Hey All,

Im relatively experienced with overclocking from my previous build.  Previously I had an EVGA 980ti Hydro and was able to pull ~+80cc/+300mc with no issues.  This new build however I was only able to get a stable +15cc/+30mc before crashing.  In game, 3DMark and heaven all cause crashes.  Iam pretty bummed out about it.  My only concern is my PC is a full custom loop and I had to install the waterblock on the card myself because of the shortage at the time.  I followed the instructions meticulously and applied what i thought was appropriate thermal paste.  I would've thought maybe i messed up something while putting it all together, but the odd thing is the card performs perfectly fine at stock speeds without any indication of any issues.  Temps all look good too, generally around mid 40s no in game crashes.  I have tried both normal and OC bios and still hit that wall above +15.  Any suggestions or should I just never go to Vegas Thanks!

Specs:
Aorus Master Mobo (bios up to date)
9900K 5.0ghz @ 1.36v
G.Skill Trident 16GB @ 3000Mhz
Win 10

Are you using two separate pci-e power cables to power the gpu instead of a single cable that splits into dual 6+2's?

    Hi Sajin,

I am using 2 separate VGA cables each that have the 6+2 plugged into the GPU and the other end that is plugged into the PSU full 8-pin side.

Edit: also if it matters on the PSU end both 8 pins are plugged into VGA slots# 3&4

    Thanks!

Is your psu a single rail unit?

That psu is a single rail unit, so you're good. Looks like you didn't win the lotto.

Thanks for all you help with this Sajin.  Just one more thing, I was reading on other forums that I should try cleaning and reapplying the thermal grease?  I had applied it in a similar to the way I applied it to my CPU, just a pea sized of grease on the center of the GPU.  Someone had said I was supposed to lightly coat the entire chip before installing the block.  He was saying the GPU may not be getting any cooling in those corners causing the card not to overclock much.  I just didnt know how correct that information is.  Thanks again.

No problem. Doing the dot, or line method on the gpu is recommended as spreading the paste could result in air bubbles being created in the paste when mounting the cooler. If you didn't use enough paste on the gpu then it's possible the corners aren't covered which could cause problems.

That helps a lot now knowing that the dot or line method was the correct way. I know I did apply the correct amount of paste too, so now I am convinced I just got unlucky with the card.    Thanks again for the help with this.  Cheers.
