Intel is slowly realizing plans to "one up" its GPU game starting from first 10 nm Ice Lake CPUs that feature Gen11 graphics, equipping users of integrated GPUs with much more performance than they previously got. Fortunately, Intel doesn't plan to stop there. Thanks to the recent pull request found on GitLab Mesa repository, we can now expect to receive biggest GPU performance bump in over a decade with the arrival of Gen12 based GPUs, found on next generation Tiger Lake processors.

Planned for release sometime around 2020/2021 (with Tiger Lake), Gen12 graphics features a complete overhaul of Execution Unit in a way we haven't seen since i965 debut. There will be less hardware logic that checks data for coherency, possibly resulting in lower latency and higher performance. That workload will shift from logic built into hardware, to compilers for them to figure out if data is correct or not, resulting in less wasted GPU clock cycles dedicated to that function.

Personally I think Intel has dragged its feet far too long for this revamp.

yeah, lets see if they can shake up the graphics card market , since they've stalled their progress on the cpu front for so long

Well Intel has put their own foot in their mouths for the past 2 years. Too many issues such as security vulnerabilities and failure to get 10nm on their desktop CPUs (still ongoing).

I'm not an AMD fanboy but AMD has already completed next year's CPU design and is working on the 2021 CPU design. It wouldn't surprise me if AMD already had engineering samples for next year's AMD CPUs.

Intel has sit on their butts far too long on the cpu side, what makes us think ya could care about GPU's, less its just another lazy way to gain a few extra bucks...    Its like Intel porting their CPU core to GPU's like Game devs porrting to Console, just a cash grab from my pov...

Hopefully it's a big improvement since they really did an impressive job making built in graphics ok for a while and then didn't really improve much as time went on. Hopefully some work from the standalone GPU also goes into this update.

Intel and AMD have both dragged their feet to improve hardware offerings. Microsoft has to take some of the blame as well.
DX12 is supposed to improve on the situation but so far that has not delivered nearly as much as the hype would have you believe

True that brother.  I remember the DX12 hype which got me into the upgrade mode.  Probably the most disappointing time of my PC life. lol

With the amount of money, knowledge and super engineers they have at Intel there is no excuse for them to be as far behind as they are unless its by design, either working with AMD at the upper most levels of the companys or they really were that drunk on there own designs and money grabs that they let AMD get this far ahead. Either is not good when extrapolated to there ends!

Personally, I'm not counting on Intel. They do like to drag their feet when they are leading.

the move to smaller transistors has become very expensive

for that reason larger wafers are still likely as ever

I've heard that line before...i m just going to sit tight and keep eating popcorn like my friend below

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

IGPs are still IGPs... when the performance is that low, even a small increase has a disproportionate effect compared to prior generations.

Going to be funny with Intel trying to hype up its Gen12 graphics at the same time it's trying to sell discrete GPUs again.

They have to have a drastic shift if they're to be competitive in discrete video cards. The architecture move has to be tied to that. Either way, Radeon is both good at IGPs and discrete, so this is just building upon the manpower they pilfered from Radeon.
