but keep in mind it is not safe to increase the memory voltage any higher than 1.7.

I just want to correct one thing. Intel strongly advise not to go above 1.65v So 1.7 for ram is way to high. This is to ensure long cpu life. All core i7 ram are rated at 1.65v. Go and look it up. Corsair's top end ram 2000mhz are also rated at 1.65v

Intel just says 1.65 because they dont want you to be higher than .5v above the VTT.
If your VTT is 1.3 you could bring your ram up to 1.75 or so without damaging your chip. On the other hand, your ram and IMC will run hotter now, but with good cooling 1.7~1.8 vdimm should'nt be too much of a problem. Just make sure its within .5 of the VTT.

thanks XXChronicXX for explaining that XD i was trying to find my source for what you explained. so many people think 1.65 is the limit, though there is hardly reason to change it most of the time XD

2. Next we will adjust the following options: CPU Clock Ratio to 20x. CPU Host Frequency (AKA QPI/BClock) to 200MHz. CPU Uncore Frequency to exactly double my memory multiplier, in this case 16x. This will give me exactly 4GHz (20x200), but we want 4.2GHz or more so keep reading...

a few questions on this.

So, if I want my 920 OC'd to 4.0GHz the above is all I need to do?

Second - I'm using Corsair XMS ram 6G at 1600 but when I put it in the box it defaults as 1066 and I have to update the settings to make it 1600. The multiplier shows 2:12. So should I set the CPU Uncore Freq at 24? Or leave the ram at default 1066 which is 2:8 and set Uncore to 16 and then reset the ram to 1600 later?

Do I look like a mushroom?.
No, then why do you keep me in the dark?.

An informed consumer is a happy one.

Re:EVGA X58 Overclocking Guide 2010/01/19 10:21:40 (permalink)
Thanks for this posting.  I was able to follow it and achieve the same results.   In doing so, I did some experimenting and have come up with an alternate setup that works pretty good for me while still keeping my CPU Temp under control.

Here is how I have my setup.  I am using the EVGA X58 LE motherboard with an Intel i7 920 processor.  I have 3GB of Kingston 1800Mhz Triple Channel Ram with XMP capabilities.  Soon I will be upgrading to 6GB or RAM.  I have the latest BIOS from the EVGA website.  Below is how I setup my BIOS.  First of all, I did the Load Defaults, Saved and Rebooted.  Then I set the following values in the BIOS.

On the Frequency/Voltage Control screen
CPU Clock Ration: 20x (this is the default)
    CPU Host Frequency: 200
    CPU Uncore Fequency: 16x
Everything else left at default values

On the Memory Features screen
    Memory SPD: XMP Profile 1
    Memory Frequency: 1067Mhz / 2:8
Everything else set at Auto or default values

On the Voltage Control screen
EVGA Droop Control: Without EVGA Droop
    CPU Vcore:   1.35V
Everything else at Auto or default settings

This puts me at 4.189Ghz.  I could go faster but the temps start getting a little to high for me.  I have had it as high as 4.5Ghz by following the the settings that were presented on this page but my CPU Temps started getting to high for my likings.  I am using the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler with two Yates Loon D12SH-12 120mm fans in a push pull setup.  At idle, my CPU is running around 30 degrees celsius with Cores running around 45 degrees celsius.  At full load using Prime95 Maximum Heat Test, the CPU is running around 70 degrees celsius with the cores running right around 82 degrees celsius.  I have run Prime95 for over 24 hours with no issues and everything seems to be very stable.  No reboots, BSOD or issues running any software or games.  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Even with setting my CPU Vcore to 1.35, I am seeing that the value is going as high as 1.375 which is supposedly the highest that this chip is recommend to run at based upon the datasheet from the Intel Website.

I am no expert by far.  But these values seem to work for me and my system has been extremely stable.  I am not sure if I am using the best values or if my CPU temps are too high but I have not had any problems with this setup.  My main idea for overclocking was to leave as many of the BIOS settings at the default or Auto setting and only change what I specifically needed to in order to Overclock my machine to a good value while keeping my CPU temp at 70 degrees Celsius or below under full load for an extended period of time.

If anyone sees a problem with my setup or has a suggestion to make it any better, it would be greatly appreciated.  I am always open for suggestions and want to make sure that I have the settings right as not to do any damage to my motherboard, CPU or ram.

