I've had two different 3090 FTW3 Ultra's, and they've each failed on me under similar circumstances within 24 hours after getting them. For the first card, my screen went black when gaming, followed by the card's fans getting very loud (I'm assuming thy were at 100%). My PC shutting off after a few minutes and I thought I smelled a slight burning smell. During any subsequent attempt to power on the PC, the RGB lights on the card wouldn't power on, a small red LED was on above the leftmost power connector, and no signal was sent to the monitor in spite of the OS booting up (verified by the program Multiplicity sending mouse inputs to my laptop through my LAN). ENGA gave me an advance RMA for this card, and to be safe, I installed a new power supply before I got the second card. My second card failed in almost the same way when gaming. This time, the screen also went black, followed followed by the card's fans getting very loud. The PC didn't shut off until I forced a power off after ~10 minutes. I did not notice any burning smell this time, and the exhaust from the card kept getting cooler over time until it felt room temperature, making me think the card wasn't handling any workload anymore. Like with the first card, the card didn't send a signal to the monitor in subsequent attempts to power on the PC, though the PC booted into Windows (like with the first card). Unlike with the first card, the RGB lights on the card lit up, and none of the small LEDs above the three power connectors were lit up. I also hear a fan whining noise. My PC works fine when installing one of my previous graphics cards. I had used DDU before installing this card. For the second card, I tried using another PCIE slot in the the PC, tried after disabling gsync, and briefly tried in a friend's borrowed PC, all with the same results. The integrated graphics on the friend's machine was able to connect to a monitor, and the device manager was unable to identify the 3090, even after scanning for hardware changes. Both times, the failure occurred when playing the same game (GTA V with mods "ReShade 2.0.3 with SweetFX 2.0" and "ScriptHookV_1.0.2060.1" installed) after playing other, more intensive games without incident (Control, Minecraft RTX beta, Watch Dogs 3, RTX Quake II, etc.). I had also ran EVGA Precision X1 prior to each failure, which automatically updated the firmware for each card. Any advice or similar experiences? I don't think this is a power supply issue because (1) the first power supply worked fine with two Titan X's (Pascal gen) in SLI, which have a combined power draw above the 3090, and (2) because I replaced the power supply with a new power supply. Each time, I was using 3 separate power cables for the three power connectors on the 3090's. One of the people from EVGA tech support suggested it may be due to the motherboard, perhaps because this card draws more power from the PCIE slot. I'll probably install a new motherboard when I'm able to buy a Ryzen 5950x or 5900x, but who knows how long that will be. They have agreed to do another RMA, but I'm nervous this third card might fail, and I'm not sure if I want to wait until I get one of the new Ryzen cards before I try a new 3090. I went through the Event Viewer to see if I could find anything seemingly relevant and found these around the time of the second card's failure: 1:45:57pm Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. 1:46:11pm Winlogon in session 1 (console) reuqested session stop using GPU, returned status STATUS_SUCCESS, with progress stage of successful 1:46:11pm Faulting application name: dwm.exe, version: 10.0.19041.508, time stamp: 0xcd97c98b Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.19041.572, time stamp: 0x1183946c Exception code: 0xe0464645 Fault offset: 0x000000000010b65c Faulting process id: 0x28a0 Faulting application start time: 0x01d6afc6dd03cd4c Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwm.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\KERNELBASE.dll Report Id: 54a5eac1-0ffd-4877-8369-d09505f60fbb Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: 1:46:53pm Faulting application name: GTA5.exe, version: 1.0.2060.1, time stamp: 0x5f4d2237 Faulting module name: GTA5.exe, version: 1.0.2060.1, time stamp: 0x5f4d2237 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000015ccc54 Faulting process id: 0x40b0 Faulting application start time: 0x01d6afc64133ff6c Faulting application path: G:\I games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\GTA5.exe Faulting module path: G:\I games\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V\GTA5.exe Report Id: 77e6e540-ac07-417d-b603-aa07dba38047 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: My system specs: CPU: i7 8700k (OC @4.8 GHz all core turbo, hyperthreading disabled) RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q-64GVK Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming K6 LGA 1151 Power supply (first failure): Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER GRAND 80 Plus Gold 1200W (TPG-1200MPCUS) Power supply (second failure): Seasonic PRIME GX-1000 (SSR-1000GD) UPS: CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD Intelligent LCD UPS System, 1500VA/900WStorage: 1 SSD + 5 HDDs Sound card: Asus Xonar DGX (installed in a PCIE x1 slot) Display: PG27UQ (gsync enabled when failures occurred, HDR on during one failure and off on another) EDIT: I've had my 3rd 3090 FTW3 Ultra for about a week now, and it's still running. I've avoided installing Precision X1 or playing Grand Theft Auto V with this card (I have no idea if either had anything to do with the failures of the first 2 cards, but I decided to wait until after I've beaten Cyberpunk to try either).

