I have been using nVidia drivers 397.64 for a while and tried upgrading to the latest drivers last night, version 398.82. After testing out different versions it seems that any driver after 397.64 causes the HDMI audio connection to drop after about 30 seconds of silence. When sounds start again there is about 3 seconds where the GPU and the receiver (Onkyo TX-NR626) are handshaking to reconnect and those 3ish seconds of audio are lost. System sounds are lost, first moments of a song, and dialog goes missing. This is a hugely aggravating problem! I am running Windows 10 64, and a 1080 Ti Founders Edition (purchased through EVGA). Is there a fix or workaround? I use this PC attached to an entertainment center and missing audio just will not do. Thank you.

Hello Zapper_Weisman! If you go back to the older driver version, does the issue go away? Also, are you able to test by connecting an optical cable to connect your motherboard's audio output to the receiver, thus bypassing the HDMI audio?

I forgot to mention that yes, going back to driver version 397.64 fixes it right away. Any version after that causes this problem. I tested 3 other versions, 390.77, 398.36, and 398.82 and they are all broken too. Optical is different and weather it works or not, I don't feel it's relevant. This is some sort of HDMI connection issue. I have a USB audio adapter that works just fine with no delay. Seems like an HDMI thing.

Why don't you just uninstall the nvidia hd audio driver, and just allow windows to run off its default driver?

Because Windows 10 always wants to install the nVidia driver off of Windows Update anyway. Not really a solution in my mind.

How to Show or Hide Windows 10 Updates/Upgrades..Is what I do, and use a .bat file to run the Show or Hide Updates Tool and check for/hide (NVIDIA driver and other) updates every day on a schedule..Food for thought.

Disabling Windows Update in services.msc is not a good idea..That will disable all updates..Turning on a Metered Connection for your particular connection in the Connection Properties and then selectively choosing which updates you want to hide (or show again) with the Show or Hide Updates Tool is the way to go.

Maybe, but I'll take my chances. I don't need windows forcing me an update that nukes my system.

I have complete and total control of which driver updates get installed and which one's don't using a Metered Connection and the Show or Hide Updates Tool..This works flawlessly for me..It's good for running and keeping an older NVIDIA (or other) driver and not have it get auto-updated through Windows Update, but yet still allows security and other choice updates installed that are not hidden..Win10 Pro and Enterprise (I think) has the feature to block updates..Win10 Home, not.

This is a driver bug. Other than the usual work around(s) you can submit a report to Nvidia. https://www.nvidia.com/ob...rqualityassurance.html

30 seconds of silence dropping hdmi is expected behavior, not doing so previously was the bug. its been the case for the last 6 years.
