OK I just got off the phone with them. They saw 30 EVGA cards there. They don’t know why it is reporting only eight. They still have stock also. I’m trying to get this stupid concrete job done so I can get up there and grab one. If I get one I will sell it to one of you for cost. I’m just going to be happy with my 1080 TI until one of my notifications come up. My case isn’t exactly ready yet. I am redoing all of my water cooling I have the Thermaltake Core X5 it’s a monstrous case and I want to add a whole lot more water cooling to it. And I see them because I don’t want anyone to know if it’s a he or she working there I do not want them in trouble. But they said there is still about 12

Good luck.  Just got back from there.  It's all MSI 3070.

I don't live anywhere remotely near a microcenter, but I am close to one right now for training. I checked, and they STILL have 3090s and 3070s in stock, several hours after the store's opening. Why?

Was it a location in a smaller community like Columbus? I wouldn't be surprised if stores in less traveled parts of the country are keeping cards in stock longer. A buddy of mine has been trying to get a card at the Tustin store for several weeks and keeps coming up empty. Every time he shows up there is either a big line, or no cards. Not surprising since that store serves the entire LA basin.

Nope. Dallas. From what I understand there's always a line, but everybody I talked to is ticked off at MSI right now. They got a big shipment of 3060ti's on Monday. One guy I got to talking with said he got the last 3060ti voucher, and sadly it was an MSI, so $600. The Gigabyte 3060ti's they also received were only $500, for reference. So the folks that got there early enough got a gigabyte voucher. I gave him my sympathies for having to pay such a huge markup, but he said that he has no choice. He needs it for some rendering and design projects he's working on, and he's gotta have a graphics card for it.

There were people buying the 3060ti's, sure, and they were gone before I got in line, which was well before opening hours, but people weren't happy about the "MSI tax". I know everyone had to increase prices for the tariffs, but MSI went coocoo for cocoa puffs on their pricing. Makes me sad, because they used to be a good company. My main rig has the MSI Prestige Creation X570 motherboard in it, and absolutely nothing in that price range even comes close to the power and function and overall awesomeness of that motherboard. The similarly-named and priced ASRock Creator X570 simply pales in comparison.

Think of the first number being generation, second for model step aka 90 80 70 70 etc
3rd I believe is a mix of bin of that specific die and power delivery on card, ie 3x 8 pin power and high bin for a 3898 or 2x 8 pin and one step down in bin for 3888
4th number directly correlates to the cooling of the card like the ftw3 ultra is always a 7 hybrid 8 hc 9 and there is the ftw3 gaming which is lower clocked from ultra, xc3 cards which have the 2x 8 pin plugs

To clarify, you're wrong that you don't deserve a statue, as another forum member mentioned many pages ago. I'm just getting around to tossing my two cents in on his comment. I think I'd like to do a little research on how to make such a statue for you ... but where would we place it? I think it would look nice at EVGA headquarters.

So today Newegg had its shuffle and even though I have yet to get any satisfaction from the one they screwed up I still entered.

I picked the worst thing to pick as I figured it would not sell out and I figured they would pick me.

So I just purchased an evga combo one of the items is the xr1

https://www.newegg.com/evga-141-u1-cb10-lr-usb-3-0-type-c/p/N82E16815101013?

the other is the
3070  3755
https://www.newegg.com/evga-geforce-rtx-3070-08g-p5-3755-kr/p/N82E16814487530?

So I am about to read  Jacob's review of the xr1

https://www.evga.com/articles/01418/evga-xr1-capture-device

https://forums.evga.com/EVGA-XR1-Overview-and-Review-m3098293.aspx

at least I have a decent card for one of the builds I need to crank out.

Maybe I can figure out a use for the xr1.

As far as the sku is concerned, the third number might be clock target tier so to speak, meaning 9 is highest possible clock target with each level down being less capable of holding high clocks 😒🤔

Well this will be my card in my build.
As a 3070 is more than I need. and maybe I do the step up for it.
The 3090 will go in the build for my wife's friend.

I thought I could get the 3060ti by April as my times were 930 am but they don't move and 2 hours may as well be 2 years.

BTW mining eth now pay 10.5 cents an mh up from the 8 cents it was the other day.

so a 3080 does about 10 bucks a day - the power.
a 3070 does about 7 bucks a day - the power.

If these mining payments stay like this getting a card after April cutoff will still be a good deal.  There is no end in sight for the shortage.

I am supposed to build around five rigs for people I don't think I can do it.

