Yes it's compatible..Did you use only the cables that came with the 850 G3?..Were you using another PSU with the  Z370-H prior to getting the 850 G3 or is this an all new build?

Hard to tell what shorted out and why on a new build, if the mobo or PSU is faulty or somthing got incorrectly connected/installed, mobo got shorted on an improperly placed standoff or what.

You might check the pinout voltages of the mobo 24 pin and 4+4 pin CPU connectors, you can find out how to do it here to make sure the voltages are correct..You can pick up a cheap multimeter for around $15 at an auto parts store or Walmart or someplace..Unplug the PSU briefly before testing so that it resets in case it may have latched off which they will do when shorted out.

Take it all apart..See if maybe the mobo will power up on a table, outside the case.

Good luck..If the mobo ends up being toast, don't RMA it to ASUS, return it to where you bought it from..RMA'ing to ASUS is almost always painful.

I might just take all the parts to the computer shop to test them out. I have no idea how to test each part at home.

    Thanks again.

Setup your motherboard outside the case, a table test.
A Wooden Table works fine as a Kitchen Table and even a Glass Table Top.
" then smoke came out from the motherboard." Could have been a MB Standoff shorting out the MB.
You should remove the MB and look for where the Burnt Marks are.

That wouldn't cause the problem..You can use another AC power cord as long as it the same AWG number or a lower AWG number on the cord..The lower the AWG number, the thicker the wires inside it are.

most likely the mobo is damaged but is there any chance the CPU also get damaged too ?

    Thanks to all.

Yeah, chances are the mobo is damaged now, or was bad to begin with..CPU should probably be okay, hard to tell.

In most all cases I've seen that have a smoked motherboard another component burned before the CPU. Not 100 percent guaranteed though.

Please let us know the outcome of this. Sorry to hear the magic smoke was released.  When you remove the motherboard you will more than likely be able to see something burned.  Thank you Bob and Bcav for helping. :)

Hi guys, exchanged the motherboard but later found out the video card was burned. it is a EVGA GTX 1070. this card was purchased on 07/2016. fan on the card was removed for liquid cooling. I understand the warranty was voided. if it possible for EVGA to fix this ? it such a waste to throw $500 away if EVGA unable to doing anythings. I understand is totally my fault. [image]C:\Users\Thomas\Desktop[/image]

    Thank you all.

Are you thinking the warranty is voided because you exchanged the cooler for a water block? If so EVGA does not void the warranty for this. Other companies policy may be this way. If you are able to return the card to the way it was purchased, it maybe able to be warrantied. If there is physical damage they it will void warranty. I would contact support to see what they can do. I do hope you registered the card, you should do this for any product bought here.

Did you have another card to test system with, to see if issue was solved?? GL!
