I just tried to install my new EVGA GTX 1060 SC (6GB model) in my MSI Z87-G45 motherboard (). When I turn on my PC I just get a black screen, and the GTX fan doesn't even spin (even though my case and CPU fans are all spinning). I tried removing and plugging the new card back multiple times, but no go. If I switch back to my old GeForce 8800 Ultra everything works fine. Is this card not compatible with my motherboard, or does this just sound like a defective card?

Do you have the 6-pin pci-e power cable plugged into the graphics card? Are you running the latest bios for your motherboard? What motherboard do you own?

Yes, I made sure to plug the 6-pin PCI-E power cable into the graphics card -- And I know the power cable is good because it's the same one I use with my old card that works. I am using the latest BIOS update (V1.9) for my motherboard (MSI Z87-G45).

Yep, sounds like the card is defective. Try testing it in another computer to confirm.

I finally got the card to work in my PC. It turned out to be a physical connection issue. When tightening both screws on the card it was putting tension on the card in the slot. All of my other cards sit perfectly, so I think the card is a slightly out of tolerance (manufacturing issue or glitch maybe). The way you can tell there is a slight problem is that after putting the card in the slot the screw holes were slightly skewed. I was able to resolve this by only using one screw.

Welcome to the forums jmarr After installing the card, loosen all of the MB mounting screws 1/4 turn. This allows the MB & GPU to align better with your case. The case could be the root problem, btw. Don't forget to re-tighten the MB mounting screws - gently. Of course you remove the power first.

Great idea! I will give it a try.

Have you tried clearing the motherboard's CMOS to see if that allows the card to be detected? Have you tried a different PCIE power cable?
