My external hard drive has stopped working. The disc is no longer readable . When I connect the disc to my computer, the system asks me to format it. There are very important files on the disc. Does anyone know how to help me? edit by Cool GTX added Solved to title

Welcome to the EVGA forums & Congrats on your first thread We would need details on your hardware & OS. What does it say in Windows Disk Management? Have you tried to fix by using ---> run the CHKDSK command How old is the drive, brand, model number, size ......? Is it a Mechanical (spinner) HD or SSD? How is it connected to PC? (cable type/ port) Anything happen to the drive? (It was format by mistake, Virus, other malware, drop, spill, worked fine X days ago & today nada) Have you looked for tools from the drive Mfg? Have you replaced all connecting cables & tried different ports &/or Computers? There are tools, the free ones have, though they have limits. Linux tools can help. Service companies charge large fees, but broken drives can be read - just depend how bad you need the information. Is the external hard drive in an enclosure to connect an internal drive externally? Then it would take knowing if it's an HDD or an SSD. It very likely would be something that could mostly be recovered but it would take being sent in for data recovery. It would be best to see if the brand that makes the hard drive offers that as a service and the cost.

Hello! I have Windows 10. It is a Western Digital 320 gb HDD The disc is about 8 years old. The disc was connected via usb, but I took it out of the box and connected it directly to the PC via SATA interface. The disc was working fine, I did not do any procedures with it. It just stopped working... Service is a very expensive procedure for me.

For posting images on the forums you need a few more posts first. If you host the pictures on a website like imgur for example just post the URL with some spaces in between the address so it isn't blocked.

Found an old WD passport, where can I find the needed software drivers ...
Windows 10 does not recognize older USB External Hard drive in Device ... Last idea, if it worked before when you bought the drive, find an old PC with that operating system - like Windows 7 or whatever you used before W10 to save those files. Just make sure you update the antivirus software on the old PC - First, before you plug in your external drive

I'm sorry, but the program does not see the disc. But I managed to make a copy of the disc using Clonezilla. Now I can try other programs.

I tried to scan the disc for free with PhotoRec, the program found about 30% of my files... This is something, but not enough. I'm looking for more.

I did manage to solve this problem. First, I managed to make a copy of the damaged drive using Clonezilla. I came across this video tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0L2vCS-dV-MTrue, it cost me $97.95, but that's nothing compared to taking the disc to a technician. I risked losing my files forever. But I can't afford to pay a lot of money. Let me tell you a little bit about how I did it. I downloaded Hetman Partition Recovery , the program displayed my RAW drive, which used to be FAT, and started a full scan. It found most of my files and successfully recovered them. Yes, it couldn't recover all the files, but I was lucky: I recovered the most important ones . And yes, make copies of important files (discs) for the future. Also, thanks to everyone who tried to help me)

Great Good to see you found a solution that was reasonable in cost to salvage most of your files added Solved to title

Good to hear you were able to get the files saved since I know sending the drive in to be recovered doesn't always work and costs a ton of money. It's worth it if the files are really important but it's always nice when troubleshooting saves that cost. It's also good to make sure that two copies of really important files exist.
