I've been picking up a few random parts here and there over the last year. Initially got a deal on the EK AIO 280 D-RGB cooler, an ASUS ROG Strix X570-I mobo and a SSUPD Meshlicious black tempered glass side-panel case. Will probably just throw in my Samsung 970 EVO+, 16GB EVGA DDR4, EVGA 750W PSU and EVGA GTX1080 from my X99 part out what is left of it.

So, should it go with a 5800X3D, 5900X or a 5950X for the CPU? I play both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Star Citizen and have seen the 5800X3D L3 cache doing miraculous improvements with the recent versions of those games. I suppose this is cores vs L3 cache to ponder?

Thoughts?

I would say you should choose the 5800X3D.

Problem is one could argue 5800X3D and 5950X are both best for different reasons, hence the indecision.

The 16 cores allows better multi-tasking and is better for apps (decompression, video decoding, etc) so the 5950 is what you want in that situation. Gaming and flight simulator is better with the 5800X3D.

I'm probably overthinking it. I should just go to Micro Center and just get what is in stock. 5950X or 5800X3D either I'll be in good shape.

You're a winner with either choice.

The tie breaker ended up being availability. There was one 5950X in the city I was traveling to tomorrow. It's 2 hours away, but I was going to be there anyways tomorrow.

The stupid thing though is I kept on timing out the cart on the purchase then thought someone got the only one in stock while I was checking on something. It ended up being me in another tab having it in the store cart. I almost sabotaged my own purchase by hopping around the web researching something.

I'm glad it worked out. Let us know what you think of the processor once you get it installed and running. I highly recommend a 280mm AIO or better. I have the same CPU. I am using a Corsair H150i Elite LCD AIO since last week.

A couple of part swaps on the build. The EVGA PSU wouldn't fit with the 280 AIO in so I went with a Corsair CX750F RGB. Since I was no longer cannibalizing out of my X99 for PSU, I got a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB NVME and Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB 3600 DDR4. That case truly is a tight fit. There is no room to spare in it.

    And the build begins....

    Dropping in the 280 AIO.

    CPU and NVME SSD installed.

This case has zero extra space. No SFX PSUs locally, so I had to get the smallest footprint 750W PSU I could find.

It's a bit clumsy with the cables being shoved in behind the card. It pushes the card right up onto the mesh case side panel. The case design put a lot more thought into the mobo side of the case than the GPU side I think. It works, but the new Mesh V2 they're supposedly working on needs to better address cable storage. The computer is up and 100% functional though. Was using it the last 24 hours. Will snap a few photos of it in a bit.

I need to do a bit more on cable management in the GPU side and also look up how the RGB wiring works and get that stuff plugged into the RGB headers on the board. Is it series or parallel? Can it be just plugged in series into the mobo RGB header, or do I need a controller in-between the header and the individual leads? It's not immediately intuitive on how RGB wiring works. Anyone know of a good how-to video for the RGB header on an ASUS ROG Strix mobo?
