For anybody who cares, Epic's main expert witness is currently undergoing cross examination by Apple's counsel.  It's dry testimony, but fascinating.  All the participants are wearing masks in court so the audio is a bit muffled, but here is the feed if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAo2KpZqCRs

I have no interest in mining, and if I’m brutally honest I don’t care the least bit in what happens to miners, miners/gamers if/when these LHR cards become available.

However, I can’t help but wonder what kind of a gaming performance loss these changes will come with.

Zero performance loss for gaming... from what I know. Otherwise the point of limiting hash rates would be self-defeating as it would disincentivize gamers too.

Limiting hash rate also affects password cracking, F@Home, etc. it’s a terrible thing to do

Last night I was wondering how folding would be affected.  There's going to need to be quite a bit of intelligence in the algorithm detection to not falsely limit not-mining workloads.  If it does nerf F@Home that's pretty bad, as folding is people donating computing power and electricity for the betterment of humanity.  For those who don't know this goes to scientific research for things like cancer and Alzheimer's, among others.  Would be *very* bad optics if this happens.

What is your speculation on how this is going to pan out? I'm not in a situation where I can watch it right now.

Bit of good news. No 3080/90 notifs my way, and I imagine I'm still quite far out, but with the LTT discount and your associate code, I snagged a KILLER deal on that audio card bundle. For $129 including tax and shipping, it's hard to beat for a professional grade 5.1 audio playback system. I have a new SSD that means I won't need my PCIE m.2 adapter anymore, so that frees up two PCIE slots for the EVGA sound card duo! I just wish it wasn't red. It won't match anything else in my build.

Current Temp Rig: Modded cheapo HP SFF gaming PC with AMD Ryzen 3600 + Arctic Freezer 7X, 32GB Crucial DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, incoming EVGA 3060 12GB. 400w HP Platinum PSU, 43" Asus XG438Q Gaming Monitor

Congratulations!  Thanks for the consideration re using the Associate’s Code; it is appreciated.

Professional 5.1 is no joke and I may need to consider it...once I get my rig stood up...(argh!)....

Enjoy!

Regarding the trial, Epic will not secure all the relief that they are seeking. They might (less than 50% likelihood in my estimation) secure a direction from the court that Apple cannot prohibit in-app messaging regarding alternative purchase opportunities (e.g., allow developers to state in app -- which Apple currently prohibits -- that the user could go to a website via a browser and purchase the in-game currently (either at a lower price or so as to provide greater margin to the developer). Regardless of who wins at the trial court level, the other side will appeal. This is going to be a long, drawn-out process. We are in the bottom of the second inning in this controversy.

I don't think there has been enough testing done to prove its doesn't effect any games.
The purpose of the limiter is to prevent oversupply of secondhand gpu sales down the road. They could care less about getting gamers cards.

Well, we all must wait for the reviews to come out then...

I got one of those and didn't love it, but I gave it to my son and he loves the heck out of it! It's a very well-built mouse, and the response is extremely accurate. The sniper button is genius. There were a couple of button placement issues that were specific to my mousing habits and hand shape, but if you don't experience these issues, this can be a fantastic mouse. Especially for that price!

You're probably right! I guess I can kind of see where both sides are coming from. My knee-jerk reaction is usually against Apple's pure greed and control, but of course Epic is in this for money, too. It's always about money these days.

You're probably right! I guess I can kind of see where both sides are coming from. My knee-jerk reaction is usually against Apple's pure greed and control, but of course Epic is in this for money, too. It's always about money these days.

I have professional and personal connections to both companies. I use iOS products (I have used Android products in the past, but I would consider my use de minimis and brief). I own Apple stock. In my opinion the switching costs of leaving the iOS ecosystem is so severe that I do not have an alternative to remaining with Apple devices. There is no question in my mind that Apple has -- and is exercising -- monopoly power within the iOS ecosystem as it pertains to payment processing and locking down the content app store. I say that as a consumer, as somebody that has worked within an applicable industry, and as somebody that knows a little something about antitrust law.

But proving it in court in Apple's backyard (the trial is in Oakland, CA) under time pressure, against the finest trial counsel money can buy is extremely difficult. I also think that Epic went about it in a bit of a ham-fisted way.

If I am a betting man, the breakthrough regarding freeing the storefront will come from EU regulators.

