Got an Acer Predator XB241YU, turned out to be faulty... Also in general I didn't like it either, it had a lot of glare, 24" is a bit small... So it got returned.
Looking for a new one now.

What's everyones suggestion? My budget is likely about $600ish. I'm mainly wanting to use this for Battlefield 1. I'm not sure how well my System will handle all games in 1440P/ Ultra, I'd like to get at least 60FPS but I'm unsure if the 1070 can do that for all games. It might just be my experience with BF1 and its incredibly poor optimization.

I NEED a Gsync monitor, that is very important. I'm unsure if the 144hz is necessary to be completely honest. For web browsing and watching TV/ videos, most videos are native at 1080P/60hz... When I had the Acer Predator it had problems running with another screen, standalone I saw 0 difference running that screen vs a 1080P 60hz for web browsing/ movies/ videos.

Specs:
i7 6700k
EVGA 1070 FTW
16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200mhz
ASUS Z170 PRO
EVGA 750W G2
Samsung EVO SSD

Thanks!

    Thanks guys!

I was considering the ASUS ROG monitor like Sajin said, the difference between that ASUS ROG and the Dell mainly is going to be the panel type right? I believe the ASUS is a IPS which has better color, and the Dell is a TN which may be a few ms faster?

And either of you run a secondary monitor just for general browsing that's a lower resolution or lower refresh rate?

The PG278Q is a TN panel. The PG279Q is the IPS one (for about $100-150 more). I love my PG279Q although IPS glow is something you'll have to get used to. (NOT backlight bleed...there's a difference)

Same here and it's been a great monitor.  I've owned it since it first launched.

I also run an additional display with it at all times and sometimes a TV as well for 3 displays.  No issue's to report.  The 2nd display and TV are both 1080P.

Yes I run the S2716DG and a 4k 60 Hz samsung monitor as secondary. S2716DG is indeed TN but has the best color and viewing angles of any TN I have used. The ASUS ROG are very nice as well.

Whichever monitor I end up getting, ill be running a 1080P 60hz monitor as a secondary monitor, just need to make sure that'll work haha.

Any of you have an i7 6700k or 4790k or something similar with a GTX 1070 and play BF1?

I'm trying to get a feel for how my experience may be, for example average FPS.

If you've been exposed to IPS technology, it's really hard to go from IPS to TN.
The same can be said for 144Hz > 60Hz.

I initially upgraded two ASUS PA238Q monitors to two BenQ Zowie XL2430's. The BenQ monitors were nice but they were TN panels and it was something I just couldn't get past. Things looked washed out and viewing angles felt extreme even slightly off. I loved 144Hz though and going back to the ASUS PA238Q IPS screens was hard because 60fps now seemed choppy!

I ended up returning the XL2430 monitors, which were great but I'd just been accustomed to IPS for so long it was impossible for me to be happy.

That brings me to recently, at this point my requirements were:
    144Hz
    IPS

    I found that this combination is actually particularly rare, where the only options are;
    Acer Predator XB271HU
    ASUS ROG PG279Q

    Both are 144Hz/165Hz OC + IPS Panel + G-Sync + 1440p

These are both £600-£700 monitors so it was a big investment but it felt like the only way it would feel like an upgrade.

After reading reviews/videos of these two monitors I decided to go with the ASUS ones as it seems like the build quality is a step above Acer's and the way you interact with the monitor was better (joystick on back). Also since I will have them mounted on a Vesa stand, I could get rid of the ASUS ROG branding, but this was not the case for the red predator logo on the Acers.

Bare in mind though, with both of these monitors - it is a lottery as to if you will get a good panel. The Acer seems to have a slightly better average of a good panel but I'm not of current quality control issues. When I get mine, if it is bad, I'll return it and reorder another. Amazon is amazing with returns.

    If I was you I'd either;
    • One of the ASUS 27/1440/TN/G-Sync monitors. (BenQ ones do not offer G-Sync)
    • The SG Dell monitors that are 27/TN/G-sync/1440/60Hz+
    • Or save a little longer and make the full upgrade that will cover you for years to come (IPS/144Hz+/1440/G-Sync) Where 1440p will probably move to be the standard, where 1070s+ can run fps exceeding 60 so you'll want the extra Hz to see them, the G-sync for fluidity and 27 inches for that slightly bigger screen you're after.

I've got a pair of the Dell S2716DG monitors and have no issues with them...  I went from IPS to TN and the Dell panels are really much better than the average TN panel so it wasn't a big deal.  Also the dell monitors are 144Hz NOT 60Hz.  I personally notice a huge difference between 60Hz and 144Hz - if my settings reset and I get stuck at 60Hz I can tell immediately.

As far as BF1 with my 4790K and 980ti on a mixture of high/ultra settings I can usually avg around 120FPS which should be similar to your performance.  If I back down the antialias settings a bit more I can usually stay at 144FPS most of the time.  With 1440p it already looks so much better so I don't really notice much difference from the anti-alias being off or lowered.

Its not so much not being able to afford a better monitor, its just so much as seeing if its honestly worth spending so much.
I've always used a TN panel, and I think i've always used 60hz as well so I don't know what an IPS panel physically will look like.

    I'm seeing that i'll pretty much be spending at least $700 for a 1440P/144hz/Gsync/IPS monitor, I'm kinda wishing I'd gotten a 1080 initially :/
I'll likely go with one of the ASUS ROG ones, it seems like generally those are the best out there and what most people run.

