BIOS 2.02/2.04/2.06 Updates

  • Update CPU microcode for Intel security
This BIOS is intended to update the CPU microcode to increase security related to the reported Spectre vulnerability for processors used on Z97 motherboards.  This microcode update is expected to be used in conjunction with related patches from your Operating System or VMM to ensure complete protection from reported vulnerabilities.

Windows Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your motherboard:
         152-HR-E979-KR - EVGA Z97 Classified - v2.06
         142-HR-E977-KR - EVGA Z97 FTW - v2.04
         111-HR-E973-KR - EVGA Z97 Stinger WiFi - v2.04
         111-HR-E972-KR - EVGA Z97 Stinger Core 3d - v2.02
  • First go into your BIOS and load defaults, save and exit.
  • Close all open programs.
  • Go into the folder where you unzipped this package and double-click update.bat
  • Press Y to start the flash process.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE FLASH PROCESS
  • After the flashing is finished, the system will automatically shut down. Then power on again and go into BIOS to setup.
  • NOTE: If flash box immediately closes after flash attempt, the flash may need to be run from a CMD prompt with administrator privileges or DOS version.

BIOS Installation
  • Extract the contents of .zip file to USB flash drive (must be formatted as FAT32)
  • Reboot the machine and go into the system BIOS
  • From the BIOS, navigate to the Save & Exit tab and open "Select BIOS File."
  • Select the .bin file you wish to flash.

[Note - these BIOS updates were originally uploaded on 4/16.  There have been no new releases since 4/16.]

I can't install Intel Management Engine after updating to this bios. Any attempt to install leads to a bsod (page fault in non paged area). I've run Windows memory diagnostic tool and memtest and the ram isn't showing any errors. I'm using an i5-5675C/Z97 FTW/8GB DDR3 1600

    CPU- Intel Core i7-6850K
GPU- (2) EVGA GTX 1070 FTW in SLI
    MB- Asus ROG Strix X99
    PSU- Corsair AX1200i
    Case- Phanteks Enthoo Pro M

I'm assuming you're using the 4790K in your signature? I've tried everything to get it to work but it's constant bsod's with my 5675C.

    Hi BlueRaider,

I sent this report to our BIOS team, but they cannot reproduce the error.  They asked if you can check the Management Engine information under the BIOS PCH page and take a screenshot.  If the ME version shows "N/A", then you can try to clear CMOS first, and then reflash the BIOS if that still fails.

Hi, after updating I noticed that when watching videos on youtube I always hear small and fast latches on the audio.

Hello, I discovered the problem, this is the last version of Chrome.

    Thank you

    Hi,

After updating to this bios v2.06 on my Z97 Classified, I no longer see the "+12V PCIE Power Source" option. In previous installed BIOS v1.08, I had it set to "6 Pin", because I have 2x EVGA GTX970 in SLI + EVGA GTX960, and an ASUS PCE-A68 802.1ac network card.
Is it automatically set to "6 Pin" if power connector is attached?  I just want to make sure my PCIE devices are getting the additional power.

    Thanks

I am doing a clean install, only Windows 10 Pro on the drive at this point. When I follow the BIOS update instructions for Z97 Classified, I get the error:

"The system cannot find the path specified.
'fptw64' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
    ==========================================================
. Finish update! Please press any key for restart
    ==========================================================
Press any key to continue... "

I looked at the batch file, and I see the section with the cd command and variable, but I don't remember enough DOS to edit it properly, but I know it's simple. Can you advise. Thx.

I fixed the issue. The above file has the commands fixed so you won't get the "'fptw64' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." error.

THANK YOU   Sajin for the batch update for the Z97 Classified. And especially for the PM. I would have responded to your PM, but there are certain qualifications to merit the ability to do so. I just saw your most recent, and the best I could do was reply here. I just updated it. I am trying to get that 5th single 1x8 to see a device. Works on all other slots. All of the others 16 & 8 do fine together as long as nothing in that single. Once I do, the system will only see slot 0.

I just did the update, it was seamless. The board has 3. I'll see what happens.

    Thanks again,

Most likely. If you're running more than two video cards you should have the supplemental 6-pin plugged into the motherboard.

I think iv hit a wall.
hey guys. Got a EVGA Z97 classified.
Downloaded BIOS update from EVGA website, ran it from desktop. Bios Update completed fine. asked to reboot. Hit restart.... (done this before without issues - this time it was on new updated W10 install)

Started to get error beeps from the mother board and all the VD1-VD5 started to blink red. PC will then reboot and again black screen. Tried to troubleshoot and fix, could not access BIOS etc after a few hours and going through the manual came across the BIOS switch, decided to push it and - Great. It posted, switching the BIOS back to 1.02 and allowed me to boot to windows.
Anyway thinking that download might have got corrupted... re-downloaded the BIOS update and once again ran the update from the desktop installer.... Same issue! damn, Dropped the BIOS switch to the last slot and it booted up again and I guess im on my last life. Once it goes into that stage I have ZERO access to BIOS screen. screens just black, tried different monitors, etc etc.

