Edit: Turns out I can't post links?

Anyway, I am wondering if someone from EVGA can verify which EVGA 780 backplate is right for a 6GB GTX 780 w/ ACX cooler?

I am thinking it's the one with the models 3783/3784 from the store, but the 6GB version has a different model number (3787 for the SC version).

I had the 3gb version and upgraded to the 6gb. The card is exactly the same, just has more memory. My gtx780 backplate i had for my 3gb fits perfectly on my 6gb

Thanks SkylerJ. Do you have an EVGA backplate, and if so, can you link which one?

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of getting as well.

Congrats on the 6GB version, will order mine in a few weeks (I still have ~50 days to do it). It should be great until the 980 is released.

Have you installed any games yet?  Strangely it seems like benchmark software doesn't cause the issue but games do.  If there was no SLI profile available, could that be the culprit?  A hard sytem reboot seems like a pretty serious result from simply not having a profile.  Shouldn't the computer simply use just 1 card if SLI is not supported by the driver..?

**Edit/Update**

Ok this is incredibly annoying and stupid.  I can run Benchmarks like Heaven, Valley and 3DMark Firestrike and SLI is definitely working, but the instant I try Metro, the computer hard reboots itself.  My 3DMark score went down about 1000 points using those UK drivers also, but it makes no sense that it can properly use SLI, and even run Heaven/Valley @1440p and max settings which should be using pretty darned close to 3gb or more memory, yet ANY game I try to run in SLI causes a hard reboot.  I'm calling EVGA again.. this is ridiculous.

**Another Update**
If I run Heaven/Valley in SLI @4k, it will eventually trigger the crash.  I think it has to build up to a certain amount of memory being used to trigger the crash event.  Games are still insta-crash if they utilize SLI and lots of memory.  I was able to play heavily modded HL2 @1440p for like 5 minutes in SLI without a crash, but the moment I try Metro it's insta-crash.

I am replying rather late, as I have been very busy, but wanted to put in my reply to your query. You probably have already exchanged, changed, or figured something out at this point.

Fortunately (for me), I can not duplicate the crashing issue. Single screen and surround configurations have been tested. Mutiple hours of gaming with the VRAM shown as dancing between 4000-4500 and not a hint of issue. This is with the 337.50 and, most recently, the 337.88 drivers.

Hey guys,

I just started the Step-UP program. I'm excited to get my second gtx 780 6GB card (Have one already) - I'm curious as to why people are saying you don't need a 6gb card at 1080p resolution.

I have one already (EVGA 780 6GB) and in Watch_Dogs - I am using between 3.5GB and 4.2GB of Vram - Ultra Settings 1080p...

So it IS USING more than 3GB... So why do people say it is overkill / no game will ever use more than 3GB...

Because Watch Dogs is in need of a serious patch. The game is not near optimized, surely you have heard this already. Its been all over the internet since the game launched. :)

I have heard that 'patches' are needed, however optimizations are going to change vram usage?

Only reason I ask is because they've said that about other games and even Elder Scrolls Online uses 2.7G vram

I didn't know elder scrolls online uses that much ram? And yeah after patches/optimization what ever you want to call it, the game should use ram more efficiently. So they say...

EDIT: Discussion is all over this forum, just look down the list on this 700/TITAN section.

Yeah sorry - my original post was to just say that there are games out there that are using more and more vram now. So 6GB is usable.

It's not overkill. Some of the newer games will need more than 3 gigs. If a gamer isn't a hardcore gamer, then 3 is enough.

That's what I wanted to hear. I have just been reading about how 6GB will NEVER come in play, and cards aren't even fast enough yet to reach 6GB and perform at that speed. Blah Blah Blah...

All I know is - Watch_Dogs went from unplayable to playable with the same card - just with higher Vram on it.  SO I'm happy.

I have the 780 3gb SC with acx version. Is it worth $30 to step up for this?

single gpu setup.  no.
multi gpu setup. maybe.
resale.  yes

what about all this talk i am hearing about that even at 1080p single monitor very near future games will need more than 3G's of vram?
I was going to buy a 780 6g but they arre out of stock so i went with a FTW 3g.  having second thoughts about this decision.
thinking maybe i should have waited for the 6g for $30 more

From experience. 780 Gtx 6gb gave better gameplay over the 780 3gb single monitor on 1080p. First hand experience.