In your opinion why is switching from IOS to android more costly than switching from android to IOS? In regards of payment processing and the content on the storefront I think the argument is a little disingenuous. There is a significant stress of the security inside the Apple ecosystem. You know you are buying into a closed ecosystem and this is a major selling point for a lot of people. I think forcing them to open it up takes away a customers choice to exist in a closed system. If you want an open system then you should make the switch to android, if enough people do the pressure of the market will force Apple to course correct.

For true closed ecosystem Apple have to develop all software by themselves. As soon as they gave other developers ability to develop software for their system - it is not "closed ecosystem" anymore.

I didn't say that going from IOS to Android is more costly than Android to IOS.  I said that given that I started with IOS, it is not practicable for me to change to Android at this point (and I would argue it hasn't been practicable since about 2010 for me). And I am not sure I understand your point. If you want to stay within a close ecosystem on your specific devices you can continue to do that. Only buy through the Apple storefront. Only use the Apple payment system.

And the security argument -- as it pertains to the storefront and processing payments in particular -- is a red herring. You can still have the same level of content security but allow payments to be processed by Paypal, etc. What you are speaking to is the certification process. And they are not inextricably connected -- despite what Apple repeatedly argues publicly (see the testimony from last Tuesday and Wednesday among other sources).

Don't get me wrong -- I am a huge Apple fanboi...but on this issue, they are a monopolist and are harming consumers (and developers...who are also consumers of Apple services).

Jacob just said that there probably won't be any 3898/3898 (3080 hybrids) drops this week, but Kingpin might

Where did you see this?

It was on their Tech Tuesdays twitch stream.  I was the one who asked about it (my closest notifies are the 3888/3898) and he answered it around the 44-45 min mark.

At least this sounds like they plan on making more...  But who knows.  I am waiting for the hybrids to completely dry up like some of the other skus.

My point is if the cost of converting to either ecosystem is the same then that argument is irrelevant. My argument isn’t that a new payment method would harm security but giving access to making separate storefronts certainly would. I’m fairly versed in dealing with these things in a slightly different context but the core tools used to develop this storefront would have to have pretty fine grain access, especially if it were to have any chance to run as well as apples. This is would be a huge security hurdle and is why most open source platforms are not as secure. I would also push back consumers like the one marketplace that is regulated by Apple and is something they are very willing to engage with and is even considered a bonus to going with Apple. If Apple is compelled to allow anyone to make a marketplace then I expect every console needs to allow people to develop new marketplaces as well.

Tldr: new payments methods not bad (if paying with Apple is still a choice for the customer who wants to), new storefronts bad imo, the cost of converting is a non factor as it’s consistent throughout the industry.

What’s wrong with the queue? Nothing has been dropping since a couple days ago, and the 3897 hasn’t dropped since last week.

It would be great to see a 3898 drop this week, but that would buck the trend of drops only happening once every 4-6 weeks. Can't let that happen, right? So, if anyone else here is hoping for a hybrid drop this week, next week through the end of the month looks more likely.

I'd like to see the 3898 queue move 0:03:18 this week and/or for the 3989 queue to move 0:00:16.  :)

Best of Luck.

My guess is...  EVGA has a bunch of contracts to fill first.  Then they have their own cards to split between step-up, queue, LTT, and wherever else they choose to send them.  I am pretty sure Tuesday is Queuesday because that's the day they know the stock they have able to fulfill queues most weeks.  Shipping delays or TBD stuff might make that vary,  but the rest of the days are odds/ends.  I would expect 1 day per week to be a "decent" queue day and the rest to be sad.

Also many researchers use the GPU for math crunching as well.

Time will tell.

As much as I like LTT and EVGA, I am a little bummed that they prioritized sending him a pile of cards over folks in the queue that have been waiting since last year for their chance to buy.

I've never seen PC gaming parts being sold like this. Like people literally lining up to pay at or above MSRP for every single sku you can make. It's just unprecedented. Some people were hopeful that these stock issues would be resolved by spring or summer of this year. I had my doubts about spring, and I still have my doubts about summer as well.

Even if mining suddenly becomes nonexistent, there's still the scalper problem. The giant mining operations will simply scalp their own cards onto ebay or another sales front. I think prices will get better, but I don't expect the scalping to stop. I don't know how we can stop it as long as buyers keep showing a willingness to pay Amazon's third party scalper prices, or keep bidding ebay items up so high. Preventing mining or a total crypto market crash would only be the weakest of bandaids to the current gaming market of GPUs.