The thing is I might likely have to get a 1080P 144hz or a second 144hz monitor to run alongside the 1440P that I get. I've heard that running a 144hz and a 60hz monitor as a secondary monitor can lead to terrible stuttering. Not sure if you guys have any suggestions there, i'd be just for browsing, no need for anything pricey, I may even just go for refurbished.

What do you mean by lottery if I get a good panel? Do you mean like dead pixels? Or the monitor just not functioning properly out of the box due to QC?

Also... real quickie, I feel like this may be somewhat normal, but I just need to make sure, I don't want to have this problem when I drop $700 on a monitor.

Right now in games I'm getting stuttering/ microstutter if I have Vsync OFF. I'll get really high FPS, and the FPS isn't dropping all over the place, but I get stuttering. In BF1 if I try to turn the resolution scale up from 100 to 115 or 120, The stuttering becomes even worse, It becomes a lag like stutter, stuttering becomes slower like stutter once per second, same happens if I try to cap my FPS, the stuttering gets worse.
Yet right when I turn on Vsync, the stuttering goes away completely no screen tear, no input lag, etc nothing.
Vsync on is how I normally play and it's fine, but I know when I get a 144hz monitor I won't be able to use Vsync because my games won't hit 144FPS.

Is this somewhat normal for some setups running a 1080P 60hz monitor? I know screen tear is normal if your FPS is way over your refresh rate, but I'm not getting screen tearing.

    Thanks

You can still run with vsync on even if you're not pegging your FPS at the refresh rate.  With a Gsync display, I find using vsync on the best.  It will maintain the refresh you use (if capable), yet when not, runs very smooth.  No tearing or stuttering.

You want V-sync turned off in game when you use G-sync, turning on V-sync will interfere with G-sync and basically turn it off. You can have V-sync on in the NV control panel but want it off in game for sure.

Yes, setting vsync for the each game profile in the NVCPL (vsync disabled in-game) is the way to go if you choose to use vsync.  And it works flawlessly using Gsync.  No stuttering, no tearing.  I should have been more clear in my post above.

    Running a PG278Q myself.

Same here and it's been a great monitor.  I've owned it since it first launched.

Also same.  I got it over a year ago and have had zero complaints.  Once you go GSync, you can never go back, same with 144 (120+) Hz (imho at least).
IPS will always have better color than TN, but there are some TN panels that are FAR better than other TN panels, like the one in the ROG PG278Q.
Before the ROG I had an IPS, and to me this was well worth the upgrade, 1200p to 1440p, 60Hz to 144Hz, TN has a faster gtg rate in general, now also, I really do not see the best and with someone right next to me telling me there were huge difference in the color, I couldn't see it as well, to me it was a little better, but nothing that major, and certainly not the level of difference implied, so there will definitely be some instances of YMMV for TN vs IPS.
If you have any well stocked local electronics store, go and look and see some side by side.  A year ago, Frys had the ROG Swift on the shelf as well as a Dell Ultrasharp, and I have seen similar things at Best Buy, obviously some are better stocked than others, but I think that will tell you if it is worth the extra dough, because it is all based off of how it looks TO YOU.  Personally I don't see myself buying a IPS, unless I can get some MASSIVE improvements in glasses, to me the color difference is too minuscule for 100$ or more for almost the same thing, my buddy is an artist and will not touch a TN panel, at least not for anything where color matters.  So find someplace you can see them and go from there.

My vote is my ROG Swift PG278Q, ZERO buyers remorse there.

Yeah I'll probably have to go into a store and compare.
I've always run with a TN panel and i'll be honest... I find the colors a bit washed out. Like for whatever reason whenever I watch gameplay videos on youtube the color of the explosions and fire is very vivid the colors are very vivid and pop out.
But with my TN panels they just kinda seem a bit... washed out or greyer.

I'll probably go see the IPS panel in person and see how much of a difference it makes haha, but i'll definitely probably be getting one of the ASUS ROG monitors.
I'll probably be doing a bit of photo editing in the near future, so I believe an IPS panel will help with that. For me a huge thing is color accuracy and picture quality being clear. Some people say IPS has a pretty big noticible difference, some people say there really isn't :/ I think its probably just up to the person/ monitor, so i'll take a look at one in person.

    Thanks guys :^)

It also makes a big difference using one of these  >>  https://www.amazon.com/X-Rite-CMUNDIS-ColorMunki-Display/dp/B0055MBQOM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486148040&sr=8-1&keywords=colormunki+display

That's what I use on my displays.

Yeah, for example the DELL S2716DG looks rather abysmal out of the box, colors are low saturation and gamma is way off. But once calibrated, it's a rather beautiful display.

    Thanks guys :)
I got the ASUS PG279Q, eBay had a 10% eBay bucks promotion and couldn't turn that down.... got $80 back in credit.

I heard some bad things about ASUS/ Acer quality control with the 1440P 144hz IPS panels though :/ Mainly with IPS glow/ backlight bleeding, all a matter of winning the LCD lottery haha, Glad newegg covers exchanges...
Unfortunately ASUS/ Acer/ Viewsonic all get their IPS panels made by AU Optronics so for 1440P 144hz IPS Gsync I really only have those options. (or AOC, but AOC is kinda... ehhh)
