision (3) and give no issues its still an awful nic. i226 started not differently some people with issues but at least i need to try to see if its a better nic.. its sad cause dark had i210 which is SUPERIOR to all those, maybe its not up to them to make decision
    - YOU GET ANOTHER BRAND NIC as secondary, not an repetitive nic

    - more pcb layers, i had a discussion with someone, is it really better? or more layers will make signal weaker/worse??? i guess depends on how they use it and if they get their best.
but the discussion was mostly board with less layers could have more signal cause easier, and boards with more layers i.e 790 dark would give more protection to interference/integrity signal
