I work as a parts salesman and sold an EVGA 970 SSC to one of my customers the other day, he brought it back the next day saying that it was great, ran all of his games smoothly until it went SNAP CRACKLE POP, then smoke and flames everywhere! Almost burnt down his house! Thankfully his first instinct was to unplug the PC and that put the fire out (whew). We swapped his card out with a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970... and his replacement has been working great so far. AFAIK, the card was installed properly and even had a nice RM850 power supply running it. The rest of the system was not damaged, fortunately.  Has YOUR graphics card caught fire before? And if so, was it an EVGA card?

I bought 2 of those from Bestbuy, and they worked AWESOME. So, must just been a bad gpu. Maybe too much voltage from the one he purchased, i don't know. It happens. Thank goodness his whole pc didnt catch fire, or his house. oops. 2 of the ones i did purchase were EVGA. no issues.

It worried me because I have an EVGA 970 FTW+, same type of card as the SSC I think......
the FTW+ is a better card than the SSC. higher clock rate. But be assured that EVGA has the best RMA service available in the united states.

Never had one that bad. But I did have a 9800 GX2 with a water block on it that decided to go out in spectacular fashion with pretty colors. Also left some marks on the copper block from the heat.

Never had one that bad. But I did have a 9800 GX2 with a water block on it that decided to go out in spectacular fashion with pretty colors. Also left some marks on the copper block from the heat.
This is one of the reasons i have been very very scepticle to go water cooling... if the water pump goes out, do you get any kind of warning other than your GPU catching on fire (insert exageration here)?

Interesting. Now that it's destroyed to that point, you won't be able to see if he modified the BIOS to run beyond it's limits. I wonder what gave out.

System works fine afterwards but it almost burnt his house down? Must not have been to bad. Just looks like some compinents fries out, not real
Fire or we would see some melted pcb and more than likely damage to the PC...

If you are smart then you keep an on the temps or set a thermal shutdown. I put in hybrid coolers and setup my machine to shut down if they go over 71c.

I saw an ASUS graphics card catch fire once long ago but the reason for that was excessive dust buildup and the dust literally caught fire.

Please email me the details from the purchase and we will have the product exchanged for your customer. We can also confirm that this is not a common issue with EVGA products and though we do not want to pass blame, it may be a good step to inform your customer to take a second look at the power supply, any liquid cooling, abnormal conditions or loose bare frayed wiring in the case as well. I work on electronics for a living. I work on a large volume of greatly varying type. Things go 'pop' all the time. Sometimes there are just faulty components. Happens. Usually, though, if it isn't simply old and tired, it is because a user did something stupid or it was a power surge of some sort.
I wasn't there for this one, so I don't know which is the most logical explanation.

Out of the many EVGA cards i've owned sense BFG tech went belly up.
Never had a problem where the card caught fire.
Now an issue were the card stopped working... Yep but nothing fire related.
EVGA cards owned
3 250 GTS 512MB (one was a return from an RMA)
465 GTX (Beastly card)
560 GTX Ti (Had the Ti TDR Death issue Nvidia wanted it)
660 GTX Ti (got it directly from nVidia for a GPU Swap)
2 970 GTX FTW's

May of been a short circuit in the cards board. Would of heated up as the electricity passed through the short eventually ending up with enough heat to catch the plastic cover of the SLI connecter on fire and made smoke as the board burnt black. The fire is kind of strange and I could see some bad smoke from the silicone and I suppose the plastic SLI cover is fairly flammable and may of lit up.
Thats my guess at least, or at least metal isn't flammable but plastic is and silicone can smoke.

Coil whine, a bad DVI port and an artifacting GPU (courtesy of Unwinder's Precision), but never anything this crazy. I have owned A LOT of EVGA cards over the years.

I had an old 56K modem back in the day catch fire and I lost everything but the hard drive.

The customer already got his replacement and it's working great now. I don't know what my store is going to do with the card though, most likely trash it. Thanks EVGA for the backup though! I haven't had any of my EVGA cards catch fire yet. I wanna assume the customer did something they shouldn't have done as well...... but can't put the blame on anybody without proof xD

If they are using an oversized heatsink (like Noctua D14) on the CPU, it may get close to the backside of the GPU and short out. The through hole component sticks out far from the board and the board listing over at the top would put it even closer to the heatsink. So if you really look at this, you can see a lead is missing. A clue that the short probably started there and thus user induced.

i dont know my back plate on my ftw+ gets super hot. I mean hot like barely touch it. Since i've been swapping cards lately. I have a corsair 780t with 5 intakes and 2 exhausts over a air conditioned vent. i need to put my inferred gun on it. i wonder what under the heat sink looks like?

Maybe you could take off the heat sync and reseat it onto the chip?

this actually happened to me yesterday and it is currently in RMA , there is a picture of the aftermath. and this is an evga sc, the card was at 50c when my computer shut down, when it came back on..... that happened.

Jeez! looking at this is a little disconcerting! I mean any card can go bad on any given sunday with a bad GPU board but it never makes it easy to see it! You almost need a support group for the RMA process :)

Usually when a pump goes out you can hear it, unless you're running 4500rpm fans. If you don't but monitor temps you'll see your temps skyhigh. If you don't, most GPUs and CPUs will downclock automatically and/or shutdown. That is if you aren't stupid enough to have them disabled. For the ones talking about bios modding 1. If the card burned from bios modding EVGA will know, because reasons :P BUT 2. how much voltage could the card get from a bios to burn the card? If you've gotten your nose into the bios of a recent nvidia card you'll know that not much to even warrant a suspicion. Something poped there and as said it sometimes happens in electronics. If it were more common, we could argue on the parts used for the cards, kinda like in the case of the 980 FTW.

20 years of building PCs I've never heard of or seen first hand a GPU spontaneously catch fire.
I don't trust your customer. Maybe I'm wrong...but I'd bet money I'm not.