I called them during their service hours before posting this thread. They'll approve a 2nd advance RMA, but I'm very nervous that I'll get a 3rd card that will fail. Hopefully, the cause will be diagnosed, and I'll eventually have a stable card. FWI, I edited the OP to include my UPS. I'm not sure if it's 900W limit, with other connected devices drawing a little power, could be a problem.

UPS won’t kill your card or other components, if its overloaded or defective it will beep and shot down itself and your system. I have 1500 Cyberpower and it’s about 8 years old. When I was running system with 4 titans, OC 6950X, ton of HDDs (25-30) it would pull close to 1700Wats and would beep and shot down my system, I eventually got second Cyberpower and split the components among them, to damage your components, they have to be problematic to begin with and 3080/3090s are cards with issues. My nephews 2 of the 3090FTW died one after another and mine recently died only after 15min of use, so you not alone. Btw. on the other hand, bad peripheral cables, especially 24pin can damage not only your cards, but other components.

Does you UPS give a readout on how much wattage is being pulled? Maybe put in your old card and see what the reading says. If it doesn't, then buy a Kill-A-Watt device so you can see how much watts are really begin drawn from you system config. That 5 HDDs plus everything else is probably pulling some juice over what your UPS could handle or just barely handle. Just a thought.

I don't doubt, there are issues with 3080s/3090s, but whoever is trash talking on that video, whatever you even call it by just playing game, not even showing his “supposedly " card that was smoking, let alone PC where the card was installed is pure BS. He has phone, everyone does these days, even quick video when "supposedly" that was happening to back his BS would be sufficient. I truly don’t understand anyone who either saying "review" of such thing but really, just playing game throughout the whole thing and reviewing/describing whatever, dumbest reviews and trash talk ever.

What video did you watch? The video is called "Why I returned My Nvidia RTX 3090... RIP BFGPU" At no point does he pass the video off as a review or is he trash talking the card. He just talks about his experience of first installing the card and seeing smoke. Then he makes fun of himself for continuing to try to use it after an obvious problem. He also describes how glorious the card was why it worked and how great EVGA tech support treated him. So I really dont know what you are talking about. Maybe you only bothered to watch the first 10 seconds or something I don't know. I actually thought the video was pretty funny.

What I was referring to a people like him who either play game through the whole time of describing what happen to them or reviewers that neither showing the component they reviewing and in this guys case problem his describing,. He’s pretty much trash talking through the whole game and what is that supposed to be. Let me make it easier for you to grasp what I'm saying. I will play some random game and talk about my 6000 Quadro going into flames "O my goodness" there were flames up to my ceiling, how stupid that sounds, he would get more attention as it seem that's all he wants, if he would even take a picture of what supposedly happen, It’s all BS, he’s poor attention seeker that's all, he has to much free time on his hands.

Yes, I used only the cables that came with each PSU. I'm pretty sure the cables that came with the 1st PSU are proprietary, and don't work with other brands of PSUs.

