So 720p was HD before, and has changed to non HD. A rumor say's it might be to save bandwidth during this Corona crisis. Since more people are home now using the internet. It could also be they just decided to have HD in settings 1080p and above. IDK.

What's the difference between 720p and 720pHD? Nomenclature. I highly doubt that the compression algorithm is changed depending on whether they classify it as HD or non-HD.

My guess is that it is exactly the same, but they no longer call it "HD" because ... who thinks 720p is HD any more?

You guys are reading too much into it. 720p is 720p. 1080p is 1080p. The thing is they never state the encoding rates ever. That has never been a thing they exposed in the menu.

It was in the news a few days ago, and yes it was to take some stress off the bandwidth. Already done in Europe.

720p .. 1280×720

I don't use it, does not scale well to 1080p or better monitors

Umm. Stats for nerds shows everything to do with encoding rate and bandwidth.

720p was “hd” before 1080p was considered true HD. YouTube does offer an option in mobile to download high definition over WiFi only. If they lower the bitrate at the same resolution, it is no longer Hd.

So no, I don’t think people are looking into it too much. YouTube makes changes all the time, and if 720p and it’s hot garbage look are no longer considered high definition, then YouTube may be decreasing the bandwidth it uses which will remove the hd certification.

I doubt it matters since most people will still use 1080p or higher.

Yes 1080p is the norm

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Anything under 1080 is not considered HD because the Standards have gone up. I guess it's just Youtube being ahead of the curve.

Re: Youtube took away the HD in 720p 2020/04/17 07:19:13 (permalink)
LOL, I did not notice this.  Yeah I suppose nobody considers 720P to be HD anymore, but even just 10 years ago having a 40" 720P TV was definitely considered high def.  Back in the 90's 480P on Laserdisc or DVD was high end.

Haven't seen the 60FPS indicator in a while, I use a tampermoney script to force 30fps because it saves on bandwidth and I don't like the look of high framerate video or motion smoothing.

If they really needed to cut bandwidth they could drop 60fps on their end and most people probably wouldn't notice.  Most cell phone and smart-TV youtube users probably wouldn't notice if they stopped 1440P and 4K on the app or server.  Or they could just mess with the compression.

The funny thing is many channels on Cable/broadcast that are "HD" are actually 720p, a few 1080i and almost nothing is 1080p or above.

720p when never 'HD' to me.  Only 1080p was even though they've been playing everyone silly with these numbers and labels.  Technically, I had 'HD' before most with my former PC monitor in the late 90s, a Sony CRT.  Still got it collecting dust somewhere and I think still works.  It had high numbers but not wide screen of course.  Than they realized let's milk everyone on these resolutions and the rest is history.

Re: Youtube took away the HD in 720p 2021/05/24 07:41:36 (permalink)
I agree with PP. 720p can be barely considered as HD since 2008 at least. Still, I wonder why youtube took this decision only now. Maybe they simply forgot about it? Anyway, it'd be better if they occupy with smth else instead of making such changes. I personally have an issue with watching real HD videos even though I have a really cool modern PC with great settings. I don't really know what's the problem, so I sometimes download videos from youtube with https://coconvert.com/youtube-mp3-320kbps.html and even convert them to other formats. Takes some time but it's better than watching videos with freezes.

So, while I agree 720p isn't very HD these days, did youtube actually change the way 720p is encoded such that it is even lower quality than it was before? Lower the bitrate on the stream so it potentially looks like even hotter garbo?

Depending on what I'm watching, I often choose 480p, if what's being said is important, even if it wants me to automatically go higer. I rarely watch over 720p. Gaming footage was readable just fine like that. Although I do watch the videos on a laptop screen and not a big monitor or a tv...

They always called 1080p "Full HD" so I'm glad they're not calling 720p HD anymore. It never really was.

In my experience auto depends on the current usage vs capability of your connection. If you are downloading a file for instance, it can dip very low. After some time it auto corrects to higher speed.

I have installed a plug-in called YouTube enhancer and it set's the quality to the max setting available for every video automatically. Nice piece of software. I have to admit this way I am using over 500GB per month data traffic. But as I don't have a cap it's no problem for me and worth the extra quality...

I'm assuming it's just the flow of improving technology. 1080p is a baseline standard that you'll find these days so I would assume 144p might be removed sometime in the not-so-distant future and after a few decade it'll be 720p's turn.

When Sony coined the "Full HD" term for 1080p, that was the point when people started getting away from accepting 720p as HD.

Times have changed man. 1080p is next up. As resolution goes up and is more commonly used, the smaller resolutions won't feel like high resolution anymore.
