I think maybe if you think about it.... what company is going to admit that they have a faulty dangerous product in peoples homes and risk loosing a lot of money by doing so, not to many would. They should.... but they won't. So hoping that EVGA is going come this forum and admit that!! not going to happen.

I comprehend and agree with what you are saying here. I guess my biggest issue/concern is that is this is a known issue I/we/anyone should NOT be able to even purchase these boards.

http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16813188048

I do realize EVGA no longer has it on there store for purchase but if this is as much of an issue as it appears to be I don't think it should be able to be bought period.

Maybe I am being unrealistic but if the "certain configurations" is basically the 470 or 480 GPU's I see this as a problem as most people who spend $300+ on a motherboard and the same and in most cases more on a CPU are likely not low balling on there GPU's.

It's just really burning me up (no pun intended...) knowing I spent thousands on this build (within the past month mind you) and now I am scared to even use it

I completely agree with you, makes me very unhappy to know I have a potential fire hazard sitting in my home and the company that produced it knows that. I am not feeling to EVGA happy hearing about this problem.

... Now I've seen tests that show even the 295's under full load pulling 317 watts which is more than NVidia claims the 480 can pull.

Confirmed, ^ , Now I am confused, Nvidia lists specs on my 295, as 289 watts Max without OC, and a 480 listed max is only 250, I've been running 295,s since they first came out, The 295 has a 6 pin and a 8 pin, so 75+150 =225, so up to 64 watts would have to come off the slot, which is rated at 75 watts, Do the 480's only have 2 ( 6 pins )  ? No I just read a 480 needs an available 6 pin and a 8 pin, so it should be withen spec, as long as the power is all pulled of the correct points, at the correct amounts ?

Kmoore a GTX 480 can pull up to 300w at stock... believe it or not, not all but a majority do. Once you overclock feed it some more voltage your looking at 300w plus, but once it goes over 300w your looking at water cooling and more exotic forms of cooling. i am sure some even at stock can pull over 300w if stressed enough 3d vision, max AA, upping all settings to the max really making the card work.

Wow.....good 'thread....nice to know our 759's are on the edge.....perhaps Evga should allow us 759 owners the opportunity to "step-up"to a Classy 3  My Board is still fine....but I thik I'll hang onto my older HX PSU just in case........

My Board seems to require a higher the normal amount of Voltage to get my 980X Stable at light OC's.....hhhhmmmmmm....have also been looking at the Rampage Extreme Board ...

That would mak the cause of the problem, Nvidia's not EVGA's, but I somehow doubt Nvidia will step forward, If Nvidia listed spec at 250 Watts max See  http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_480_us.html (Under specifications, thermal and power specs )  However ,If  EVGA sold a product designed to meet those specifications, and then found out those specifications were a lie, it would be kind of hard to blame EVGA. But then again EVGA does sale the product listing Nvidia's specs. Just the system + card at Min 600W, they convenyantly, omited the cards Max draw. that Nvidia quotes as 250. But then again, fault is not nearly as important as fix. other than who it is that is supposed to fix it.

The slot is only rated for 75W.
http://www.10stripe.com/featured/quick/pci-express-2-0.php
I don't know how the cards balance the power draw between connectors. To reduce this connector melting the cards should draw the limit from the supplementary connectors (75W + 75W or 75W+150W) and then the rest from the PCIE slot. I don't believe it works this way unfortunately.

well if all GTX 480's ran at 250w then all would overclock the same but you as well as anyone knows there are variations in gpus, cpus etc you name it. Like some 980x's need more power to run at stock than others, while some need more power to overclock than others... not all of them run at the rated mhz speed some have a qpi of 132.7 or just over 133. Its not a fault, nothing is perfect not even a living human being or animal on this planet is made perfectly, everything in the world has a flaw, esp things that are man made.
The Fix is simple and has been done release a motherboard that has an extra power connector input for the pcie slots again. EVGA now has thier's ASUS and Gigabyte already have thiers as well as other vendors/manufacturers. The solution replace the rma boards with the upgraded refresh boards of those who have ran into the issue of the 24 pin power cable pins burn. Look at it like a business would look at it how can we fix this and reduce cost without having to replace every single old board that was sold to save $$ on the boards that need to be replaced with the configuration that causes the burn out.

The TDP on the 400 series is more an average load then the absolute max it was on the older cards. The stock voltage varies a lot on the 470's and 480's so power use must too.

If you get the Classifed 3 or 4-way sli you will be fine, its not just evga pretty much all the old x58 extreme boards that did not come with a power connector for extra power to the pcie lanes are the ones that fall under this, but the price is what is the difference say between evga vs asus, The ASUS is built better, has better features on thier rampage3's but thier support is not as good as EVGA's.
It does not make the ASUS Rampage III a bad board by any means, in fact I would say the layout, and design is better than the classified 3's it may not look as stunning as a classified 3 with its glowing red E but in my opinion its a superior board that does not come with the superior customer service to match it if anything should happen but its lack of CS is made up for in its 299 price tag where the Classified 3's price tag is at 379. This is why I prob wont be returning the Asus Rampage III when it gets here, better cooling, better layout, takes up less room, better features and so on. But ASUS has been in the motherboard business for a long time of making thier own boards.

Im thinking of buying another board myself, should EVGA not agree to switch my E759 to a Classy 3. I was a huge fan for many years. Had many boards with them, since 680i.

I can't live with this board. It's too dangerous. Need that extra connector for PCIe.