Yes but as you see there are MANY MANY other very very PASSIONATE and "knowledgeable" hardcore gamers out there that believe no game will ever reach the 3GB limit and they will rip you apart for purchasing a 6GB card "especially" on the 780 because it's no TI model, and the gpu will "never" keep up and be able to utilize 6GB of vram, so essentially it's just a "big" money pit.

My opinion. My real world Experience. Not ever owning a Titan ( like the big dogs ) or any 1000 dollar card. I can tell you. I had a gtx 780 3GB card. Watch_Dogs stuttered and immediately used 3GB of Vram, and ran poor.  So I got the 780 6GB card. Played Watch_Dogs - Stuttering is ALMOST gone. 3.8 - 4.2 VRAM used a lot of the time - Game runs perfect.

I am one to ALWAYS need my games to run 60FPS all the time or it feels "laggy".. With the 780 6GB card - it runs average 45 fps - it doesn't feel laggy AT ALL. Feels smooth as butter. I'm happy with the 6gb card. Even after spending another 50 dollars to step up and ship. I'm happy with it. My game experience is on another level with Watch_Dogs now that I traded the 3GB card for the 6GB card.

Once again, everyone will argue you silly in this and how it can't happen and blah blah blah. I can only tell you what my 4 year old rig is doing and performing STILL on "next-gen" games today.

Hope this helps a little.

Proof 3GB+ of Vram is not a mistake?

Watch Dogs graphics technical director Sebastien Viard has sent out a series of tweets briefly explaining what could be causing the performance issues and offering recommendations for dealing with them. "Watch Dogs can use 3+ GB of RAM on [next-gen] consoles for graphics, your PC GPU needs enough VRAM for ultra options due to the lack of unified mem[ory]," he wrote in one tweet. For those with problems, hesuggested, "If you experience lag/stutter on a fast PC, try to lower one of those settings to reduce the GPU VRAM usage: texture quality, AA, resolution."

The real good reason to go 6G if for no other is that it is only $40 more than the 3G one.
that alone makes me say yeah go 6g and i would have had they had one in stock.
heres my bottom line, even IF i never needed all 6g's of vram i LIKE the idea of knowing it is there if i ever do need it. especially for only $40 more.
you said you gaming of WD is better and i believe you and i think overall you did the right thing by getting a 6g from a 3g.
Hey you are happy and not complaining right?

MY EXACT reasoning. And if I choose to purchase a second one... I will NEVER be limited by RAM - You can never double your speed on RAM - You are stuck with 6GB even if you have 2 6GB cards. But you can always add more horse power behind your GPU with a second card.

And yes. I love the card. VERY impressed with it. Why not? $40 bucks to "future" proof your Vram?

It sounds really awesome. But a few questions.

780ti sc, deserves a 780ti sc 6gb step up no ?.

And what is a person supposed to do, while the graphics card is stepping it up ? i mean we are talking about weeks and weeks without a graphics cards ?. At least if you live outside the US.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure you dont send your old card until the step up card is ready to be shipped
EVGA gets the old card and then sends you the new step up one, so you are looking at
about 5 days total which to someone who uses their PC everyday to game is a long time i suppose?
it would be to me.

Ahh well at least its not weeks. but yeah its still far to long. i mean only serious people and serious gamers have a serious card like that. and  5 days :P. Shame there isnt a better way. where they send the new card. and you have the old card over to the delivery man when he hands you your new card at the door. Now that would be something i was interested in.

Nah they are goin to want to get back the original card first. kind of the same as any exchange with a store
where it is online and not in person.

The step up webpage says "sign ups are closed", did the program just end? I have a month old 780 GTX Classified and would like to swap it out for a 6Gb card.

You have to go through the 'My products' page and then selects the set up from there. In the list of cards you can set up to, the 6GB is in the list.

Ah, groovy, thanks, I'll have to dig out the serial number of the card tonight.

Is there any way to get one of these now. I'm not looking to step up I'm just looking to buy a 780 6gb. Amazon is sold out along with newegg and EVGA says auto notify. I see the Zotac cards are available but at a higher cost and also not EVGA. Anyone have a link to a reputable online store in the U.S.? I would like to buy.
