Alright all... if anyone even sees this, lol. Trying to figure out what to do with an older gaming system...

I recently grabbed the latest Z690 Classified when it was on crazy sale during the anniversary and somehow talked myself into getting a 3090Ti during the back-to-school sale. As I slowly put together this new build, I am going to be above each of the kids and myself having a gaming system now.  The oldest system is an EVGA X58 Classified with i7-980X, 24GB DDR3 1600, and running with a 3070 FTW3 ULTRA. I upgraded the old Cooler Master 1100W PSU from 2009 with a new EVGA 1000G6 when updating the EVGA GTX 570HD to a 3070 FTW3 ULTRA in early 2021. At some point after realizing I hadn't used a DVD or Blu-Ray in years, I swapped it from the original full tower Antec case I built it in and placed it in a Cooler Master MasterBox Pro P5 even though it doesn't have USB 3.0... I didn't think about it until I was plugging cables in.

Any thoughts on if I should hold on to it for nostalgia and use it as a random extra computer in the house, donate to a school or something, part it out, ...? Just curious to see if you all have any ideas... other than to send it to you. ;)

A couple of the IT guys at work are telling me its bottlenecked around the CPU, but the things screams along at 3.33Ghz without issue and from what I can tell, the games are doing just fine. My main system is running an ASUS Z590-E with i7-11700K, 64GB DDR4 3600, and 3090KP on 2x 32" 1440p 240Hz G7 monitors compared to the X58 showing on a single 27" 1440p 144Hz monitor.  Comparatively, they seem fine.

I would say you should keep it (X58) as a spare, or a home storage NAS, or home media PC.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Keep it. The X58 was a insightful platform. I've still got two of 'em, running windows 10pro, one of which still virtualizes a Debian Domain Server without any issues at all. I think I've gone through a couple of power supplies in the last decade but aside from that the damn things seem bullet proof. Moreover, I agree with you, Subhunter, comparatively they are fine when stacked up against a modern machine. In fact, my first gen i7's, as stock cpu's, (even the little 920) still clock (a little) faster than, say, a modern W2223 or 5 when bench tested, a fact which I find to be just utterly amusing considering the decade between those technologies. (But they keep selling us new ones...ain't capitalism grand?)
Keep it, you will find uses for that ol' box for years to come.

Def is one of the few older systems worth keeping. X58 was a great platform in general but evga's classified board was really good for overclocking. Also, if you want to pull more out of it, you can do the Xeon chip mod and get a way better more capable chip in it, unless your mobo is the 1.1 revision then you already have it. Look on ebay for the cpu's first though, or elsewhere, and make sure you can get one before you mess with it though, if you want/have to. Throwing a decent ssd in it will make a huge difference also, but between the two youll get a nice bump.

    MOBO: EVGA x299 Dark, CPU: I9 10900X, RAM: Patriot Viper RGB 3600 32gb, SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB, M2: Samsung 970 EVO+ 1TB, PSU: CoolerMaster M2 1500, CPU HSF: EVGA 240 CLC HSF~ P/P EK Furious Vardar, G-CARD:EVGA RTX3090 FTW3 Ultra Gaming w/Hybrid kit and Noctua IPPC 3000 P/P, CASE: LIAN-LI PC-V2010B w/ Window mod, OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit, MON: Alienware AW3821DW

He has an i7-980x, it is a hex-core CPU, no reason to go with a Xeon CPU.
The Xeon mods were popular because they were hex-cores and way cheaper than the 980x used on Ebay.
Op is running it at 3.33, crank that puppy up to 4 to 4.4gkz and run with it.
4ghz is an easy overclock and should not need a voltage bump, most of mine didn't.
