Here is a picture of my sr-2 in a coolermaster Cosmos S:

It needs a lot of cable management, but everything is working well so far, and I had almost no trouble installing the board into a cosmos s. All you need to do is to double up on the standoffs where the board begins to dip.
I have a thread on Overclock.net about this as well, if anyone is interested.
attached are two shots, one with just the board in and another with the finished product.

Does anyone know the release date for LianLi PC-V2120B??

According to this Lian-Li page release date is October 20, 2010.

http://lian-li.com/v2/tw/...image/v2120/flyer.html

PC-V2120X

But I got PC-V2120S (silver). I just found out that PC-V2120X is fully anodizing both inside and outside of the case.

cage

Impossible, Where did you buy it?

Sorry for the delay as I went oversea for holidays. I got it directly from Taiwan via the NZ supplier who pushed Lian Li into production, which he did. It seems I was the first one to get it, seriously.

Really? There is a online shop, or not?
I'm very interested in this chassis.

You can contact Ming on sales@overclockers.co.nz or I just put my silver case up for sale on the other thread if you're interested but one of the dual Noctuca DH-14 heatsinks that cannot clear the long bar where the video cards holds. There are two things that need to remove which are a 140mm internal fan which attached the wall that has alot of holes. Both of them must remove otherwise it won't slide the motherboard tray in with SR-2. That I did, it fits perfectly.

You need low profile heatsink unless you're into watercooling then it's fine that you can use that bar but that fan and the wall had to be rmeoved though.

You don't have to use the video card support bar in the PC-V2120.  If anything it's a gimmick.  But a cool gimmick.

Yeah I know but i am picky :(...I guess I should get used to it. I wouldn't buy Lian Li again for misleading or marketing deception like you said it's a gimmicky!

Guys, just friendly warning about Lian Li V2120 for heatsinks. Don't buy Noctuca DH-14 because you cannot slide it out easily as the top one need to take it out before sliding it out so it's alot of hassles!

Thermalight Venomous X would be suitable. I think I will sell/trade my noctuca ones.

Thanks but any alternatives?
I don't like Thermalright...It's really good the Venomous?
I think that the fan isn't included...

No problem, Eduard31.

On alternative heatsinks, you can find very similar to Venomous X in term of shape and size. I just wish that Lian Li should fix that watercooling holes should be included with the removeable motherboard tray so we wouldn't have any problem with Noctua heatsinks.

That's correct about Venomous that has no fan but according to the result (can't remember the link) that Noctua DH-14 and Venomous X are very close in term of temperature, so it's not much difference. I chose Noctua because it has fans lol.

Just find the right heatsinks in rectangualr shaped size like Venomous if you wanted a V2120 case. Mine is just beautiful in silver.

http://forums.evga.com...p;m=411784&mpage=1

see the picture where Venmous X's installed, look at the back of the case where the fan mounted above the watercooling holes (not part of the removeable motherboard tray), that's where it slide out and in easily if you get similar rectangular shaped heatsinks horizontally only.

Damn this is fail for finding a proper SR-2 case!!!

I'm grabbing two xeon 5680's this week and the SR-2 (24gb ram to boot)

I'm down to a couple of options after reading this thread over the last few hours.

Cosmos S: or see if i can fit it into my current Cosmos 1000
Lian Li V2120: wait an entire month before I can case the bugger in one of these
Pinnacle 24 CYO: there's nothing on their site about this being suitable for HPTX but I saw somewhere it is... can someone verify that?

lastly,

Get a custom case from Spotswood (and probably wait a month too)

I don't much like the danger den stuff cause they're bloody HUGE.

Anyone got anything to comment on my choices? suggest anything else to look at?

Cheers!

Hi Danny,

can you post some pics of your case and setup, please
I am thinking/hoping to get this case too, but will air-cool, and I was thinking of the same coolers as you have now. so maybe its back to the drawing board.

thanks

Yeah I will, but I think I may have a solution.

http://www.prolimatech.co...cooler/armageddon.html

This fan is very slimmest than any heatsinks on the market. I could get dual fan installed. I need to find the right dual fans (2 x 25mm).

Will update with photos and setups soon.

The pinnacle 24 will house the SR-2 with room to spare.  Pics commig over the w/e.  I'm playing around with one now.  Got bored again.  I also have a pedastal 24 arriving tomorrow. :)  More rads or a phase change unit or two will end up in there.

LOL you beat me to it, I haven't worked on my Cosmos since weeks ago dammit... Does the cosmos S has the perforations on top for a 3x120 or a 4x120 RAD?
Thx

3x120mm. And I had to do very little modification to get the board to fit perfectly. Its a very simple modification, if you are interested. Though, as of your last pictures it looked like you had dismantled the case in its entirety. As a matter of fact, this is what it looks like now, after a great deal of cable management:

Hi!

I had another big board before the SR-2, which used the more "receded" portion of the motherboard plate, in fact that part already had standoff threads and I did use triple standoffs to bring the mobo to the normal height. However going more to the front of the case comes this angled part where the cable holes are, and the height once the inclination ends is a little higher than the main plate:

I guess I could have put the mobo in a slight angle hehe (I had to that once with a mobo that had a heatsink behind the CPU and I had to place a waterblock with another plate, the mobo ended having single standoffs near the back and double standoffs on the opposite edge) using nuts and insulation to separate the mobo from the metal, but since I disliked the lower portion of the Cosmos 1000's bay area I decided to dismantle it completely and make it the same as the cosmos S, and on the way fixing the mobo plate issue. Since I just work on the darn thing from time to time, I see a lot of mods in the meantime haha so I keep considering more modifications to the case, which further delays its completion :P. I plan all this in solidworks so its kinda fun and "addictive" to see how it will turn up...

