I know I was having troubles with the right thickness thermal pads so I think something isn't touching enough as the stock pads are 2.85mm and putty

I think imma hold off on playing with it until my optimus waterblock comes in..... but I can tell you the core runs much cooler with the thermal grizzly extreme lol.... ya the 100 bucks a tub stuff.... the core is slower at heating up but also cools down so much faster as well

If I understood correctly the fact of completely bypassing the resistance of the PCIE slot with a wire, let the card take the watts it needs without exceeding 80W? Self-regulation? I do not understand too much, we read everywhere that it should not exceed 120W but the fact of the total shunt should normally result in no regulation outside the if.
The card won't exceed 120W through the PCIE port if the other shunts don't have a low enough resistance, so the 8 pins aren't allowed to exceed a certain amount, because regardless of how much you shunt PCIE, there's still a ratio involved. From what I've seen, usually the shunt with the highest resistance winds up determining what you can draw, with some sort of balancing going on with the others. In fact, if you shunt PCIE with so little resistance that it winds up reporting 10W at load, while the 8 pins report 100W, you're *still* going to throttle via 'PWR' limit, because the gap between PCIE and 8 pins is too high! So the SRC (most likely it comes from the SRC) triggers a throttle flag. We already saw this on Dante'afk's shunt mod when he shorted the -top- of the stacked PCIE slot shunt (an 8 mOhm shunt stacked on the default 5 mOhm) with solder, which literally brought down the resistance of the entire PCIE slot shunt down to <2 mOhms. Since slot shunt is also linked to MVDDC and SRC, this triggered an artificial throttle flag, because the 8 pins were reporting way out of balance now. So yes the shunts need to be balanced. The purpose of shorting everything with 10 mOhms, for example, except the PCIE slot shunt with 15 mOhms instead, is so that you still gain power, but now the PCIE slot will throttle you when it reaches 79.9W, while staying below 120W real power draw for the fuse, while the other shunts can draw what they need (but still PCIE slot will be the limiter).

drunknfoo Btw the shunt in the mid front assuming src, does also show continuity to the pcie..
Ok, so SRC is linked to all the 8 pins and PCIE slot, then? That makes sense. MVDDC is linked to PCIE (I already know that) but is MVDDC linked to SRC or any of the 8 pins?
Found your post:
Based on continuity...
Very top is pin 1 Left 2 in the 'group of 4' is to pin 2 Right 2 in the 'group of 4' is to pin 3 Mid bottom is src directly associated with some but not all (i cant recall, definately pin 3 and maybe pin 2 and pcie) youd need to check to confirm...
So it looks like MVDDC is linked to PCIE Slot and SRC is linked to everything...
Not sure mvvd or src... Just assuming src... Shunting the ftw is extremely odd especially when looking at gpuz, random restarts causes the readings to show the lowet multiplier readings, other times itll read as if it wasnt shunted to begin with... It was frustrating and going forward only focus on power bar readings comparing before n after 1 shunt at a time for the ftw All other cards i shunted for the 30series behave as intended on gpuz W T F This said, i should mention, one behavior i did notice, focusing on power pin 3 last, it appears after this is shunted, all readings on gpuz will start to report as one would expect... (Make any sense?) /Shrug

slovak_killer Did the shunt mod today, first we tried only 8pins shunt mod, still got PWR perfcap even when reading very low values, after that we tried shunt modding also PCIE, this fixed the card and never saw PWR perfcap again, unfortunately this is only possible fix. On the screenshot u can see full load timespy run 2100mhz, PCIE readings maxed out at 17W and some rails even bugged out at 0W. Can confirm now card can full boost, no downclocking or undervolting, EVER !
whats the point of this mod??
To VOID your warranty ... but allow more power to flow ...
Its total shunt?!
shunt mod that allows 1000W power limit. BTW great moderator COOL GTX, I wouldnt have to void my warranty (with shunt mod) if your great brand was properly supporting XOCers by sending them stuff needed for LN2, maybe like proper bios ? So please use your words wisely.

Seems like that was exactly what he/she did (using wise words). What you are advocating is not any better than what that knucklehead Framechaser guy did. If you were looking for such a card, then why not get the Kingpin... I wonder just what percentage of users actually use LN2 anyway? Extremely low I would guess. Maybe .0001 percent.