What led to doing an BIOS update was a new install of windows, new SSDs which led to booting up fine on some occasions and on some the BIOS cant be accessed. So I thought a BIOS update will hopefully fix it.... (long story short)

What do you guys think? Am I on my last life?
Can the BIOS 1 and 2 that have been nuked be re-flashed?
My rigs fully water cooled with 2, 980 tis so not easy to dismantle...... I can boot fine and access the BIOS fine now...

thoughts? anyone else been through the same.

    Easy...

#1 Move the bios selector switch to the broken bios while inside windows.
#2 Download the latest bios, or an older bios version from the evga website, and flash the bios while inside windows.
#3 Reboot and you're all done.

I wish if life could be that easy Sajin :)

When Iv got the bios switch in any other location I get zero boot to windows or even a bios screen.
I just get black screens on my monitors.
    Tried hdmi
    Display port
    Only connecting one.
    Removing hard drives
    Removing MB battery.
    Doing the rain dance :)

    You name it man.
If the switch is in any other position I get black screens. If it’s in the one that’s working I get boot to windows and even access to bios.
Wondering now if my mother board is throwing in the towel.
Iv never had an issue where I couldn’t get into the bios ever before....

It can be that easy as long as you have one bios that allows you to boot into windows to do the reflashing.

Sadly no joy. While booted up in windows 10 I flipped the bios switch to another one that’s not working. Flashed ok. Rebooted. Same issue. Changed bios switch to one that’s working. Logged in. Switched bios switch to another one that’s not working. Bios flashed. Flashed ok. Rebooted. Same issue. Black screen. No access to bios. Computer auto restarts. After a min of beeping.
    : /
So Iv got one bios switch that’s working.

I hope he puts a final resolution post on this. A good one to bookmark for reference. Makes me wonder. Since I'm relatively free this evening I think I'll mock it all up and test that unresponsive 1x8 slot with an older BIOS and pull out some more hair. It's worth a shot.

Sajin, you might want to make a post of that, it's got to be in a Sticky somewhere. Or maybe as an addition to the original post by EVGATech_JLee calling attention to the BIOS updates. Maybe explain a little of the strategy behind maintaining a healthy backup BIOS. When you talk of faulty BIOS chips, they're replaceable by the end user, right? I've done it before on a normal board with a single BIOS, but not with more than one.

IF YOU HAVE THE BLESSING TO HAVE A MULTI-BIOS MOTHERBOARD, NEVER FLASH YOUR LAST WORKING BIOS. ALWAYS, ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP BEFORE YOU FLASH. THIRD TIME IS NOT THE CHARM HERE.

Probably leave out "HAVE THE BLESSING" just for clarity, but it should be noted that when doing anything with the BIOS, praying and invoking all spiritual help available is highly recommended.

The Z97 Classified & Z97 FTW come with one replaceable bios chip that can be replaced by the end user. The others have to be soldered in which will void they warranty if you do it yourself.

    Update Time.

Downloaded and flashed 204 from desktop to bad bios
    Rebooted same issue.
    Beeps and 4F
Switched bios back to working one.
    Rebooted into windows
    Switched to other corrupt bios.
    Download and flashed 202
    Rebooted
    Beeps and 4F
Switched bios back to working one.
    Rebooted to windows 10
    Switched to faulty bios
    Downloaded and flashed 107
    Rebooted
    Same beeps and 4F
Switched BIOS back to working one
    Rebooted
    No beeps.
    No bios screen
    No windows
Briefly hangs on 4F before carrying on and sticking on 71
    vd1-vd5 all flashing
    Then it auto restarts.
    Removed battery
    Powered off on etc
    Same issue.
Can’t get into windows at all now.

Pretty gutted. Should have quit while I still had one working bios 😜

Damn that really sucks... Well Sajin did say that one of the BIOS chips are replaceable so you should try contacting EVGA support and see if they can send a new one, if not maybe you can buy one somewhere, not to sure. There may still be hope.

yep really sucks. but hey when your on your last BIOS kids... dont roll the dice!!!
iv emailed EVGA as well hoping for a way forward. It's a shame as I just took it apart for maintenance a few months back, flushed, cleaned and changed the liquid as well (Yellow to white as Yellow Pastel was really messing up and changing to brown/orange).
    Oh well.

Damn. Nice loop though! I'm actually considering doing my first custom loop next month or maybe a bit after, depends when I get around to selling my old motherboard and cpu. Probably not going to go with hardline tubing even though it looks better, mainly for ease of maintenance.

You would be surprised how good soft tubing could look these days.
My first build (in yellow) was all hard aryclic tubes. Even right down in the lower compartment and pedestal.
When I rebuilt. I moved a my rad plus did a lot of tweaks and did the job better then I did the first time around and the tubing in the pedestal is now all soft tubing. All hard up top.

Do it man. We all find peace in our own ways.
