Its not a very good system. Even if you win you have to checkout immediately or it will be out of stock by the time you try to buy. They have also raised the price in the cart for some people.

I have "won" once since it started and i was booted out of checkout because of limited supply.

I believe we are now in a new era for scalping. Scalpers in the future will buy up all inventory and try to corner the market, only let cards dribble out at high prices. Interest rates are low so no cost to carry inventory. Sorta like computer OPEC.

eBay's earnings from Q4 indicate exactly this.

I really don't think so. I looked up the earnings per share for ebay and it was exactly the same for Q3 and Q4. I am not a stock market expert however and I might be misinterpreting data.

Respectfully, you are incorrect.  I don't know ebays earnings, but any search on scalpers earnings are in the 100s of millions.  It's a scourge.

Newegg is basically scalping those MSI cards - they should be at least $100 less both.  I didn't enter for them, but I did put in for the 5950x & 5600x... since the 5800x seems to be a CPU literally no one wants because of it's odd price, didn't put in for that one today.
Good luck to others in the shuffle & congrats to those that got card emails today!

I scored a 5800x on launch day because it was the odd duck and everyone was piling on one of the others and I was able to get an order through.  Been using it ever since and am very happy.  It wants to run hotter so you need a good cooler and possibly a tiny bit of bios tweaking depending on your cooling situation.  I don't regret the purchase.

Yes, the 5800X is overpriced because of how AMD dies work, the 5800x is basically a single die equivalent of the 5950x, which is why it's higher priced than it should be, every individual CPU die on it has to be of adequate quality to be useable, whereas both the 5900x & 5600x have "dead/bad" dies on them and are thereby higher yield.
Eventually they'll lower the price, once supply/demand settles down.

No, they won't, and I will tell you why. Because the manufacturers won't let them. Allowing that to happen is a great way to alienate a large number of potential customers. There is no benefit in it for the manufacturer short of taking kickbacks, and if they were going to do that why not just raise their prices instead, right? What you are suggesting makes zero sense. Nobody wants a middleman who does nothing but vampire your money.

Wow.  Lots and lots of understandable angst on these forums. Here are few thoughts:

1.  These are unprecedented times in all our lives.  Many thousands of persons have died, and countless millions have been adversely affected by a pandemic of epic proportions.  Supply chains and entire economies across the world are struggling to meet the demands of our "new normal."  Please try to keep some perspective on the sheer vastness of this problem.  It's not just PC parts - it's almost everything!

2.  The electronic age is fully upon us, with lightning fast communications and data transfers.  No one waits for anything anymore, really.  But with that comes an artificial sense of supply, demand, and need.  Plus, "value" is something that we define for ourselves.  For example, in days gone by, "value" came in form of say, food, for a service rendered; then economies were built on a monetary concept against a "valuable," typically rare commodity (think gold).  Now we have cybercurrency, which has no basis in anything valuable other than what someone is willing to trade for it.  Amazing and mind-numbing at the same time.

3.  Like most of you, I hate scalpers - defined by me as those individuals who intentionally try to prey on the needs of others (real or perceived).    Scalping has almost become a profession for these unsavory people.  Taking advantage of others is just wrong.  But it is everywhere - I'm sure there are scalpers lurking among us on this very site (and I'm sure they are registered in the queues).  Heck, I just read an article where scalpers are buying up Pokemon cards at McDonalds to re-sell for ridiculous prices.  Not cool.  Can't do much about it, except not buy from them.

4.  Remember that eBay is an auction site - they take a cut of whatever people are willing to spent for others' goods.  The final selling price for ANY item on eBay represents what others perceive the "value" to be.  So, don't get mad at eBay, EVGA, or anyone else for this scalping situation...be mad at the scalpers who are simply taking advantage of bad situation.  AND...don't buy from them.  Doing so simply propagates the problem; everyone who bids up an item on eBay becomes part of the problem...think about that for a moment.

5.  In our case, the heart of the issue is the limited supply of physical GPUs and the various PCB components.  Believe me, every company is selling these GPUs as quickly as they can make them.  And if they could make them faster, they would.  But they can't.  The supply is at a trickle, as we've seen on these forums with the queues, and in the "real world" with retail shortages.  Asus, EVGA, MSI, whoever can only sell what they produce.  Remember that if no one bought these cards, even the MSRPs would eventually go down.  This situation will not improve until the market becomes saturated with products to the extent that it starts to limit the overall demand - there are no other "controls" that will help.  At least the EVGA queue gives you a guaranteed opportunity to make a purchase when stock becomes available.  Another huge factor here is the crypto-miners, as they suck up cards at a ridiculous rate for their very wasteful (overall) get-rich-quick, money-for-nothing scheme.  Too bad you can't use something no one cares about for crypto-mining (think dog poop, maybe) - that would be awesome!

