X58 classified RMA a while back was this x79 dark. Didn't have a cpu for it so it's been sitting on the shelf for over half a decade. Bought a i7-3970X. Slapped it in. Same psu. Ram (I added two more sticks for 32gb total) same aio corsair loop. New case. New gpu. From what I've seen I need a new bios chip? Or something along those lines.... Thanks for the help I've been gone from here for many many moons now.

hi Lycan_warlod and welcome back! Have you tried any of the other two BIOS switches on your motherboard and did you reset the CMOS settings?

I have not. I shall try that tomorrow. Computer is currently located at my sisters and they kicked me out lol. Reset with the normal red reset switch correct?

Yes, you can use the little red switch (hold down for about 10  seconds) or do it the old fashion way by removing the battery temporarily. the BIOS switch is located near the 24-pin connector.

The bios chip was near the 24 pin. But the bios switch is at the bottom right. It was on the 3rd toggle position. Which makes a red light appear by the bios chip. The 2nd position (middle) was the only time I've seen the x79 dark screen. The 1st position does the same as the bios chip.

Screen shows cursor blinking in top left hand corner. Hit red reset on each of the bios toggle switch positions. Still no dice.

Can you tell us exactly what model motherboard you have and the supporting components?

Didn't know there was more than one x79 dark. Cpu listed above. Corsair ram. Ram was working before on a X58 mobo. I've seen posts about getting a new bios chip. I have the board registered on my account.

The original X79 Dark shipped with Bluetooth.  The 2nd revision it didn't.  That's the only difference I'm aware of.  I do find it unlikely that all three BIOS chips are no good on your board, although I suppose anything's possible.

The Dark boards originally shipped with the three BIOS's supporting the 3xxx series CPU's.  It was later that the 4xxx series chips released and new BIOS revisions to support them were provided.  People that had already bought a 4xxx series chip and then got a Dark board found they had no way to flash the updated BIOS rev without a 3xxx series chip.  That's when EVGA was sending out new BIOS chips already flashed for the 4xxx series.  There may have been other exceptions as well.

I'm wondering if your board doesn't want to play nice with your ram or possibly a bent pin(s) in the CPU socket.

Pins were immaculate. Motherboard has literally been in a box almost a decade. So I find it quite reasonable it's a bios issue or a new chip issue given the years of disuse. Screenshot of my mobo

One stick of ram, system drive only (or 1 drive) and see what happens with only those items connected. If you have a much older video card try that as well.

alright, so left 4 memory RAM sticks installed. i can get to the "windows startup" screen. start windows normally, last known configuration, and safe mode all blue screen after about 4 seconds of the windows loading color wheel. sticks on the right, 5-8....don't think it boots. just gives a different #6 starting error code....and the PCIE slot on/off switch LEDS blink yellow solid. all of them. so yeah don't know what that is. gonna go try and find my dvd copy of 7 pro. hopefully fix the windows startup issue. that said, the x79 screen shows up very late in the boot process, the HD controller screen shows first. I also see no prompt to get into the evga bios. this is my first time with a gui bios. i havent tried all 3 bios toggle settings. I will see if that helps anything. other than that...yeah, at least some progress.

so good news, figured out the big problem. HDs were set as AHCI in my bios, and not IDE. switched it. booted right up. so yeah, gonna work on getting the other sticks of RAM in and reassembling my wiring lol. downloaded the new BIOS and will flash that.
    hopefully this is case closed.

thanks for the help and suggestions again

Good to hear you got it resolved...  I am kind of suprised that was what fixed your issue though.  In any case, glad you're up and running.

whats crazy is, one of my hard drives (4TB pulled from the recently working system). when it is plugged into, ANY of my 10 sata ports.....it causes the motherboard to error out. either locking up with just a cursor blinking on the screen. or it locks up showing this error:
Marvell, 88se91xx adapter. Bios version 1.0.0.0032
    Bus:dev 8:0 initializing....

so yeah....never seen a hard drive cause that. sooooo no idea how to fix that issue. biggest problem i have is i have alot of irreplaceable data on there. may try putting it in an external case.
