I have X99 FTW K mobo and Samsung 960, and believe it's a BIOS issue.  When I have either/both Hitachi and/or Samsung 2TB HDD attached, even though the 960 is set as the primary boot legacy device, Win 10 will either hang or crash at boot.  If I unplug the HDDs, then the 960 NVME SSD will properly boot, and I can even hot-plug the HDDs back in.  The issue repeats every time.  BIOS 2.02.

**EDIT**
Same issue happens with ASUS X-99A II motherboad.  I'm also on 960 EVO firmware 2B7QCXE7.

I always thought it was a BIOS issue all along until F1Schu thought it might be a Samsung issue. We're waiting for his 960 SSD replacement to try again on his Classy board. Stay tuned.....

I'm interested in the outcome, since I too am having an issue with my 960 M.2 drive, only with an Asus motherboard.  The drive will not show up after a restart.  Only after a complete shutdown will it become recognized by the bios and be online again. (Not using it as a boot drive).

Maybe this Thread will help: UPDATE: X99 Classified BIOS doesn't see my M.2 SSD (fixed in post #34 and #39)

Thanks, I have been watching this thread and have responded to it a few times.

Hence my last response....."Nice work Harry! There is a little hope for the X99 boards supporting M.2 SSD's. But you still have to jump through a lot of hoops to make it work. But being insistent pays off!

I'm still waiting til the M.2 tech is more standard to motherboards, as SATA drives are."

So I had this same problem with my Asus Crosshair VI Hero X370 board and the Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD. I installed windows 10 from UEFI USB drive and then it never rebooted into windows. The problem was that I needed to change the Secure Boot setting to "Windows UEFI" as it was currently on "Other OS"

I believe I did try that. It's been awhile now. I've since returned the drive. I'm now awaiting the next generation of X boards. The X299's are not to far away. Probably Q3 this year. I'm sure by then, they'll have the bugs worked out. And M.2 drives will be more mainstream as the 2.5 SSD's are now.

Hello brockkane,

Sorry for digging up this old thread but I have similar issue with my brand new samsung evo 970 nvme ssd and found this thread on the internet.
My mainboard is ECS Z97 Machine.
At this time I cannot boot with the ssd plugged in the mainboard. The system freeze at the logo. (Before that I tried installed window 10 on that ssd but unsuccessful).
After some research I think my mainboard does not support nvme boot but I still want to make the ssd secondary storage. But now when I inserted the ssd the system freeze at logo screen. Can you tell me how to resolve this problem ?

Before I installed the window 10 on the samsung I can boot into window and the ssd is recognized as secondary storage.

Thanks in advance

I followed this guide when installing 960 Pro on my X99 FTW K and everything went perfectly.  However, the  only thing I did different was to clone my old SSD to the 960 pro...then did the setup...
