Exactly KMoore.

I have nothing to base my planned setup on as if it's going to be safe. Like you I bought the E759 board. I had planned on running three cards on it with max oc and volts. The three cards will be two GTX 465's and a GTX 470 and would be folding on the cards and cpu 24/7. This worries me.

I also have the E760 that I ran two GTX 480's with no issue, but never folded on that system under that configuration, just a single GTX 480 and the cpu.

Falcon_CMH

MB manufacturers have had extra MB power connectors for a long time this is not recent.  I have a Asus P6T6 that is 2.5 years old and it has an additional 8 pin power connector on it.  When designed properly for 3 or more GPUs all MBs will have extra power connectors and this is very old and known by the industry as a whole.

As me having a grudge against EVGA that is ludicrous.  I love EVGA and their GPUs.  But I am an enthusist and I preach out here all the time about recommending users get Asus MBs over all others period.  I do this because I want the best and want users to have a good experience.  (Edit: And I am rewarded for this by my MBs not melting)

Look EVGA has been plagued with several MB issues this isn't the first one but it is probably the worse.

There is an old saying first time shame on EVGA (or whoever) second time shame on me.

Funny but I never seen extra 8 pin power connector on my P6T6 other than the one for CPU and also I do not see one on P6T7. Falcon_CMH does not know what he is talking about as usual. He is trying to sway opinions without knowing facts.

Here is my take on this motherboard issue. EVGA, ASUS, GIGABYTE, MSI and others designed these boards prior to Fermi power hog cards. They did not know about or expected this that is being brought upon them. Also NVIDIA did piss poor job on limiting how much power can be sucked through PCIe interface.

Thing is that we forum goers are always on the bleeding edge of this type of technology and unfortunately this will happen.

Similar to what I was saying. Nvidia should have done more extensive testing with multiple GPU's. With both the 295's and the 480's. Mobo makers began including the extra power connector to help alleviate the problem. But the real problem lies with the GPU's themselves. They are beginning to draw extremely too much power. Folding 24/7 with just my GTX 470 and my 260 is making my power bill sky rocket. I think with Kepler we are going to see a big change in power draw.

Maybe EVGA could have took it upon themselves to be the ones to warn everyone of the dangers of multiple GPU usage without the extra protection. Would I blame them? Not at all. What needs to happen here is someone make an official statement. Personally, I think it should be Nvidia.

And as Yerbuddy said, my opinions might change if this were to happen to me. But then my opinion would also be biased. At least for now I can look at this from both sides. I'm certainly not gonna risk firing up three 480's on my 758. But I think my wallet will help me more on that one than this thread will

And as for Falcon, there are no extra 8 pin's on the P6T6 as DMIINC stated. The manual is available for download from there website.

I do not want my boards replaced, I do not want anyone to place a head on a choping block, or even point fingers, All I want is a clear understanding of my equipment, it's cababilities, the operating envelope, and recomended safe operating paramaters. and do not feel like that's too much to ask for.

As far as " knowing enough about " that is why you want an official statment, It's far better to hear something official from those that know, than allow comments, from those that speculate.  A properly worded response in post # 2 would have eliminated the need for any post after that.

AMEN!  That is not too much to ask from EVGA.  I don't care what the speculation is until I hear it from the "horses mouth."  Especially from speculators that don't even own the equipment or have anything to lose.  Keeping us in the dark and allowing the speculation to continue is the kind of irresponsible "customer service" I would expect from other companies.  I did not expect it from EVGA.

This issue is not related to the specific motherboard, if you search around, you will find others that are not specific to EVGA.

Thanks Jessie, it's goof to know that you guys are working on it.

@hellcat:

I have a headache, your analogy about the Mustang almost made me vomit! If you want your analogy to hold any water then maybe you should have said putting a Boss/Cobra/Salleen engine in a Mustang. Those motors are made to fit and work in a stang. Just like the 480's or 5870 or other high end gpu's that are made to fit and work on the boards in question. It's not about making the car faster, it's about using all of the cars capabilities! Here is a thought for you when you go to the Salleen store and say "hey I have a 93 Mustang LX 5.0 notchback, and I want to put in your Salleen 281 motor, can I do it?!? Salleen would respond "absolutely, please do! And by the way you will need...,...........Wait for it................ A BIGGER FUEL PUMP, A BIGGER MASS AIR SENSOR/THROTLE BODY, A STRONGER TRANSMITION, etc etc. They most certainly won't let you out of the store without knowing that. And if they did then your mechanic would know and tell you. Is it not the responsibility of the motor maker, when knowing your application, to notify you of the nessisary upgrades needed to make it work? Do you see the point?!? The funny thing is that your analogy makes my point even clearer, so thanks!

