Know who was gone by 6:01AM? Bots and scalpers. Know who was browsing the site organically and stumbling upon a launch edition sku nobody knew about? Actual customers.
I love it.
I thought of it the same way. EVGA and other companies know people are snooping around and looking for web pages and URLs and SKUs that are going to be put up before they're actually up.
Throwing in a random/unknown Launch Day SKU helped to combat that on some level. It is a double-edged sword though in that some/many legitimate customers were sitting there waiting to try their luck but that's just how it goes sometimes. Can't make everyone happy. But it shows they are trying to do something to combat the bots.
I had a similar thought. But I would assume that the bot tech would just reverse engineer what the 3070 page address should look like and then go on autopilot waiting for it to populate. The only surprise the bots may have had would be a "launch day" edition that they were not expecting. I don't think it would have made a material difference re bot mitigation to launch at 6:00 or 6:05 am. My understanding is that it is more about surprising with the unique launch day sku web page address. Anybody have a different take?

It would have been a good idea if it had gone up first, or at the very least, at the same time as the other SKU's. Holding it for 5 minutes means that a huge amount of normal customers who prioritized EVGA over other retailers got burned. The people who first tried their luck elsewhere were able to stroll into EVGA at 6:10 (or even later) and secure their spot on the list ahead of all the most loyal EVGA fans who were here right at 6:00. Just a huge screw-up by EVGA, frankly.

We have heard the term "bigger drop" used before and if previous "bigger drops" are any indication I wouldn't expect the line to move more than 10-20 minutes, but I hope I am wrong.

As the planet enters phase 2 of the covid pandemic, it is my understanding that most companies including this one decided to not wait but instead make an insta-money grab by simply selling stock to bots without the added fuss of bothering with other region/country markets etc.
Sorry but I think we are done with the cheap excuses after what happened with the 3070 launch also. Just a money grab. You might as well not even launch just make the scalpers your intermediaries. Pathetic.

I'm not going to post some crazy exaggerated rant. but the "Launch Day" sku not even showing up until around 6:05 was disappointing. Myself and many other legitimate buyers joined various queues in those first 3-4 minutes.
Particularly for those of us in the normal Black queue, I hope that EVGA reconsiders and does something for us. Extending the launch day $30 discount on the XC3 Black would be nice gesture for those people who were in the queue before the Launch Day SKU opened (even if we miss out on the Tshirt and getting to buy the card in the first few days).

I hope EVGA goes to a signup system where you sign up ahead of a launch and are emailed to buy one like they have been doing with the 3080 restock now. It makes so much more sense to do it that way. I think Nvidia has tied their hands on how and when they can launch though. Scalping is going to always be a problem. If they hadn't started reserving cards for people on the auto-notify and doing it in order I'd still be without a card I'm sure and I have been waiting since the second the 3080s was released. I was sitting on the website ready to go and was just trying to get the page to load for an hour. I hope all future launches and restocks are done that way. At least EVGA is trying. I don't think anyone else is trying. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I wonder if the 3070 managed to pull enough people out of the 3080 queue to make a dent, or if they are just two different markets.
It will for me. I'll take whichever I can buy first.
That's where I am on the 3080 vs 6800XT. I want something to push my Reverb in VR and either of those will get the job done.

I got on the notify for the launch edition. I prioritized buying from EVGA. I'm not a scalper. I did not use a bot.
Thank you EVGA for being one of the few (only?) companies to actively work towards getting cards to legit customers.

Yeah, FTW3 seems to remain the best bet although things have been moving slowly enough today that the last couple reports were plausibly trickle from the prior drop. I know it doesn't sound like much, but if we can at least crack 8:50 I'll be doing backflips. My hopes lie more in the logjam clearing than anything else and the notion that each 9/17 hour will progress quicker than the last.

It's pretty bad. I was hoping for a lot this week. It's harder to keep track now that the spreadsheet for the 3090 FTW is completely gone too. Of course, the only one I cared about.
