The drive is a Samsung 870 EVO 2 TB & it has worked fine until several days ago.  While updating a game on Steam, it got stuck in a loop & would not finish the task.  The Win 10 log shows ID 7 hard disk has a bad block (thousands of times).  Running ChkDsk does not fix it.  Yesterday I DL & installed Samsung Magician without any issues.  The SMART test aborts & indicates a failing LBA.  The full diagnostics scan finds errors but recovery of same fails.  Is there something else I can do to repair it?

A new HDD is on order & supposed to arrive Wed.  My plan was to clone the SSD files to it.  Then, wipe the SSD & reformat it.  If that doesn't work I can try & RMA since it is still under warranty.

RMA it. It is more than likely dying.

Thanks for the help.  Yes, I will RMA bc its only 15 months old.  I've read that they most likely will send you a refurbished one.  So, I'm not excited about getting that one either.

Refurbished doesn’t mean anything bad usually. I understand not wanting a refurbished product, but at least it has been extensively tested for recertification. You’ll be less likely to have any issues

The NIB WD Black HDD arrived today.  I did a full backup of the EVO 870 to an external HDD with Acronis (skipping the bad sectors).  Then, I recovered the backup to the new HDD.  It is working fine except that Win 10 IDs it as an SSD.  So, you cannot run the optimizer/defrag.  How do you get Win 10 to recognize the correct media type?  The system is running AHCI.

Running "winsat formal" from powershell solves the issue.  Win 10 now correctly IDs the media type as HDD.  If the new HDD runs fine through the weekend, I'll reconnect the EVO 870 & do a secure erase to prep it for RMA.

Eagle, did you see this thread: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/samsung-870-evo-beware-certain-batches-prone-to-failure.291504/

Thanks, I have seen similar info on these drives.  Mine was MFR in May 2021.  I am currently waiting on them to approve RMA, but I am not confident in using it going forward.

Yeah, i dont blame ya. There drives are all good till the 870's and then they dropped the ball. I presume they will say because of shortages etc.. but im glad you got the RMA at least.

My tolerance for HW failures is low.  My 870 EVO is most likely a lemon.  If I decide to go back to a SATA SSD, it won't be this model. For now, I'm in my 'safe place' with the WD Black HDD.

Re: SSD EVO 870 Issues 2023/01/01 04:26:15 (permalink)
They sent me a NIB SSD (same model) as a replacement & I installed it yesterday.  I may put the OS on it at some point.  But not in a rush bc the system is running really well & I don't want to break into jail right now.

The new 870 EVO has been running for 2 weeks now with the OS.  Still perfect & has not thrown any errors.  Hopefully, it will last for the life of my machine & this chapter is over.
