CPU: i7 990x Motherboard: Previously MSI X58A-GD65 Ram: 3x Corsair 4gb CMP12GX3M3A1600C9 3x Corsair 4gb CMP16GX3M4A1333C9 This computer was working well with all 24gb ram recognized in triple channel mode with the previous MSI motherboard. I recently acquired a EVGA X58 SLI for a very inexpensive price and liked the looks a bit better, so I decided to upgrade to that. However, when the motherboard boots, the BIOS only shows ~16gb ram installed. Windows shows 24gb (16gb usable). CPUZ shows 24gb, but only in dual channel mode. If I try removing half of the sticks, the board recognizes 12gb properly in 3 channel mode. If I install 6x2gb ram sticks it recognizes all 12gb in 3 channel mode as well. I tried clearing cmos and flashing the latest bios and this did not fix the issue either. What is going on here? Does the board not support more than 16gb ram? Is there something wrong with the board? Or have I overlooked something?

Just an update. I believe the issue is with Windows 7 ram limitations, not the board. Not sure why the OS ram limits also limit the amount of ram shown in the bios, though.

Linus had similar issues, its not OS limitation, its BIOS settings, since your BIOS also shows 16GB. See video below, your menus will be different since you got a different board.

I had EVGA X58 Classified3 running 24GB and showing that in both BIOS and Windows 7 for years.

Bios tell the OS how much RAM no the other way around. I'm typing this on an X58 with 24GB. X58 is very picky with ram sticks and timings over 12GB.

Sorry, been awhile but I have revisited this.
Windows 7 home premium has a limit of 16gb, so I figured that was the issue. Its not. I got pro and still have the same issue.
Can't find any bios setting about a ram limit. Linus didn't fix the issue or find a setting in that video either.

I was running w7 64 home premium, now running w7 64 pro.
I tried plugging in a different SSD with Win10 on it and saw the same thing in windows 10. 24gb (16gb usable)
I have a lot of ddr3 spare and tried a completely different assortment of 6 4gb sticks and got the same result.

If you overtighten the CPU cooler on an X58 motherboard you will also have this issue.

My cooler is a Cooler Master ML240L (V1) AIO. I tried loosening the screws a fait bit and nothing changed. Board works perfectly fine with 12gb ram in tri channel, but if i populate all slots it throws itself into dual channel and shows 16gb usable.
