That user was using a 4tb drive. Using GPT partition method, is there a limit? Would it support the newer sizes by WD/Seagate such as 6/8/10/12tb?

Right now I don't know of anyone who has higher than a 2TB drive on an X58. The X58 doesn't have UEFI so there is a limitation of sorts. You could have a 4TB drive but you would probably have to partition it.

Depends on what your partition is made out of. MBR = 2TB limit. GPT = 256TB limit.

You could try a higher size drive, don't know if it would work but GPT would be needed. I suggest you contact EVGA tech support to see what they have to say.

Yes but normally you need UEFI as well I believe. X58 doesn't have UEFI.

I have 3tb drives already... one is just nearly capacity and the other is half full... looking to replace those with larger drives...

The SSD with the operating system is MBR, but the two 3tb drives are both GPT partitions and the full volume is recognized. Just wanting to make sure that's going to stay the same if I move up in size, and it sounds like it will, if GPT supports up to 256tb.

256TB is correct for GPT under windows...

How big can a GPT disk be?

In theory, a GPT disk can be up to 2^64 logical blocks in length. Logical blocks are commonly 512 bytes in size.
The maximum partition (and disk) size is a function of the operating system version. Windows XP and the original release of Windows Server 2003 have a limit of 2TB per physical disk, including all partitions. For Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP x64 edition, and later versions, the maximum raw partition of 18 exabytes can be supported. (Windows file systems currently are limited to 256 terabytes each.)

Nope.

Is UEFI required for a GPT disk?

No. GPT disks are self-identifying. All the information needed to interpret the partitioning scheme of a GPT disk is completely contained in structures in specified locations on the physical media.

I contacted one of our forum  members who still has his X58 running quite fine. He has 3 SSD's for 1.31 TB
and two Seagate Constellation ES ST31000524NS 1TB's  raided for 1.82 TB

i run GPT on all my drives in my x58 rig, one drive is a 8TB so it will work. the other two are a Raid 0 3TB each for a total of 6TB. my boot drive is only 512GB SSD but it is GPT also.