Your loop hole is that I actually tested the card for weeks with other possible solutions other than just straight up shunting PCIE. What u dont understand is that there is ftw3 xoc bios, so why not help fellow XOCers who couldnt get KP card hmm ? Problem of this moderator is that hes having fun about my warranty but he doesnt realise the shunt mod I did is not just for 1000W xoc power limit but also to fix the card in general, my card has (had) hardlimit at 400W and wouldnt pull more in 3D (timespy etc) which is under spec of this card set by EVGA. And lastly, youre saying LN2 XOCers are very small minority right ? Then whats the problem with helping few guys with FTW3s on ln2 :) Im not saying they should share LN2 1000W bios for all ftw3 users, Im ready to sign NDA and not share that bios

Think you are better off just shunting if you havent already if going ln2, bearded lhardware (joe) stated he even went back to the strix for a time cause the bios he received was limited (he had a production ftw3)... (I assume problematic) I sent a request for the said bios, i got sent a varient of a 450w and couldnt help but lol

I rly dont wanna do any brand comparing but honestly I wanna know whats the problem ? I still like EVGA, X299 Dark is great mobo, my pots are all Kingpin (F1, tek9 fat) but rly wanna know why I cant get NDA stuff for my FTW3.. During 2080Ti era I PMed MSI Rep that I want NDA stuff for my MSI Card and I got back special LN2 bios, abx, ln2 guide without any hassle... Why cant EVGA do the same, I wonder, I rly only need that 1000+W bios nothing else.

came home and took apart the card again... beginning to be pro at this! But found some of the thermal pads not compressing well... added a .5mm strip and test ran time spy..... 460w ish average and was able to get a 170mhz 1200mhz in Port but my frames are bouncing 10fps at least... sigh just gonna give up and wait for my blocks....

slovak_killer I did a video of my shunt modding if someone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ9Ikwuashk
This is a VERY GOOD video!!! I think I understand exactly what you do here. 1) add flux on top of original shunt silver edge conductive points. 2) use solder wire, with solder gun, melt and it will go onto the flux, making the higher bump for the new shunt to sit on. 3) Apply flux on new solder joint on each end. 4) apply new shunt on top of the flux/solder joint. 5) hold the new shunt in place with Engineer tweezers and melt the solder under it so it attaches to the solder/flux. I have a question for you, Slovak What was that material you used to "Wipe" the shunt and PCB, with the Q-tip, after the soldering? Also, How did you solder the shunt that was right next to the giant choke, and the fuse? There seems to be so little room... Is it the flux that helps?

Thanks ! I will copy your steps into my comments so people can also use "written" form if u dont mind. 1) My friend used medical alcohol (isopropyl), its non conductive, it will clean dirt and evaporate quickly :) 2) Yes, FLUX, FLUX FLUX !!! When youre soldering u always want to use flux which will help a lot, u wont have short/bridges between close objects.

15200 something using the strix bios, cant remember the shunt combo i used at that time, i think it was something like 8mohm for the top 5, 5mohm for the one at lower bottom, and either a 10 or 8 mohm for pcie. i since changed the card to 5mohm for all, and pcie swapped and stacked 4mohm and 20mohm Haven't benched much at all lately cause lacking a water block, the strix score was with the power slider down i think maybe -3 or -4% (can't really remember) case has mini ac (disconnected pump/rad) idle internal temp of about 14c, liquid metal is now on the stock air cooler. Regardless, temps and vrel/op is limit. (when the card decides to act properly)

My card is a Taiwan card, but it draws over 500W sustained in almost every application with the XOC Bios. This screenshot was from playing Metro Exodus and it peaked at 538W and averaged around 505W in gameplay. All three Pcie power connectors were drawing over 150W and the Pcie Slot was drawing around 80W.
This here is proof that there is a huge problem with a certain run of their cards.

drunknfoo yes tinning is always good practice tin all contact points, place resistor in position, i apply thin layer of smd solder paste then tap paste with iron creating the joints
is "tinning" the same thing as flux?
tinning is a term for prepping the contacts or coating with solder prior to connecting the joint. As well tinning the iron or head is also good practice.
