Re:EVGA Precision X 4.2.1 Released

Ephebus I've just replaced my trusty 2 year-old EVGA GTS 450 with an EVGA GTX 660 3GB Superclocked+ (P/N: 03G-P4-2666-KR), only to find out that my frame rates in some spots in the game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (and a few other 3D applications) actually got lower. I then noticed on EVGA Precision X v4.2.1.2143 that while the game was running the GPU was clocked at only ~700-800 MHz and the actual power used hovered around 50%. Temps never got higher than 60 celsius at load so that was not the issue.
Knowing this was due to the fact that Wolf:ET is an old game and, most importantly, that NVIDIA's 600 series are plagued by the wretched GPU boost "feature", I tried using the K-Boost feature on Precision X to stop the card from downclocking. Unfortunately, it had no effect whatsoever, not even after restarting the computer (which should not be necessary with that version).
So a few hours ago I wrote EVGA's support asking about it and they just sent me the following reply:
Hello
Unfortunately the developer of this software has announced that he has no plans to provide 64 bit support at this time. Once the demand for this type of software is needed it will be developed. However at this time it is felt that EVGA Precision will be 32 bit only at this time. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this matter has caused. Regards EVGA
I found the answer confusing at least, because setting the power target, setting the GPU and the memory clock offsets, saving profiles, etc., works just fine (I'm on XP 64). Maybe the person who replied was referring to the RivaTuner Statistic Server, which only works on 32-bit OS's? And if he was, is K-Boost linked to RTSS and so unavailable for people on 64-bit OS's? I find this quite strange because I'm pretty sure I've seen quite a few posts by people using K-Boost and 64-bit OS's.
please refer to this postit's my reply on the other thread you have posted on.

GTX570 using PrecisionX 4.2.1.2143 Fan speed will not go above 85% regardless of GPU temperature or fancurve settings. I have selected and deselected the auto choice on fan speed with no improvement.

If I remember correctly from my 580 days, I think they come factory with a max fan speed of 85%. There were firmware/ fan unlocker BIOS updates for them released by EVGA here in the forums. Very interesting. I had no idea that the hardware was locked to prevent sufficient cooling.

I ran two 580's OC'd in SLI and really never felt that 85% fan speed wasn't enough. My two 670 FTW's in SLI always stayed under 70C even with a max fan speed of 80%. Depends on your ambient room temp and case airflow primarily. Maybe there is something you can do with your case and extra fan(s) to help keep your card cooler?? Even a 120mm fan blowing at the card can make a difference. But don't forget that EVGA tech support should be able to help you out with fan unlocking firmware...

That would be very helpful. I have already cleaned out the heatsink and all fans are working properly. Litecoin hashing puts quite a load on the GPU and the temperatures quickly rise to unacceptable levels.

Toasty is fine, but when I see 91C and the fan at only 85% I see a problem.

bdary NP, happy to help... I'm not sure about Frame rate target needing it, but I'm thinking yes. Of course any OSD needs it whether you use PrecX, AB, or even Aida, etc... Let us know how it turns out...![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/cool.gif)
Hi, Sorry about the delayed response. So after trying that, it still does not save the frame rate target. I uninstalled the EVGA Precision X and the Rivatuner (First uninstalled the RTSS and then the Precision X) and then redownloaded it from the EVGA website. I made sure that there were not any previous settings or any files from the previous installation. For some reason the Precision X just refuses to save the frame rate target setting. This started to happen after the newest NVIDIA Drivers which I think are the 331.82 Game Ready drivers. I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit. Thanks for any advice/help!

I have been noticing with this version installed it suddenly just pops open the main program at random times (like it opens when you click the main program icon in system tray). It happens when I am web browsing playing games or just whatever. It happens after a mouse click too which is really strange because I am nowhere near the system tray icon when it happens. When playing games this is extremely disrupting lol and scares the crap out of me because I think something just broke. My hardware is not overheating in any way and it works perfectly fine otherwise. I have tried uninstalling and wiping all settings and reinstalling it but still does it. It is really strange to say the least. I have not installed any system programs recently so that is not a problem. The problem only started 2 days ago and I have not had any windows updates in that time running Windows 7 64 bit. System has been restarted as well just to see if that would help.

That looks pretty normal to me. Your video card has 2 different 2d modes. It looks like it is jumping back and forth between 2d mode and low power 2d mode depending on load.

It was on idle on both situation. Do you have a GTX780Ti ? because is doing it only with that card not with my GTX780.

Define idle. Just having your browser minimized in one instance and closed in the other instance will make a huge difference.
Uninstall both programs and select not to save profiles, restart your computer. Install one and check with no other programs open. Uninstall it seldcting not to save profiles, restart your computer. Install the other one and check again with no other programs running. Compare.

I submit to Jacob the problem for investigation and waiting for a response from him. I want to know if there is others guys that have the same problem with there GTX780Ti ?

Did you uninstall both, not save profiles, restart, and install only one and check again? If you don't uninstall, not save profiles, and reboot between video card replacements, it's anyones guess what will work or not work.

aldjeron HELP! Whatever you did on this release prevents me from underclocking my gpu's I have a motherboard that overclocked the gpus and causes them to shut down. Been like this since day one, the only way to prevent it was to underclock them by 100 MHz. This new release prevents me to go below default values. This is really annoying - I have no idea why they would feel the need to restrict *underclocking* :(

Does anyone have a safe place to download this older version from? I'm not sure why EVGA can't still offer it :p

i have the newest version installed, and precision keeps freezing up the computer requiring a hard reset. Every couple days or 3 days this happens. I run my computer 24/7 for folding purposes so to have my brand new build freezing up like this doesnt work for me. any ideas? I dont think i set it to log but i just did so, so maybe next time it freezes i can get a log. I cant click to see what the problem is as well, the whole rig freezes.

I certainly hope so. I recently started having a lot of system hangups and I've been trying to figure out why everything suddenly went unstable on me (I can only play Hawken for a grand total of 10 minutes before my entire PC locks up). As far as I can tell, it comes down two programs: Asus' AI suite 3 and it's subset DipAwayMode, and EVGAPrecision. After doing some digging, it appears that DipAwayMode doesn't get along very well with EVGA Precision, as part of the AI Suite program has some low-level GPU monitoring to determine voltages, even if the program itself isn't set to monitor GPU usage. I'm going to do more stability testing sans Precision, but I'm kinda worried about my GPUs getting too hot. If there is an update, I hope they're not waiting for MSI's exclusivity rights for the RSST server to expire...we'd be waiting almost a full year for an update.
