So I’m about ready to install the EK water block on my barely 2 week old 3080Ti and came across a thought after disassembling the card:

Has anyone seen any significant difference in keeping the thermal pads the gpu came with vs the thermal pads that EK includes with the waterblock?

Over the months I’ve seen people posting about replacing thermal pads either for better thermals on air or for waterblocks - I’m getting mixed messages about the pads.

The thermal putty (no, not paste) on the VRMs are a given - kinda difficult to recover the the putty from the air cooler and spread it onto their respective components on the card itself.

But the thermal pads on the memory and chokes are 100% intact as one piece and not ripped up, and only slightly stretched.

Thoughts?

when i put a block on my 3080 ftw3 ultra i used the gelid pads and the thermalright odessey and they were a multitude better than stock. the pads that ek uses are 3w/mk vs thermalrights 12w/mk. it does actually make a measurable difference. you only really need the higher end pads on the memory though, the rest of it will be fine. but you also have to make sure that you get the correct size thermal pads or it could mess up the contacts on the gpu die or other components. the best thing to do is put it together completely and then disassemble the gpu to check the contacts. that step can possibly save you a ton of money.

I've always used EK's thermal pads included with the block and never an issue with temp. Also remember EK has designed their block for a specific thermal pad thickness.

According to EK's installational manual, all their pads are 1mm but you're saying you need different widths?

Best to use the OEM pads supplied w the Block......honestly your not going to get a significant improvement by messing around with other pads.....if you want better thermals focus on the efficiency of your loop, as type of radiators and fans.

Its not just about thickness of the pads but also density.
Anyone that says they got more than 5c improvement going to an after market pad very likely had a crappy mount with the oem pads to begin with.
After using the EK Blocks going back to 780Ti's, they're fine.
