What's the difference between 720p and 720pHD? Nomenclature. I highly doubt that the compression algorithm is changed depending on whether they classify it as HD or non-HD.

My guess is that it is exactly the same, but they no longer call it "HD" because ... who thinks 720p is HD any more?

Can barely see any difference between 720p vs 1080p anyway. Even on my new 4k dell screen. But there is a small improvement for 4k resolution between 720p clearly.

Well tbf the vast majority of youtube watch time is on mobile where 720p is much more respectable.

Lol who even uses 720p nowadays?

The difference in video size between 1080 and 720 is about 2.25 to 1

There are many parts of the country where they still do not have high speed internet.
(can't post link, so Google FCC + Broadband)

I would say that there is still a need for that standard until we start to hold broadband providers accountable for their lousy service and inept ability to provide "last mile" infrastructure.  We haven't even touched upon the subject of data-caps.

I use 720p60 if higher resolutions lag on the connection I'm using. On a phone or on a non-fullscreen youtube video, it looks fine. Heck, it looks fine on my 1080p monitor, especially compared to 480p.

I vividly remember videos of people stampeding into Walmart on Black Friday to buy 32" 720p TVs. Same thing will happen with 4k eventually too

A little off topic but does anyone else have an Apple TV that will randomly flicker black on 4K YouTube content? I really can’t figure out why it’s doing that.

I don’t think it’s coming back as HD. Right now 720p seems like starting resolution before you get into anything HD.

Re: Youtube took away the HD in 720p 2021/06/03 16:24:15 (permalink)
May have already been covered, but YT recently changed this feature again on mobile devices. It now only shows options for 'Higher Quality', 'Data Saver' and 'Advanced' (where you can then manually specify a resolution).
Point to note is that choosing 'Higher Quality' won't always give you the max quality available, as it decides this based on your current network speed, so you may still end up with 1080p even if the video is available in 4k.
Looks like maybe they're hoping people don't go into advanced to choose 4k so their server admins can stop crying themselves to sleep keeping up with capacity!

Probably because 720p isn't considered HD with 4k TVs and Monitor everywhere.

Directv and Dish are still interlaced... and probably always will be because of bandwidth.

Now that 4k is mainstream, 720p is hardly "HD" anymore. It's all relative.

That sucks. I also hate when YouTube downgrades your video while your watching it.

That's because you have set your resolution on Automatic. You just have to manually set the desired resolution you want to watch. You can do this per video or generally for every video you watch. But keep in mind that on Automatic the downgrade was made because your internet connection was not sufficient at that moment. If you manually set the resolution, the video will pause and buffer if your connection is not fast enough.

Question is, who was using that? At least in my own experience, what I try to avoid is to go at least 1080, I personally hate when YT automatically downgrades the video quality you are watching

It depends on the situation. If you are watching on your local PC or TV connected via cable it makes no sense to set it to automatic. But if you are sitting in a train for instance with a bad connection it may be a good idea to set it to automatic. The video downgrades then from time to time, but it won't stop completely...

It's just a matter of time until they decide to have only low medium and high without showing the actual resolution
