I gave it one more shot before sending my 3090 KP with the failed MCU BIOS flash back to EVGA.
Windows 10 20H2
Precision X1 V1.1.8
Clean install of Nvidia Driver Version: 497.09
Intel i9-1900K in Asus ROG Maximus Apex XIII motherboard with the latest BIOS(v1007)
newest drivers for all hardware
The MCU Firmware failed to update through PX1 just as before.  When installing trying Precision X1 V1.2.9 after that to do a MCU firmware update, it also failed.

Good try.
I am also plagued by this issue.
However this happened to me yesterday, when I opened PX1, it auto updated to 1.3.0. and it called for a firmware update, and it failed.
I removed all evga software and also cleaned the registry and installed PX1-v1.1.8 as mentioned by boyleusa, and it failed.
I do not have a machine with windows 20H2 as I tend to keep them all updated.

I did try some gaming and I had no issues with BF2042 set to ultra and on a ultrawide.

EVGA support said it had to be a certain version or newer.  If Windows 10 is updated, it shouldn't be an issue.

I did manage to update my other KP 3090 and the warranty replacement KP 3090 on a Z590 system with a 10900K and fully updated Windows 10.

Hello, I know that those who visit this forum have the misfortune to know the failure of the firmware.
I have known it yesterday evening and if I post here it is because there is hope.
My 3090 kingpin freshly installed in a new water cooling after I launched the updates of windows, I take the precision X1 and the surprise I launch the update and I see failure, as the images of the beginning of this post.
In my head I knew that a firmware that fails is really bad but, as the card was still working I persisted.
Reinstallation of windows with usb key
Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3920.0
19044.1288
I update the drivers with driver booster and I launch the precision X1 (1.3.0.0) which results by a failure.
I say to myself well that ***** of RMA then it will remain in the loop a moment.
2min later I launch windows update and I retry precision x1 and the magic it passes.
To summarize, with luck it will do it!
Sorry for the long post, but this success was worth sharing.
Get lucky.

Re: EVGA Precision X1 failed firmware update on 3090 Kingpin 2024/07/29 03:49:00 (permalink)
Still an issue in 2024 with EVGA Precision X1 1.3.7.0 & NVIDIA 560.70 Drivers
The Firmware Update failed countless times on 3090 KINGPIN Hybrid Gaming on an old z390 MB that was running Win 11 Enterp. 22631.3880.

What worked, Possible Short Answer: Removing/Placing the GPU into the left slot.

Long Answer:

1.
Uninstalling EVGA Precision X1 1.3.7.0
Installing EVGA Precision X1 1.1.8.0
Disabling Internet

May not Apply:
Disabling Windows Security (Auto-Re-enabled upon Log-In...)
Disabling Startup of Windows Memory Cleaner 2.0
Disabling Startup of NZXT CAM Software
Disabling Startup of L-Connect-3 Software

2.
Restarting into BIOS
Disabling Above 4G Decoding
Disabling C.A.M (Clever Access Memory)
Shutting PC Down
Switching Off Power Supply/Physically Unplugging Power Cord From Power Supply
Disconnecting everything USB, leaving nothing but KB/Mouse.
Removing PCI-E USB Expansion Card
Removing 2nd NVMe from the rightmost slot.
M.2 WiFi slot has never been used...

3.
Removing/Placing the GPU into the left slot.

May not Apply:
Disconnecting/Swapping DisplayPort to HDMI (Make sure HDMI cable can support monitor)

Switching Power Supply On/Physically Plugging in the Power Cord/Booting into Windows...
Launching EVGA Precision X1 1.1.8.0/Updating...

4.
After successful update, physically making sure the LED Screen on the KINGPIN looked normal and without the dreaded FIRMWARE UPDATE on display...
Uninstalling EVGA Precision X1 1.1.8.0
Installing EVGA Precision X1 1.3.7.0/Updating.

Confidently assuming the 2nd update went well...

5.
Shutting Down PC
Switching Off Power Supply/Physically Unplugging Power Cord From Power Supply
Re-connecting everything as they were previously...
Switching Power Supply On/Physically Plugging in the Power Cord/Booting into BIOS
Reversing the BIOS changes
Booting into Windows
Reversing everything from step 1, obviously skip the EVGA Precision related task...