Hey guys

A quick update on this situation, so far we can say that this issue is very rare, and happens only on a very specific set of components. To date we have had only a few confirmed cases. With that being said we are thoroughly investigating this issue with our engineers along with NVIDIA and Antec, and will provide an update soon. If you do experience this problem, please contact me directly at jacobf@evga.com with details.

Jacob, while I have full confidence you guys are doing what needs to be done to get to the bottom of this may I suggest that you start talking to AMD folks as well in regards to this.  In fact it was AMD cards that first exhibited this problem in combination with certain boards (in EVGA's case Classified series).  NVIDIA followed suit once they put out their GTX400 series cards.  In my case the failure you have seen was caused while running two reference HD5850 cards in CrossFireX.

Realistically I simply think that this is an issue of outdated power specifications meeting understated GPU power requirements.  However the brunt is bore by the motherboard and PSU manufacturers as the problem exhibits through these two mediums.

Jacob,

Is it possible to list the "specific set of components?"  It may save someone from having this "very rare" issue all of a sudden cause problems.

That being said, thank you for thoroughly investigating.  Any update is welcome news - at least it is to me.  Thank you!

Donta, can offer a small piece of advice?, you might not want to say that this setup is okay and this one isn't. Its just that we aren't sure which setups are having this issue but your right in saying that it seems to happen under the cicumsrances you have laid out.

Well like in post one of this with shamino's comment at the time the board was made the 280/285's where around and shamino stated that the nvidia cards where not sucking up as much voltage as the ati cards. so we can guess they are safe. Like doubles is still on 200 series cards a revision card at that. So hes going to be more than fine according to shaminos post on extreme systems. Look at the links i posted, of other people whos rigs have gone down from this and what thier hardware configurations where so you have a general idea and you know if your at risk or not. Its pretty much putting 1 and 1 together to draw a semi general standardised conclushion on what causes it that we know of right now.

Thanks Jacob for response.  Guess I'll wait to do molex mod until I hear more.  Don't want to do mod if it is not necessary.  Kind of nervous about putting extra voltage on PCI-E tracers.  Right now my 24 pin seems ok.

Thank you much Jessie now I can rma this thing. by any chance do you guys offer a molex cable for this thing with slim molex cables like ones half the size of the regular molex adapters at a 90 Degree for those who do not have room/clearance can plug the molex into something that is in a tight space that a regular standard molex will not fit?

So far the Classy 3 w/3-way GTX480s shows no sign of a melted 24-pin.

With all due respect to everyone, including Donta:
keep the freaking thread on topic. Arguments dont solve problems, just escalate them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but these arguments are not helping to find the solution to the melting of the 24pin on the boards.  IMO, the problems starts witht the Tri-SLI configurations whether is GTX 480, 470, or ATI 4890, 5870, 5970,etc.  Plus the hidden power surge you may have in your apartment, house or neighborhood.  Don't focus on 1 component, there are many variables for this problem to occur.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Enough already.I can't give you an actuall number, but I seem to remember "maybe" 10 posts in here about people having burnt pins.(could be more, but not many). I also have no idea how many 759,760 boards have been sold from EVGA.I would bet thousands? Now we are talking about 8 pin CPU power plugs?

This is what I have been trying to get people to do every time I post.  Nobody benefits from constant bickering back and forth about who has better boards.  I can pick out a milion and one faults with every manufacturer.  This thread is about resolving a very specific, but very difficult to diagnose problem.  So with that and back on a technical note, no, this is not specific to just tri-SLI/tri-Fire combinations.  In my case it happened with just two HD5850s

Mine was 2 480's o.c.'d and overvolted running Metro2033 when it happended, on my 759. But I'm using the same extact power supply...WITH a 24 pin extension, again... now on my NEW 760, same cards, and NOT o.c.'ing or overvolting, SLI does'nt need it, running Vantage is not worth melting another board if you ask me!!

EVGA_JacobF EVGA just has very active forums where we can all come together, identify the issue and try to resolve it.

Yes! Which is why this thread and any other thread is even in here - That's all any of us want is to identify the issue and try to resolve it. I think most would be happy knowing what the "certain configurations" are, I know I would.

For all the arguing - *inset facepalm smiley here* (You should add that one somehow Shane!) - The thread doesn't need arguing, it's actually causing some people to shy away from it entirely, is my guess.

I am sincerely interested to know of any information that comes to light in this, Jacob. You can twitter it when you guys are ready and I will know right away since I follow you lol

I just built my 760 classy build and havent had any problems.  Although i only run 1 480's and i dont have my computer on 24/7.  I'll continue to monitor but from what i am reading its mainly happening to people with sli config, granted Donta stated that it may happen to single card applications as well.