Well its nice they offer a Classified 3 but in order to get one you have to have the right configuration for the 759/760 to fail, and you cannot do it until it fails meaning a burnt out psu, possibly mobo, and other hardware..=/  Its good but its bad at the same time... but I can understand why they are doing it... It also might force alot of people to buy other brands because they are worried to use thier 759/760 boards to the point of burning something up, and want to avoid that whole mess alltogether. I know I would had liked to... 2x psu's gone, and a limited edition mobo, yes I get a classified 3 but at the cost of 2x quality psu's and no telling what else is gone because of it, hopefully I am lucky and get away with just a 2x psu's and a mobo=/

So what it ends up being is sure you get your board replaced. AFTER it burns up more hardware than the board itself costs.
And I've seen the 480's pulling 400+ watts each OC'd and under load. There's a video I've linked before that shows 3 480's pulling as much as 1270 watts.

So, we cannot get an upgrade until the system goes up in smoke? That is the question for Evga. I know I don't want to leave my running for folding or anything and come back and have nothing at all. At least offer it as a step up for those that run SLI or the configuration that can cause this issue.

Re:EVGA X58 759 Classifed Limited Edition #551 down... going to get an ASUS....=/ 2010/10/08 08:26:55 (permalink)
I see why many people are unhappy. I am still not too thrilled, its cool evga stepped up and gave out Classified 3's to those of us once the issue was identified. But the fact that it has to happen to get a safe board is what I am sure people are not happy about, and its taken people to speak up about this issue for it to come to light.

Personally I think the old x58 boards that suffer from this design flaw whatever vendor it is need to be taken off the market, if its possible to salvage them cool if not, donate them to say Stanford for folding and have a warning of do not put X named video cards X series on this board. It would even be a tax write off so not a tottal loss.
Those with the affected boards I think if the company is truly looking out for the consumer  a swap or a stepup should be made the old board once again given to say Stanford for their folding. Talking to people the guys at Stanford that make folding machines in thier tech labs litterally make frankienstien rigs so I am sure if they want to put ati or nvidia x named card on the board they will mod the board with a molex to get it to handle the gpu's so there is not a 24 pin melt down. All of it could really be written off and the consumer/business/Stanford would all win in this.
I am sure whatever company thinks of doing this will end up selling more boards in the end. But as it stands right now people are a bit leery of buying any x58 mobo, the ones who addressed the problem first without what i suggested with newer boards will be the ones that get the consumers money. It shows they cared enough to take care of the problem and wanted to make it right and fix the issue fast. Now what I suggested would sell hardware it would be more of a PR move but hey, it would help x named company sell more boards no real big loss in profits some will be gained in the tax write off. It shows that the company really cares to make things right but also to help in a bigger cause at the same time.

I don't like it all......hhhmmmm...lets wait until you perhaps take out a $300 PSU and maybe a $1K CPU and we'll then work something out for you...as in a Classy3

This is obviously an "issue" worthy of a recall / step-up whatever ......think I paid close $600 CDN when the Classy 759 debuted.....btw #0525.

Re:EVGA X58 759 Classifed Limited Edition #551 down... going to get an ASUS....=/ 2010/10/08 09:20:43 (permalink)
Damn it, I'm running 480's in tri sli with my 759 Classified. So far two of my Corsair's HX1000 have died and I always thought it was because of faulty psu's. Never thought of it being the motherboard, that is killing the psu's. So far my board isn't dead, but I just checked the 24pin connector, and it's really hot and I mean REALLY hot! Till now I had my rig running 24/7, but I have to admit, that I'm scared to do this right now, because I do not want the comp to burn down the house when I'm not at home. There has to be done something to fix this, even if the board is still working for now. We can't keep our comps running like this waiting for it to go up into smoke!!

EVGA, any solution?

It seems with the corsair 1000hx the psu kills itself before it burns your board, had the same thing happen to me...
Now the Antec 1200w just keeps trucking but it gets damaged both with voltage output and its 24 pin connector pretty much burns the 2 pins that are shown in multiple pictures and crazy stuff starts happening to your pc more so than with the corsair 1000hx...

I've also commented on this on a similar Thread over at Hardware Canucks....certainly worthy of it anyhow....

I have been contemplating getting a 3rd 480 over this past week, but I can honestly say thier is no way in hell I'm going to put that additional strain on my Board....if I still had my 920 Chip in thier. maybe take the chance...but not with a 980X and 12GB Dominator RAM...thats about 1.4K worth of HW right thier, add in an AX 1.2 kW and it starts to add up ;)

I had 2.... TWO!! e759s catch fire!  both occurred around the mosfets.  the same area burned located at the top edge of the board near the cpu.  there was a fierce jet of fire and then smoke....  this is my third e759; after having to pay for two and one rma.  both evga and newegg had said it was due to a watercooling leak.....I'M ON AIR!!!

I hope you have better luck w/ your new board.

So i have to ask guys. Is this limited to the old classifieds only, or all x58 boards. I have an X58 SLI3 that I plan on going SLI with using two 480's, but after reading this post not sure it is safe or not. Kinda dont want a fire hazard either.... Sorry to hear about your problems btw

The problem exists on any motherboard without an extra connector for the PCI-E lanes, and with overclocked powerful GPUs in a multi-GPU configuration.  The X58 SLI3 doesn't seem to have an extra connector for the PCI-E lanes, so yes this problem can happen to you too.  Nice and safe here on my P55 FTW.

Actually a none overclock will cause it too. Just an FYI just need powerful power hungry GPU's put on your board two or more"that we know about for nvidia cards right now".
