I bought a 980 Ti Kingpin, and yes I know it draws way more power than a ref card: 1 6pin and 2 8pin connectors, *so*, I bought a 750w BQ PSU solely to power the card.  I downloaded and installed the latest web drivers and cuda drivers that were available as of yesterday (3/13/17) WebDriver-367.15.10.35f01 and CUDA 8.0.63.  Weird thing is, when I fully connect all the ports of the card to the PSU and boot up - black screen.  I use an iMac to screenshare to diagnose and the CUDA preference pain says No GPU Detected.  The fan on the PSU hasn't spun once and in fact I can't even tell if it's working unless I use the testing connector, and then the fan will spin, but *only* then.   To contrast this, I plugged in the mac's 2 6pin connectors, one to the 6pin port, and one of the 8pin ports on the kingpin, and then used a 2x15pin sata to 6pin cable run from the optical bay to plug into the remaining 8pin port leaving both 8pin ports with the leftmost 2 pins unconnected.  So 4 pins  total are still not connected I know, but when I boot under that configuration, I still get a black screen but through screenshare I see the CUDA preference pain doesn't give me the No GPU Detected warning and the system report shows an Nvidia Card connected, but with only 256mb of VRAM total (!?).  The lights on the kingpin light up and do their color dance regardless, but I'm assuming it's getting enough power to do that through the PCIE slot.  I've gone back and forth between those two power setups and I can confirm it's always the same results with the PSU vs the mac's internal power.  I take all of this to mean that perhaps the PSU is faulty and not supplying any/enough power?  Does that seem right?  I plan to return the PSU for another one but we're in the midst of a blizzard here in NY right now.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting, I will give that a shot this evening and report back, thanks!

Btw any thoughts on the 750 BQ?  That's still concerning me as it does *not* have ECO mode and therefore, the fan should always spin when it's on, right?  And like I said, it *only* spins during testing, and never any other time.

Confirm power cords are fully seated, sometimes they are tight before they are seated - latches should close if on ends

What output port have you tried on the 980 Ti ?

Yep I've read all 3 of those articles in the last 48 hours, lol, definitely the Create.Pro article as it'ss the reason I felt I could make this work in the first place. The first article suggests downloading the latest drivers, which I found through the createpro piece.  The bare feats one is from 2014 and referencing Yosemite, so... And yes, when I plugged the PSU connectors into the card they all had the clip click into place, save for the 2pin ones which don't have the clips.  I ran the hardwired 6+2 pin from the PSU to one of the 8pin ports, and then a modular cable that came with the PSU that had a 6+2pin connector (for the 2nd 8pin port, which then extended to another 6pin connector on that same cable, so I plugged that into the 6pin port. Also I also tried DVI first since that's my usual connection, but for arguments sake tried the HDMI and all 3 mDP's as well, but still black screen.  Still doesn't explain the non-ECO 750 BQ fan never spinning *shrug*, and that concerns me.  Again, when I rerouted some internal power I at *least* got the CUDA preference pane (8.0.63) to recognize the drivers and not give me the "No GPU Detected" *and* system report showed the "Nvidia Chipset" with 256mb VRAM, but that's only under internal power, and still a black screen.  None of that happens when I'm fully powering the card with the PSU.  Mind you that's the only thing the PSU is there to power, i.e. it's not being tasked with powering the mobo or cpu or anything else so I have a hard time believing a 750w PSU isn't enough to run the card, even a kingpin.  The guy at Adorama mentioned that the BQ series had been discontinued (on my way out, ahem).  Maybe this kind of issue was the reason?

If the new PSU is not connected to your MB; how are you starting the PSU ?

The "PSU = ON / Start" signal comes from the 24-pin connector

You can use the test connector and 24-pin cable to power up the PSU

    750W is plenty of power

Oh, sorry, didn't make myself clear.  The 750 is an *additional* PSU... I bought it specifically to just power the card.  The mac still has it's own psu powering everything else.

And right, the fan spins when I use the 20pin connector test thing, but that's the only time it spins... it never once has spun when I turned it on or otherwise, and like I said, after repeated times, under the 750 fully powering it, the mac doesn't even see the card, but under internal rerouted power and the 2 6pins, it at least gets detected by both the mac (but still only showing 256mb vram, wth) and nvidia's drivers (I don't pretend to expect that's enough power to actually get it running, but it's still more than the card under the 750 does, which is nothing

I got that; my question still stands

If the new PSU is not connected to your MB; how are you starting the PSU ?

    another way to say it

How are you starting the new PSU to get power to the GPU ?