Yup. I saw that just as I was posting, and his problems sound very similar (except he was able to use his card for a while after the initial problems). I was going to include a link, but I think I was blocked because it was my first post here.

clearly something is off with your system , the definition of insanity is to do the same thing and expect different results , sorry you have to go through this you might want to use a PSU with a power monitor just to see if there are any unusual s or power issues , if you owned your system for a long time and you know it works maybe just get a brand new power supply just to test it out with the new card , personally i have the Evga 1200 G2 that I'm ruining with my FTW 3 3080 , and i have never had issue , also are using extension cables those seems to have issues , good luck

rain2_usaDoes you UPS give a readout on how much wattage is being pulled? Maybe put in your old card and see what the reading says. I didn't think of that! I reinstalled the 3090, and it measured a spike up to 306W when turning on, and it settled around 135W. I reinstalled one of my Titan X (Pascal) cards, and it initially spikes up to 216 within 10 seconds of startup, and hits up to 288 about a minute later. I get around 153W during general computer use (e.g., browsing this forum while watching a Youtube video). I tried stressing both the CPU and GPU with Flight Simulator 2020 + running background tasks, and the highest draw I saw was 450W with the GPU at ~99% and CPU > 80%. I'm far from an expert on PSUs, but I would think that I should have plenty of headroom on either power supply, even if you assume the real-world headroom for each is below their rated 1200W and 1000W capacities. I think the max power draw of the 3090 FTW3 Ultra is about 200W above the TDP of the Titan X (Pascal), so I'm mentally adding 200W to the above numbers. Plus, I hadn't experienced issues with 2 Titans in SLI, and I think they combined can consume more power than my 3090. I find it interesting that I didn't run into any issues with games that use cuda cores, RT cores, and tensor cores. It only happened on GTA V, a game that only uses cuda cores, but often crashes for me (including with my Titans) for software related reasons (EDIT: when the game crashes with other cards, it's a CTD, not the entire card failing).

I had almost exactly the same issue with my FTW3 Ultra 3090, as I described in the "Another one bites the dust" thread. Screens went black, fans ramped up, whiff of burning plastic. I wasn't even gaming or putting the card under load at the time. Called EVGA tech support last night and started the RMA process, but hearing that your 2nd card also failed is making me nervous. Exactly what PSUs were you using? I have a 5 year old Seasonic Snow Silent 1050w but I'm considering getting something brand new just to be safe... doesn't sound like it did you much good, though.

To eliminate the possibility of a fault within your ststem , I would suggest that you try out the new replacement card on a friend's computer or someone else's other than yours , this is a very odd odd scenario .

I honestly didn't expect that many issues to arise with these 3000 series cards. Yes, defects happen, but this is more than we all bargain for. After my 3090FTW died after 15 minutes, my nephews 2x 3090's died one and than follow replacement, he gave up. Hearing all those people here..I don't know how one can trust even if the card runs fine now that it won’t fail tomorrow and keep bothering with exchanges. I hope evga will look deep into this and really fix whatever is going on, these cards are not cheap even for well-off person, let alone someone whose been saving $ for a long time just to be seriously disappointed

This is the reson why we buy from a company like EVGA , reast assured that the 3 year warranty will cover you for any issue , you are in safe hands , sure switching cards is a major inconvenience after spending top dollars, with that being said you want to make sure that you have a working card and a good company to back you up in case of failure we don't know what is realy going on behind the scene we don't know if Nvidia manufacturing process with with Samsung got something to do with or not but we know one thing EVGA will make it right !

I had my LED on my 3090 FTW3 Ultra a slight smoke come from it when I installed it and now have a small light in the left corner of the card only showing. Sorry to hear your card has died. I have submitted a RMA through email and have yet to get response. The card works but gets up 80+ in temp on the card when playing some games at 4k in a well ventilated case.

JayManB Watch Griffin Gaming on youtube. He describes how his 3090 FTW3 had smoke coming out of it and did a lot of the same things you are describing.
So if your PC starts smoking or catching fire... your first move would not be to unplug, but to grab your phone? Just be sure to check the batteries in your fire alarms.

micdoomThis is the reson why we buy from a company like EVGA , reast assured that the 3 year warranty will cover you for any issue , you are in safe hands
They did tell me that they're going to approve a 2nd RMA, which is great. However, I hope the cause of these failures is identified and addressed. I'd be interested to know if they'll learn anything from either of my card failures. I believe they just received my 1st 3090 today, and will be examining it soon. At the end of the day, I'd love to have a reliable 3090 FTW3 Ultra before Cyberpunk 2077 releases (though earlier would be nice). The card is great when it works as designed.
