Sorry for reviving a super old thread, but I just noticed the same black tape on my 1060 SC also.

Question: if I remove the black tape on my 1060 SC to improve thermals, will that void my warranty?

Possibly. I'd ask evga support that question just to be 100% sure.

The tape is quite sticky but it can be reused if taken off very delicately and placed on a piece of wax paper.

The tape is there most likely to keep air pressure / flow over the VRMs are the rear of the card near the ports. Since the 1060 SC doesn’t have any temp sensors on the VRMs this was impossible to test for me.

Do your own testing run a thermal stress test for GPU temp with fan speed constant with the tape and then without the tape. Post your results.

CPU: i5-7400 @ 3.0 Ghz stock 3.5 Ghz Turbo
MOB: Acer Aspire TC-780 (H110 Chipset prebuilt bleh)
RAM: 16GB DDR4 2400MHz (Kingston)
GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC
PSU: EVGA B3 550W
SDD: Micron 256GB SSD + 512GB WD Blue

As I noted earlier in the thread, we placed the tape there to keep the airflow over more of the card, rather than allowing it to bleed away.  I always appreciate that members are willing to spend the time to go through and do their own testing, but our VGA team also has a much larger sample size showing that the acetate tape results in better thermal performance for this particular model.

@slurm1 - I'd recommend keeping the tape on, as you won't see a performance increase in the card by taking it off.  However, you can usually improve the GPU temp by replacing the thermal paste, as adelli noted here in the thread.  Taking the tape off, on the other hand, would likely increase the VRM and memory temps.

@EVGATech_LeeM, thanks for the recommendation and info! I'll try the thermal paste route.
