Generally speaking a BSOD code of 101 means you need to up the Vcore a little bit. If though you followed this guide then you are already sitting at 1.475 and upping it might not be the best idea. What i7 stepping do you have?

Thanks for the post, really appreciate it. I have not had any problems yet so far. There is one thing though that I am unsure of. I am really new to this and this is my first overclock, so I am wondering why my CPU only shows 4 threads when it should show 8 threads. I followed the post almost exactly, the only thing I did differently was use a slightly lower VCore voltage (1.45) for the CPU. Do you have any ideas on what might be causing this? I have the i7 920 and 12GB of corsair 16000 at 9-9-9-24. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Josh

I have a question, I read you guide. loved it helped alot. But one part I am lost. I have updated my Bios to the newest, i also have a classifed x3 sli. But when it comes to PWM Frequency, on mine it says CPU PWM Freq, and Memory PWM Freq. and I cant just set the CPU PWM to what I want it has presets. its like 9??Khz then 13??Khz. well I have it all set as the guide says other then the CPU Volts, I have a 920 D0/B and i have volts set around 1.44 or so and I have my CPU set at 215, so at 2:8 i am getting 1720 on ram. So what should I set the CPU PWM at?
Thank you for your time and help.

Oh Lord! Can't believe this ancient relic was restored as is for the new forums! Please take this this thread down before someone burns their D0 with these kinds of voltages and settings. Times have changed and this guide hasn't. You don't need that kind of voltage for 4.5Ghz with D0.

I would recommend people look for Shansmi's guide instead of this one.

Yeap thats the one I printed out and was reading along with the memory speed info link just below his post on all this. I am kind of wrapping my head around all of this. it just that some of it get confusing becasue in some of that the QPI is refered to as the CPU Freq and other times its the Uncore, and there is no tell tell sign which it is at that time. so I am trying to sort it all out in my head. And part of the problem is I am trying to get my ram stable, its a 7/7/7/20 at 1600 set, but when overclocking the speed, it turns into 1720 and I am not sure how to set the timing on it and volts but I am starting to get the volts thing. but the timing is throwing me. I will also put some of my specs in a sig now.

Re:EVGA X58 Overclocking Guide 2009/12/15 09:48:41 (permalink)
[color=#0000ff size=3 font="times new roman"]Hello Overclockers,

I am new here and I am looking for some advice / suggestions about overclocking my new built system. I have a Core I7 975 and EVGA Classified 759 and have been able to get my OC to 4.3 Ghz stable for about 4 Hrs solid in Prime95 "Blend" mode. After that length of time the system crashes. My high temps for the CPU in E-Leet is about 67c and Core temps between 76c - 80c. It seems to me that the uncore is the unstable part of the system because before I got to 4.3Ghz I did not mess with the host frequency and the system was more stable. Here is my

BIOS settings:
CPU CLOCK RATIO = 30X
HOST FREQUENCY = 143
CPU UNCORE FREQ = 4013 MHZ 28X
QPI FREQ SELECTION: 5.866 GT/S
MEMORY FREQ = 1867 MHZ / 2:14
TARGET MEMORY FREQ = 2006 MHZ W/ LATENCY SET AT 8-8-8-24

VOLTAGE SETTINGS WITHOUT VDROOP:
CPU VCORE = 1.350
CPU VTT = +150mv
QPI PLL VCORE = 1.350
VTT PWM FREQ = 370Khz
CPU PWM FREQ = 940Khz

SYSTEM SPECS:
EVGA X58 CLASSIFIED 759 W/ INTEL CORE I7 975
CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 2000 MHZ 8-8-8-24 1.65V
EVGA GTX 285 SSC IN SLI
2 WD VELOCIRAPTOR 300GB IN RAID (SYSTEM) AND 2 SEAGATE BARRACUDA 1TB 7200.13 (DATA)
ENERMAX REVOLUTION 1050 PS

I have the CPU cooled by an EK Supreme LT and the 285 on EK water blocks as well with a Fesser 360 radiator and used TIM 0098 thermal paste on the CPU and GPU's. I would like help first getting lower temps with the same OC and possibly a higher OC after that.

Can you recommend a beginner's overclocking guide, be it a website, book, magazine?  I'd rather not just copy your settings, I'd like to actually know what i'm doing.  I'm trying to decide if I want to spend a little extra on an I7 950 or OC a 920 and save a couple hundred bucks.   But I don't want to touch any settings until I know why and what they do.  Google gives me dozens of "guides" that are not well written.  You seem to be the most intelligent person who's posted anything like this so by default you are a trusted source.

Thanks.