For those getting 3090s, I present to you, adding heatsinks to help keep the back of the card happy, phase 1:

This was waaaaaaaay more trouble than it looks like it shoulda been and not as much coverage as I was hoping to get out of the kit I bought, but... for those looking at 3090s specifically, I'd definitely recommend looking in to getting some heatsinks for the back of the card if you can.
I have my card vertically mounted now, with a fan blowing on those lil' heatsinks, just ran a PR run to compare temps stock vs stock to an old run I did when I got the card: Mem1 & Mem2 are 4-6C cooler than the old run, and most of the other temps are 1-2C cooler across the board.
I'm definitely going to be picking up another thing of heatsinks to put some over the VRM areas on the back of the card.
The ones in the picture are applied via thermal tape, by the by.  The whole kit, small as it was, only cost $11, so definitely worth it for that temperature reduction!

Re: New EVGA.com Notification Checkout Process 2021/02/03 16:27:51 (permalink)
I could use some advice.

I am building a new computer to replace my 5 year old machine. I have all the parts, except the CPU and GPU. I'm on the EVGA list for a 3060TI or a 3070, but it doesn't look like I'm going to get one soon unless the volume of the drops increases or a retailer gets some in stock.

I wanted to get an AMD 5900x for my CPU but they are as scarce as the Nvidia 3000 series GPUs.

Today, Newegg had a scramble. I signed up for a 5900x and a 5800x. I did not get a 5900x, but DID get the option to buy a 5800x at MSRP. I need to buy before 7 PT if I want it.

Question: Should I buy the 5800x or wait and hope for a 5900x? I'd grab the 5800x if I already had the GPU, but it is a harder decision when I can't finish the computer either way.

Does anyone here have any info on the relative performance of the 5800x and 5900x? I'm not a gamer. I do legal work and maintain a couple of websites. None of the programs I use are terribly CPU intensive, but I normally work with several programs at once: Firefox, Acrobat, Photoshop, Bridge, Dreamweaver, Outlook, Word, Excel, and Quicken.

Any thoughts?

I would say go for the 5800x in your shoes.  If you're not doing CPU-based rendering a lot, you're not going to notice much difference between a 5800x & 5900x.
You can always upgrade later if you feel the need to, but I think the 5800x will serve you well enough.

I have a 3800 and a 3900

you only need a 3900 for rendering and photo editing

buy that 5800 before it is gone.

Haha.  I remember doing this on a Radeon 9500 pro like 20 years ago (for the memory).  That card was a piece of crap!  I also put on a Zalman heatsink for the chip.

Thanks for the advice, Dabadger84. I don't do a lot of rendering, but I'd certainly be using the GPU for that as much as possible.

I have never upgraded my machines (except to add memory or storage). Normally, I build a new one every 5 years or so and give the old one to a friend for whom it is an upgrade over what he or she has. My current machine has an i7-6700K and a GTX 970. Either a 5900x or a 5800x, and either a 3060 TI or a 3070, should be a substantial upgrade.

Could you post the link of where you got those?

Out of everything you run, looks like photoshop will benefit the most from the extra cores on the 5800X. Unless you are extreme, the 5800X should be more than sufficient and future proof for the work it sounds like you'll be doing on it. Another option to consider, if you're near a Microcenter, is the 5600X. They are a much better value than the 5800X, performance per dollar-wise, and then you'd have $150 to spend towards something else (the extra MSRP hikes on 3000 series GPUs, for example).

Just a thought! The 5600X is a rather monstrous CPU for a mere $300. It is also incredibly efficient and will generate very little heat relative to the other CPUs, and also consume low power. The 5900X definitely should have some fairly robust cooling. The 5800X lies in between the 5600 and 5900, of course.

Some benchmarks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdCrQgVcO4I
(keep in mind, the graphs are somewhat skewed to make performance differences appear greater than they really are. Any of those CPUs is going to be quite a bit faster than previous gens, unless you had at least a 3900X)

More in-depth info and comparisons:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/16214/amd-zen-3-ryzen-deep-dive-review-5950x-5900x-5800x-and-5700x-tested
I found it highly perplexing that they didn't include Photoshop tests, unless I missed them, because they generally do!

Anyways, Good luck making the decision! We're here for you if you have any additional questions.

Just saw this post with the CPU you currently have. Even if you "only" upgrade to the 5600X, you're looking at extreme performance gains in every metric over your current i7, all while using power much more efficiently.

Thanks for the update. Bummer about MSI. I like MSI MB's, but I stay away from the GPU's. I have used MSI MB's in past builds and have never regretted it. Current MB is an ASUS though.

On the other hand, I only went away from EVGA once with a GPU. I can't remember exactly why, but I bought a MSI GPU one time. It was hot and loud and I ditched it after about a year.
