So I've seen a few threads about black screens, crashing, etc. I think the issue I'm having is different. I have an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW (with latest November 3rd video BIOS installed). On some games, when I quit them, I get a black screen instead of my desktop. Everything seems to respond properly (via the keyboard), the monitor acts like it is getting a signal (it stays turned on and doesn't say "No Signal"), sound still works, etc. The current workaround is to press Fn+Pause on my keyboard (Razer BlackWidow) to put the computer to sleep, wake it up by pressing the power button, turn the monitor off and on, and my computer is sitting at the lock screen. Log back in, and I'm good to go like nothing happened. I've tried other things like hitting Alt+Tab, Alt+F4, Ctrl+Alt+Del, etc., turning the monitor off and on, and so on. I'm running the latest NVIDIA drivers. I've had the computer for a couple of months now, but this only started in the past few days. It seems to happen fairly consistently on certain games (Braid, Dark Souls III, & Star Wars: The Old Republic for example), but never on others (I have like 80 games installed). Any suggestions please? Has anyone else seen this issue?

That was my original suspicion as well. However, I remembered that it did happen one time before I applied the BIOS update. It was during that first time that I established the workaround described above. Card is working great otherwise (before and after new BIOS). No CTDs, TDRs, artifacts, etc. using factory overclock. Thanks for checking!

Here are my suggestions... #1 Try a different display cable if you haven't already. If using a display port cable make sure the cable is vesa certified. #2 Inside the nvidia control panel under manage 3d settings, global settings, set power management mode from optimal to adaptive. Reboot PC #3 Retest for black screens.

No problem. You might want to try the other dp outputs on the card as well.

Getting exactly the same issue in here (Just started to happen recently but before bios update). Clueless to the moment as what might be. Although i have some suspicious about nvidia recently released flawled whql drivers OR Windows update packages because my system didn´t changed from a while and only new drivers were installed. Tried already 2 monster hdmi cables with same results. EVGA GTX 1080 SC ACX3.0 + latest nvidia driver + win10 64bits Birthday Update I´m seeing a lot of this issue in nvidia forum and microsoft support forum but with no answers until now.

Thanks, flaviossa. Sucks you have the issue as well, but glad I'm not the only one I guess. Found a post in the GeForce forums suggesting it is caused by G-SYNC. Do you have a G-SYNC monitor as well? I'm going to try turning that off to see if that is causing it, along with Sajin's power management suggestion.

Okay, turning off G-SYNC fixes the issue for now, which is a bummer. I've actually managed to forget how nasty screen tearing can be in some games. Here's hoping this is a temporary hiccup in the NVIDIA driver and that they get it squared away ASAP. I'm going to try and chime in on the GeForce forums as well to try and add me to the list of those affected. Hopefully, NVIDIA is taking note...

Don't know what to tell you. I've got a couple of games on here that cause the problem consistently. Other (most) games never do it at all. For the games that do it consistently, they stopped doing it when I disabled G-SYNC. As this was done at the suggestion of someone else with the same issue over in the GeForce Forums ( https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/968520/pc-games/gsync-feature-causes-black-screen-amp-pc-freeze-when-exit-some-games-/), I'm now pretty sure this isn't an isolated case (bad monitor, cable, etc.) The only thing I've noticed for the games that repeatedly cause it is that they don't have a setting in-game that allows for setting the refresh rate. Most games allow me to crank it up to 165 Hz. Do you have the game Braid on Steam? If so, try it out and see if it works fine for you. It is an older indie game, so I figure it might fly under the radar for some/most these days. On the other hand, Dark Souls III is a more popular and recent title, and it does it as well.

I don´t have gsync in here. Just a pretty ordinary ASUS 60mhz FullHd monitor (mx279) running at 1920x1080 and the black screens happens randomly with some games (Only when i exit the game). I have just made a clean nvidia driver install 375.76 and will see what happens. Will let you know if the issue is gone or is back ... fingers crossed

Interesting! Maybe we're dealing with two distinct but similar issues? Does my putting the computer to sleep trick work for you? Also, you say the issue is random for you. For me, it can happen every single time with a couple of games.