Thanks For the great guide , Followed to the letter  and straight in at 4.2Ghz no probs on booting , Used the Eleet tool and managed to get to 213 QPI  then BSOD But Hey 4.4 ghs not bad with further tweeks 4.5ghz is on .
What everyone has to bare in mind is this post is what it is a GUIDE , All mobos may perform differant  , and Heat when overclocking is the overwhelming factor ,at 4.4 in P95 running 8 threads mine actualy got to 88c  so fitted a second 120mm fan  pronto.
The Mobo actualy benchmarks better at 4.3ghz probably due to vCore voltage shortage .but not willing to risk the chip i will keep to the 1.411v its on ,Only got 3gb of RAM at mo  6gb on the way  looking forwards to some more fun ....

yeh 1.475 vcore is a bit excessive, esp if you have a D0 stepping chip. my C0/C1 might require that much though. But is it even safe to run the northbridge on anymore than 1.2v, not to mention qpi at 1.4volts holy crap. mine is at 1.15 and my vtt is only at +125. I understand you have to increase these voltages to get to 4ghz and above, but by that much? lol oh well, you might as well push it if you can i guess. i have my northbridge (IOH) at 1.15 and im stable at 3.8ghz with 1.3565 vcore with memory at 1520mhz. Im using an E 757 mobo with mushkin redline 1600mhz memory with 6-7-6-18-72-1t timings @ 1.63v as of right now, gonna try and tighten timings if possible.

Mobo : Evga 760 3 SLI full waterblock from bitspower
VGA   : GTX 295 watercooling
Proccessor : intel xeon 3580 watercooling using heatkiller
memory ddr3 triple channel 3 X 2 GB = corsair dominator GT 8-8-8-24
Asus xonar HDAV 1.3
PSU ; corsair 1000w

I did update the newest bios E76044, and I have a problem with the RAM setting which is 1867 / 2:14 in bios, but the result in cpuz is 1496 /  2:10. The timing is consistent in 8-8-8-24-74-1T, which is the correct one, actually ??? Or is there any possiblity that I have the problem with the bios ?

Pls also help me with the result of my overclocking, which is unstable with the system of my overclocking after I tried to add the CPU host frequency to become 155 Mhz.... Pls find the below picture of setting bios :

I did all the settings as per the OP on this thread (I have all the same hardware), except I couldn't get the PWM Frequency to 1067KHz, I had a choice between 912KHz or 1222KHz, so I went with 912. Then when I restarted my computer, my video card wasn't outputting anything. The computer was running and the OS loaded, but I couldn't see it.
What could have gone awry?

Thanks!

This post alone will make me buy EVGA from now on. Not because of the performance (that is nice too) but the fact that an employee takes the time to give us tutorials like this.

See ya, Asus.

Yes, Janson I'm with you. As I am trying to decide what to buy for a new build.

I used the settings in this guide with the SZ2P bios.

I have the 920 DO at 206mhz bus on these settings to 4333.

CPU is at 1.375 for the D0 core at this speed.

Just did all this to my new EVGA X58 SLI LE (141-BL-E757-TR)...

Worked right off the bat according to CPUZ and the EVGA CPUZ-like utility. However, after running for a few minutes at pretty much idle the system speaker will let out this constant beep. It's an ear-piercing beep that does not turn off. I looked at the CPUZ utility real quick and the CPU was showing to be at 40C. I am running Corsair's H50 water cooling setup, just FYI. Then, I reboot an the system will no longer see my SSD and fails to boot with this error: DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I will work on tackling this.

In the mean time, I don't need to be at 4.0Ghz. I would be fine with 3.33+. So if I can tone down these settings to have a cooler CPU, I'll do it. Any suggestions?

Here is my setting for 3.35Ghz (see the attach files).

Intel I7 920
Ocz gold triple channel DDR3 1600  8-8-8-24
QPI freq. 160 Mhz
Turbo mode enable with vdroop on.
Set the memory to 1333 so when overclock it will give me 1600.
My system work ok.

Hi Everyone,

I'm having problems getting my core i7 975 extreme to OC stably over 4.13ghz. This bugs me because of how much i payed for this cpu, i'm running a liquid cooling kit for the cpu and mobo and I see others that, OC a 920 to these speeds on air. I can get the CPU to OC past 4.13ghz but, my pc crashes sometimes while in games. I've tried bumping up the voltage on the cpu one notch at a time, read reviews and watched you tube videos, but it's not helping. I'm not sure if im running the current updated bios version also. If anyone could help me figure out how to get more out of my system I would greatly appreciate it.

Could not help but notice all the questions here. When this guide was written I'm sure it was with the 920 CO chip. Here are some bios screens that should get all with the 920 DO's in the ball park...

This should be fine for good air coolers and most water cooled set-ups. Once up and running don't be afraid to experiment and start to bump the vcore and vtt down...temps should follow.

Re:EVGA X58 Overclocking Guide 2010/02/28 07:25:22 (permalink)
I Just picked up my i7 920 D0 and EVGA x58 SLI the only thing left is to pick up some RAM. I was wondering what is some great ram for overclocking this setup to around 4.2? or just 4.0 for starters? is 1600mhz good? what has been successful?

Bought these as back-up to my then rma'd Corsairs last year and they have proven worth the money.

Man, this is really great!  Used it as my jumping off point to get into Club i7 Stability >4GHz.

Oy vey! CD2 overclocking was relatively simple compared to this. Make a few changes to FBS, CPU and Ram Multiplier and you are pretty much set. **** did Intel have to complicate things?
