My son & I put together his first system a couple of years ago and we're trying to squeeze another 2 years out of it before doing another build.   System specs:
  • MB: EVGA Z87 Classified 152-HW-E878 (BIOS 1.05)
  • CPU: i5-4690K @ 3.5GHz
  • RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3, BLT2K8G3D1608ET3LX0, 1600 MHz. 8-8-8-24 1.5V
  • VIDEO: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12 GAMING X 3GB
  • BOOT HD: INTEL SSDSC2KW512G8
  • OS: Windows 10, 64-bin
I locally purchased used i7-4790K (& new fan) and a RX 590 graphics card to give him a boost to former gaming glory.  Checking the EVGA Downloads Center, the highest BIOS available for the MB is 1.09 but listed for Windows 8/7/Vista/XP.  The current BIOS we have loaded is 1.05.  How do I identify the BIOS I need for the CPU & video upgrades?  Optimally, I'd like to upgrade the BIOS and any other firmware needed, drop the new hardware in, see a happy POST, and boot without problem into Windows … all without swapping out the motherboard.  Help?

Yes you can update to latest Version of BIOS to 1.09 that all support for Windows 10 no problem without any issue with your new i7 4790k. This motherboard CPU support only i3 i5 and i7 Haswell 1150 CPU

OS: All Windows Version (You can update for your motherboard)
Driver Version: 1.09
Release Date: 10/9/2014
Driver File: Download
·       Adds support for G3258 CPU overclocking
·       Improve mouse support
·       Improve system stability

For version 1.09 do support Windows 10 as well

You may need USB to boot up BIOS setting firmware
Make sure you have set default your motherboard BIOS CMOS Setting before flash update your BIOS with no overclock!!!

Yeah, definately update to v1.09 just simply because there's been some significant fixes and enhancements since v1.05.

Use the same Windows or USB flash drive (preferably) installation methods as described in the v1.08 update directions.

You can quickly and easily create a bootable USB flash drive with Rufus, selecting to format it with a FAT32 file system (under the File system dropdown) and FreeDOS (under the Boot selection dropdown.)

Re: Z87 Classified - do I need BIOS upgrade for i7-4790K and RX 590 ??? 2019/12/27 18:56:04 (permalink)
Oh boy, head-scratcher here.  I was able to upgrade BIOS from 1.05 to 1.09 booting to USB (good tip to use RUFUS) but in the process the BIOS (which I reset to default) now boots to an older SDD (DISK 0) with an old profile.  The new SSD (DISK 1) isn't found on the BIOS.  When the OS loads, I can see the new SSD, but no drive letter is assigned (see screen shot).  I could change the drive letter of DISK 0 to "F:" or something and add drive DISK 1 to "C" which I believe is desired setting, but I'm afraid I will not be able to get back in.  Help?

Glad to hear you have update your BIOS latest version
I am not sure how to help you!!
What I am thinking if your New SSD is currently using Windows OS in Disk 1 rather to old SSD disk 0?
If your have Master boot SSD Windows OS (Disk 1) then try remove old SSD Disk 0 and it should boot up on New SSD 1.
Do you have two Windows OS on both SSD? If so try delete format on old SSD disk 0 and it will not boot to disk 0 again?
I not sure if this help you?

The new SSD (DISK 1) isn't found on the BIOS.

Weird..See if maybe there's a setting in the BIOS -> BOOT section that has an option to set "Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities" like there is in a Z97 Classified BIOS and see if it's there and select the Disk 1 SSD to at least make it show up in the normal Boot Priority options.

Had to do that with an Asus Z77, but that was using HDDs.

Ok ... Happy New Year and update to our build.
    1. Have all drives recognized, not sure what happened, reconnected physical connections of drives, changed slots, all are recognized now.  WeAdded Radeon 590x card, we like boost in performance
      • 3D Mark Benchmark test results
      • Original: 3683
      • +video card: 4279
      • +video card & CPU: 4465
PROBLEM:
Build worked for ~1 days to include bench marking and gaming before a random BSOD, but since has repeatedly failed to load Windows.  Sometimes it gets to logo screen but more often it fails to POST, MB showing error codes 32 and 33 (CPU post-memory initialization).  I suspect either the i7-4790K CPU is bad (used) or the default settings in the BIOS (v1.09) need to be tweaked (increase voltage?).  Is it just incompatible with this MB?
    • Complete transparency, the seller of the CPU had similar hardship with a Gigabyte Z97 MB (he's offered money back on the CPU).  I've just never seen a bad CPU so this is new to me.

  • 32 - CPU post-memory initialization is started
  • 33 - CPU post-memory initialization. Cache initialization

In my mind, that points towards a memory related issue. If you have XMP RAM, I would make sure your XMP profile is set. You can also test each stick of RAM separately.

One thing to look for on the CPU... if it was delided, it may have been botched. Things you can look for is at the bottom of the CPU, look on the bottom of the CPU. Look closely, any of those tiny transistors in the middle of the CPU to see if any have been snapped off. They are very small and you might need to snap a picture with your phone and take a closer look with the zoom.