No idea. Maybe something different in demo version? Something else different between our systems that we're not accounting for? Doesn't change the fact that, in my situation, disabling G-SYNC for the affected games stops the issue for me. BTW, can add Final Fantasy XIII-2 to the list of games that do this. Yet another game where I can't specify the refresh rate in the game, so that theory still holds.

Will test Braid tonight, as i have it on Steam. One thing to note is that i´m using 1ft class games like BF1, Mad Max, Doom and in this games, i don´t see the black screen. I see much more black screens in indie games.

I think i might have had black screen triggered in dark souls 3 when messing with settings it will flash, if you set refresh rate by aplication instead it will stop giving blackscreen, if its set to force max refresh rate it will cause blackscreen. Not sure if this same issue.

I will try leaving G-SYNC on and changing the refresh rate setting in the NVIDIA Control Panel for Dark Souls III and see if it still does it. I believe the default setting for me is indeed to force max refresh rate. This makes sense when combined with my theory about the affected games not allowing for setting the refresh rate via the in-game settings. Thanks!

It can be a dp cable issue, try to find it on google with 20 pins issue... I have the same issue with 2 cards, I just bought a DP cable to try to fix it (I have this problem from 1 year). go wikipedia / display ports, and look at "problems"

Can a DisplayPort cable just "go bad" though? I'm using the one that came with the monitor. Has worked fine for about four months with two computers (and the games that are causing problems now). That's why I've been leaning towards this being more of a software/drivers/OS issue of some sort.

Yes, DP cables can have issues, even if they are "certified". But it is just a possibility to explore (if someone can lend you one... )

Tried changing the Preferred refresh rate setting to Application-controlled for each game .exe, and it also solves the problem for each. So they don't like the combination of G-SYNC and forcing a higher refresh rate. Turn either setting off, and they're all fine when quitting. Sajin Do you experience the problem using the demo version?
As I have the full version, haven't tried the demo.

I have this issue too, Maxwell GPU here. Fix ---> Go right into your GSYNC options and turn GSYNC to use during windows and full screen. This worked for me. I have found the issue to be strictly Windows 10 related. Typical issues coming from Windows 10. The problem is windows 10 keeps assuming that you have multiple monitors. It's a flaw with Windows. It constantly tries to override Nvidia's drivers and settings. Others have reported that pulling your cable out and plugging it back in has worked too. Some have also reported that running DDU, wiping your current drivers, and reinstalling the latest drivers have also fixed the problem. However, I have done this in the past, but the issue eventually comes back. So far setting GSYNC to run in windows and during full screen has suppressed the issue. The black screen only occurs on the exit of a specific game, and doesn't always happen on certain titles, right? .................... Until now, EVGA forums is the only site that suggested to have the refresh rate set to application controlled, rather than forcing max refresh rate. I'll try this as well.

good to know. I'm definitely going to try this when I get home. Thanks. Didn't mean to take over the thread, it just so happens I have been having this same issue and you're the only person on the entire net that has suggested to try setting the NVidia settings to run the refresh rate at the application's refresh rate.

arokhantos Btw i have dualscreen 1 of my screen does't have gsync attached on hdmi it also go's black when i mess with dark souls 3 settings, untill i allow refresh rate by aplication instead.
There is one problem by setting the refresh rate to application. Imported games that have a fixed refresh rate, then that's what you're stuck with. It kills the gaming experience, especially with games that run at 30fps. When you set it to run at your monitors maxed refresh rate, the game(s) will go at the fps. Otherwise the game will be locked at the application's refresh rate, and if the game was made at 30fps, it's a real buzz kill. I will attest that setting GSYNC to run in full-screen and window fixes the issue.