In the end, there isn't much we can do except be patient and stay civil.  For what it is worth, a GPU is just a thing, and eventually we will all get one.  In the meantime, we can share our tales and keep each other's spirits up!  Better days are yet to come, so hang in there, friends!  Good luck going forward!

Thanks again to enewt and others for all the hard work to keep the forum lively, informed and fun!  Stay safe!

Regards,

Well said!

Even the f150 plant by my house is now down to 1 shift from 3 for the next month due ti chip shortages. GM is in a similar idling I've heard.

It's affecting all aspects for sure.

This. People need to understand that with demand really high, supply should catch up, but they simply can't because of supply chain limitations. If you think EVGA or any of the other manufacturers of GPUs and CPUs are intentionally limiting their products in order to inflate price, then it goes against them, because they're not getting any of that inflated price.

Units sold will always look prettier on paper compared to how much your overall profits are. It's why Microsoft and Sony sell their consoles at a loss and make up the profits from the services they offer for the console, such as subscriptions, and fees for developers to have their game on their platforms.

As good as it is, one of the things that is so frustrating to everyone is all the "unknowns" with the queue system, right?  Think about all the things we don't know:
  • We don't know how many people are in the queues.
  • We don't know how many people are ahead of us.
  • We don't know how many cards are allocated to the queues.
  • We don't know how many cards are coming or when they will arrive.
  • We don't know how many people get notifies and then don't make a purchase.
  • We don't know how many people get notifies and do make a purchase (unless they self-report it).
  • We don't know how many queue purchases end up directly on eBay.
  • The list goes on and on...
That is why it is sooo amazing that folks like enewt are able to literally stitch together little bits and pieces of information to at least provide some meaningful insight.  A fantastic effort to at least help give us an idea of when we might get our chance to make a purchase.  It's a tiny glimmer of hope they provide.  So, thanks!

What would be helpful would be if EVGA could share some basic queue information aside from which products are being released to the queue on any given day.  I mean, let's face it, they know exactly who is in the queue and what position they occupy (after all, it's their queue system!).

Clearly, they won't share that level of granularity for fear of their customer service group getting overrun with calls, but I'm sure they could share some meaningful information to help us out.  For example, "as of this Friday, we have xxxx people in the SKU 3xxx queue, and to date, we've sold cards to yyyy of them." Not so specific that people could nit-pick the data, but at least something to show how things are progressing.  That would be very cool, indeed.

Same frustration here.
Tired of hearing "Unprecedented Times".
I'd rather hear that nVidia is crushing and delivering hundreds of thousands of chips.
How many 3080 boards have been delivered since 9/17/2020?
Basically, they're sitting on a gold mine, and all they have to do is churn out these things to get money.
Unfortunately, the damned scalpers (who were scalping before these so-called "Unprecedented Times") seem to have a higher profit margin than either nVidia, individual card makers, or even the resellers.

It's gotta happen sometime--at some point, nVidia's going to release so many cards, it shuts down the scalpers.

what does it mean when my cart on newegg says,
Sorry. One or more items have been removed from your cart due to availability/stock insufficiency...
Does this mean I won and missed chance at shuffle, or I didnt get it and this shows up as a result?

If you have the newegg app, they will notify you via the app and email.

I've won twice, and for sure you will get an email stating you have been selected.

Scalping has almost become a profession for these unsavory people.

Oh, it is a profession. Concert tickets is their usual cash cow, but since that's not happening they are looking for other ways to siphon money from people. They use bots to buy up prime campsites on Reserve America and they sell the reservations. They buy up limited edition, and other popular toys and scalp them in the months leading up to Xmas. They camp out at Gamestop so they can get one of the two PS5's that the store has in stock. Someone just mentioned the McDonalds scam. GPU's have obviously caught their attention as well. Talk about an unproductive job, and by that I mean unproductive to society. That's why I think scalping should be illegal, but try telling that to US politicians. They can't hear you from those court side NBA seats that they didn't pay for. This isn't new and it has been dragged in front of Congress before. There just isn't any political will to do anything about it. Scalping has been going on since the 1950's. Elvis Presley unwittingly started the whole thing. It took a while for it to really catch on, but by the late 1960's it was prevalent in sports, theater, and music.

Sorry to get off topic for a moment. But, yes, there is a tie-in with the queue. There are scalpers among us here and there are scalpers laced all through the queue. They are hoping just like us that they will get their card ASAP, albeit for a different reason. Because of them, the rest of us will have to wait longer to get our card at cost. And that's fine. I would rather wait. If people would stop giving scalpers oxygen they would go away in a short period of time. It's that simple, really.

I so enjoyed that game.  I was able to play a little bit of the Back 4 Blood beta in December...it looks like a good spiritual successor.  Looking forward to its release in May or June...I wonder if I will have my card by then...(gulp).

Have we gotten any indication of how long the delay on the HCs is going to be now, or is it still "Maybe soon, maybe April LUL" is the most information we have?