The GPU will Not turn the PSU On, the correct pins on the 24-pin need the "ON" signal, usually supplied by the MB

wait, so I have to have to use the 24pin on the 750 to replace the internal psu's 24pin connection, so... that the motherboard then gives the 750 psu the "on" signal I should say, thereby powering the gpu  I mean I know I'm a newb but I thought I did a fairly good job of researching this project beforehand, yikes... originally when you asked how am I powering it, my first thought was, "um, I flip the switch on the back to on?" dense...

Though the switch on back of PSU can complete the power "supply" circuit, (supply AC power to PSU )---> it does Not turn it ---> ON = PSU is activated Outputs are On/ powered

Use the tester you mentioned in post #1

connect 24-pin cable to the New PSU and the tester/ jumper -- PSU comes "ON" ------> power to the new GPU ---> BINGO

(only use cables that came with your PSU - they are Not all the same - do not mix with the ones on your computer)

oh even better... so just keep the tester connected to the 24pin cable of the psu and that will "turn it on" and give power to the gpu... omg, ok that sounds like a major breakthrough although I will admit... during all this testing and configuring, I *did* have the gpu connected to the 750 and just out of curiosity or desperation, I plugged the tester thing in because I still hadn't seen the fan on the psu ever move sans the testing itself, and the fans on the kingpin freaked out and went full max so I freaked and pulled the test connector back out... ever had that happen?  Plus nowhere in the manual for the psu did it say what you just told me, which... seems pretty vital...

Until in OS the GPU may run fans on high --- keep clear

The power switch on the back of PSU can be a start/ stop but your switching under power best to just swap PSU and wire/ cables

You can change the new PSU for the old psu after your test, if it fits your Mac.  -- I do not know what the inside of a Mac looks like

If the power wires are the same type and the new PSU will fit in the case - just change it over -- After removing all power, allow a couple min. for the PSU capacitors to discharge first.

    Play it safe -
    take some pictures first
remove power cord, PSU can have some power to MB even if computer is "off"
ground strap or at least make contact with the case first

oh there's no way that beast is going to fit inside the psu space in a mac tower, and I don't mind it sitting on top of the case or whatever, but I'll test it a little later but again, the part about the 24pin tester thing making the gpu fans go full bore, shouldn't I be concerned about that? Or perhaps if I *did* run the 750's 24pin connector to the mobo that would possibly alleviate it?  I'll see if it happens again when I retry all this but thanks so far, first time on an nvidia card and all...

Any PSU needs the signal to turn the outputs "On"   So no, you can not just disconnect your case mounted PSU's 24-pin - or - it will not start

Google something like "starting dual psu" and see what comes up

I didn't mean just disconnecting the case-mounted psu 24-pin,  I meant replacing it with the 750's 24pin and then maybe the fans wouldn't go crazy but I see what you mean about the OS side being involved in some way

The firmware on the GPU may have a state when on run fans full until ........

My PC experience - I've seen some graphics cards run fans till the computer advanced its POST sequence (power on self test = POST)

Somewhere the graphics card fan control is handed to the OS from the firmware

You can use something like this: (just an example not a recommendation for this specific product)

     Modmymods

Phobya 24Pin Dual PSU Adapter Cable | Black (87470)

2-wire side to second PSU for start signal -------> right side in photo, place inline with MB PSU 24-pin cable - Primary PSU connected to MB

I see... interesting indeed... ok I need to see if I have a way to snake those out of the case psu compartment, it's pretty closed off but I'll see if there's on mod for *that* as well, lol

actually forget what I just said, that made no sense, I hadn't understood what you were saying the first go around, d'oh

Success!  plug in the test clip, turned on the psu and then booted the mac, and it all worked perfectly.  Thank you so much Cool!  As for the fans blazing... that was because I already had the computer booted up, card connected to the psu that was "switched" on... and then I connected the test plug - big mistake.  But as soon as I did things in the right order, i.e. test clip plugged in, psu on, and then mac on, it worked as expected.  Thanks again!  Now as long as it stays stable, lol, too early to tell.

At the 2 minute mark this video shows how to turn the ATX power supply to be always on and mowable use the on/off switch in the back just by using a simple jumper wire on the ATX 24 pin connector.
He is also placing a CUDA card in a mac.

Well, I may have spoke too soon. It works, for about 5 mins then I get a kernal
panic and it reboots itself... did this 3 times in a row over the course of a few minutes until it wouldn't give any video at all... thought it wasn't booting up so I put my old amd 5780 back in and yes, it's booting with that card but I don't yet know what's causing the panics... I have all 3 reports from that incident, is anyone here able to decipher such things? sooo close!