Yeah, I know what both of you mean greenhawk84 and djenkins. I have search real hard for info on overclocking the Core I7 975. All I ever find is how fast someone has there system running. I am not new to overclocking, just overclocking the Core I7. There are so many different components to the Core I7. I would like a detailed explanation of the different voltage settings and what parts of the Core I7 they effect. Such as what voltage will make the uncore stable. I see many people running faster clocks than I am on less vcore volts but 1.35V is the lowest I can go and be stable. I just think there must be something I am missing here. Thats why I posted all of my specs and have not yet received any response or guidance. Hopefully someone will help ;-)\

Thanks,
Jesse

gossmann1,  in the forums there are several knowledgeable folks that offer help - you would probably have better luck posting your settings and your issues, in a new thread rather than in this sticky forum.
I would start by downloading the bios template posted here in the stickies, fill it out with all your settings, then post a new thread with your bios template and what you are wanting to achieve.

Thanks for the guide! Flame it if you want to but this was the first time my C0 got over 4Ghz. Ended up at 4.2GHz with my first sub-10 second 1M SuperPi run. The only deviation was using 1.375 Vcore...

I have this motherboard:

EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 X58 3-Way SLI Core i7

and

Intel I7-920

I purchased:

Corsair Dominator 8GB (2x4) 1600 MHZ

I see posters using 6GB (2x3) 1600 MHZ

Is it harder to overclock with 8GB (2x4) 1600 MHZ

Just want to comment on your ram setup. Why do have go dual channel instead of tir? What is the point of the x58 Bloomfield then? You could have get P55 and 860 Lynnfield that will be way faster then your 920 and supports dual channel.

I already bought the motherboard.  From your advice and other research, I'm going to use 6 Gig for Triple Channel.  We have the same motherboard, ram and D0 series chips.

Did you use the EVGA E-Leet utility to overclock?

What is your cpu temperature, when running at a full load?

Thanks

I see many of you think that you can just change some numbers and have it miraculously work. well that isnt the case. each individual piece of hardware is slightly different. each i7 is not exactly the same, there are variations that occur when the wafer is made and set ect ect. you have to find the sweet spot for your processor, ram and mobo. this requires many many MANY experimental increases in voltage, frequencies, and timings.
A good place to start (after you conferm everything runs stock, at stock settings (meaning you have your ram set to its rated timings and frequencies, you may have to overclock your proc a bit for this, esp if you have 2000 mhz ram lol)) is at 3ghz for i7's. most will run that easy, you may not even have to change voltages. test it with prime 95 or another benchmark to see if its stable. if stable, turn the voltage down and repeat the process until it becomes unstable, or wont boot (it should just hard restart on you if its unstable during testing). then, knowing this voltage, you can safely plan ahead for higher frequencies, say you want to run 4ghz. set it up in the bios with a decent voltage (like 1.35) run the test, if its not stable increase, if so then decrease until you find the sweet spot. however, some processors might not run there best at 4ghz, maybe its 3.95, or 3.7 or 3.8. i7's, however, are not that finicky and should gain more processing power at higher clocks. you can do the same process with memory and timings, qpi ect ect. but keep in mind it is not safe to increase the memory voltage any higher than 1.7. experiment a bit, but remember, higher voltages means less life expectancy (for most hardware, pending on temperature), so be careful.
you can do this same process with your graphics cards, however, most of the time, voltages are not adjustable, unless there is an interface designed for it. you can extract you bios from you gfx card, and change it, but that is for advanced users only lol. you can screw up your card pretty bad if your just fumbling around and try and reflash your video card. well, i hope this helped those of you that are new to overclocking, heck i am as well :P, be careful and have fun!

sincerely

oh, and btw, dont forget that just because its unstable, doesnt mean its just your processor. you have to make sure all the other components are stable too. for example, your cpu could be stable, but your memory not, even if your not overclocking your ram. so keep that in mind that you have to continually adjust and test each setting. it takes awhile, but is well worth the effort. and make sure you have a good PSU (power supply) or you could do some damage and undervoltage your stuff. bad for HDD's i tell u, and ram XD.

How about the Blue Screen error 0x00000124. I saw it somewhere and cant remember where. I think either VTT or VCore causes it.

Thanks

No I never will use any software in windows environment to adjust the settings in the bios which also include overclocking. So no I don't use E-Leet to overclock anything or mess with any voltages. I use E-Leet to monitor temps or just check the cpuz screen for my cpu info. I set everything in the bios and my max temps at full load when running linx 81c on highest core. CPU temp is around 65c. So its fine. I'm happy with my overclock.
