UPDATE 3.30pm: Since we reported on this story more details have come to light via a French note to investors issued at the end of last month. This note indicates the new Ataribox is to be crowdfunded, a detail which was left out of today's press release.

In a newsletter published online, Atari revealed the sleek design for their first console in over 20 years.
"Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari," wrote the Atari Project Team.
The Ataribox is inspired by the classic Atari consoles, with a trademark wood design, ribbed lines and raised back. The company revealed the console will be available in either a wood or black/red edition.

It looks sleek. I hope it provides a lot of entertainment, because it may be my first console in almost 4 years.

lol why is crowd funding still a thing? Are gamers perpetually poor consumers?

Is this a retro console that plays classic Atari games? Or are they trying to compete with Sony/Microsoft?

If done well it could be really cool, lots of classic HARD old Atari games, that were a lot of fun.  A new generation of gamers could see games with no end, unlike the Skyrim type, and games that were punishingly hard for the first level and no walkthrough to make it pitifully easy.

What'd be your prefferedx game roster on the console, if say there were 20 games to be put on it?

They honestly need to evaluate the way they run things like that.
Like, they would literally make MORE money my keeping stocks up, and distributing more products. It's silly. The switch has this issue too, and sooo many more people would've bought themselves a switch if they could, giving nintendo the funds to actually create more decent content in games, consoles and everything else they do.

The design is sleek AF. modern and retro at the same time. I hope it takes off but I don't see them being able to get enough devs on board to challenge nintendo/sony/microsoft. Takes a lot of investment now to get into the console market

OK, been a while, and I had a 2600, but Starmaster, Moon Sweeper, Zaxxon, Combat (if for no other reason than Tank Pong), River raid, Indiana Jones and the Raiders..., Adventure, Berzerk (my first mindless shooter), Asteroids, Battlezone, Missile Command, Pheonix, Pole Position (or am I thinking of the Atari 130XE?), Pitfall, Joust (again was that the 130 XE?).
As I didn't have a 5200 or a 7800 I cant say for those.  If the XE or the ST games are in it, River Rat form the XE was hilarious, which I kinda played backwards, it was a downscroller speedboat game where you are getting score by taking jumps and things like that and lose score by running people/ducks/waterskiers, etc over, I would try to go from checkpoint to checkpoint and maintain 0 score, I guess that is what got me prepped for Carmeggedon later on, and for the Atari ST, GATO, the WW2 sub sim.

Nintendo needs to really consider the retro console idea. They could port the same games that was on the NES classic to the PS4, Xbox One and Windows 10 and sell it for $60 and people would buy it.

At the very least they should make tons of the SNES classic and then offer a NES controller. The controller should be able to hold all the games since NES games are so small and if the system detects the NES classic controller it could boot to a list of the NES games. Instantly everyone is happy again even if they didn't get an NES classic.

That is how you would manage the brands classic library to bring in enough money to roll around in like a dirty little piggy.

The real factor is price and what it will play. If Atari is able to get classic arcade games or classic console games not owned by Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft they could have a lot of classic hits on the system for retro gamers. Also casual gamers are a big market but of course the system would have to be a price not to break the bank.
