So just picked up an EVGA X58 SLI Micro for a friend as a much needed upgrade from his terribly ancient E5450 system.
I was quite surprised that one likely has to perform a mod to the motherboard to accept xeons.
There is however, zero knowledge on the web for my particular board.
I get that the mod is shorting some things to disable 2 QPI links (present in X series xeons)
So, will 'W' series xeons, like the W3680 work out of the box since it only has 1 QPI link (like i7s)
Maybe the 'X' series xeons also work out of the box?
By the way, my motherboard is Rev 1.0
Thanks!

You don't have to do any modding. Just update your bios to version 83.

Sorry to dig this post up, but I have the exact same board X58 SLI Micro E756 Rev 1.0 as javeloe. I have just downloaded the newest BIOS for the board (I believe it was v83). I also have a Gulftown (W3670) and a Westmere (X5650) but none of them wants to boot for some reason. The board gives me FF code for both of them. They work fine on my X58 SLI3 board.
Did EVGA secrectly remove support for 32nm CPUs on SLI Micro for some reason? because according to this post, at least the Xeon W3670 should work on this board.
Thank you.

1.0 revision boards need the mod.

So you are aware, they are not actually 'resistors' but shorting bars.  So you do not need to find a match value. Simply removing R460 and bridging the solder pads on R461, accomplishes the same thing.

It's wrong you need to do the mod. Or are you still sticking with it does not need to be done. It is one or the other. Your move.

So again explain why the op in the thread I linked didn't have to do the mod.

Details matter. L5640 Versus... Gulftown W3670 and a Westmere X5650 both which give the classic FF as described.
Anything else I can explain or do we need to argue this further?