If you already have photos of the minor mods you did to fit the SR-2 it'd be interesting to see anyway :)

Thanks!

Edit: I saw your other thread and saw the double standoffs, however I can't see what did you do to the rightmost edge of the mobo, doesn't the mobo touch the horizontal part? The upper view is like this:
                  ____
_________|       \_

Does it touch the red portion :)?

Hey Starfish,

what modifications have you done to the Cosmos S? Can you maybe provide some pics with a better quality? What have you used to mod the Cosmos S? Any special tools? Any more information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 Compatible Chassis 2010/09/29 15:25:35 (permalink)
Yeah, I should have better pics up in the next few days. There really were no special tools. The extent of the mod was making sure the board was supported as well as not touching the metal on the right side of the board.  Just like geort45 said, or rather displayed, with his diagram, you double up on standoffs on the right side of the case. I used the standard standoff spots which I believe were for E or xl-atx boards on the rightmost part of the motherboard tray.
So the left side of the board would have regular standoffs screwed in the case. Then in the middle I used a few layers of the double sided foam tape to support the few places where there were not holes for stand offs, and on the right side of the board there were double standoffs used, which made the board clear the divot which is in the case from the motherboard tray to the drive bay area.

Nope, the sr-2 clears anything that it may have touched normally. The standoff trick works wonders on this case and will probably help in your case (no pun intended) and for many others as well.

I would just like to add that the Lian Li PC-V2120 is now for sale on NewEgg for $399. What are everyone's thoughts on this chassis? I think it is my favorite HPTX chassis that is currently available.

It's a fine case, but $400 for a mass-produced aluminum box is highway robbery. It doesn't have any special features that justify the price, and while the SR-2 fits in it, there is so little extra room around the motherboard area that there is basically no room for cable management.

Cable management shouldn't be too bad, there is some space in front of the motherboard tray (behind the drive bays).  The PC-V2120 looks like an amazing case... great air cooling, great water cooling, Lian-Li build quality and tool free features.  A bit overpriced maybe, it's priced next to many Mountain Mods cases.  But compare it to tower ATX cases in that price range and it is clearly the best one... you have the Lian-Li X series which are nice but small in length so limited to ATX motherboards and have no water cooling support.  Airflow is good though.

I don't like the V2120.. You know, I've had the V2110 before, a great case, even as the silencing mats werent the best ones.

It had innovative features and worked like a charm.

The V2120, same as the "TYR"-Cases, is in my eyes "modern crap"... has some "features" like toolless design (hey, sorry, I want stable and trustproof screws, not plastic holders!), USB 3.0 over external loopback cable, ...

And some features of the V2110 which were great are missing..

Thats the reason why I bought the P80R, it's like a combination of the V2110 and the V2120 with a special design and some unique features. Still easy to mod and change, compared to some plastic bombers.

If the V2110 would have a fitting tray (and thats the main problem of that thing) without the need to basically cut off half the case for the SR-2, then I would still use it..

Well the TYR series are designed just for airflow it would seem.  Where do you see "plastic holders" on the PC-V2120?  It has thumbscrews for the expansion slots.  Thumbscrews for the motherboard tray.  The optical drive bay locks are aluminum with rubber anti-vibration padding.  But since these are only on one side of the case, you should use screws or thumbscrews on the opposite side.  The hard drive installation is tool free and has no plastic holders.  Just put four thumbscrews on the hard drive with anti-vibration pads (these are all included) and then slide it into the hard drive cage.  Even Lian-Li's hard drive trays on their cases that have them are aluminum.  Excellent tool free designs were screws are just unnecessary.

You can't blame the case for the USB 3.0 cable routing.  Current motherboards only have USB 3 ports on the I/O shield plate.  So you have to get the cable to the I/O shield plate somehow!  You can use the expansion slot or one of the water cooling rubber grommeted holes.  The PC-V2120 should have the dual PSU mounting options that the PC-V2110 and PC-V2010 had though, which would probably allow that little hard drive cage to hold 4 instead of 3 hard drives.  Airflow is improved from the previous V series cases and it comes with support for a 360 radiator by default.  Not to mention you can easily use the front of the case for water cooling... just remove two thumbscrews, take out the hard drive cage and there you go, plenty of space.

The TYRs are a fail in my opinion.

You loose most of the room and balance of the case itself, its getting shorter and higher (not improving the standing stability either) and you can hardly change things to fit your needs (this thing is a BIG tower with not even the possibility to mount 2 x 5x3,5"-in-3x5,25"-HDD-Swapbackplanes..

Some of the "Toolless"-Designs are indeed out of aluminium, but still not half as reliable as screws.. Did you look on the aluminium switch-lock for the PCI Cards? Aluminium-rubber-Holder for PSU? HDD silencer fittings?

Sure, theyre nice for silencing and "quick removal" but seriously, if my tower weights 8 Kgs empty and 30 full, I wouldnt trust a little, "snapped in" aluminium bar to hold my watercooled GTX480 or 4Kg~ PSU. And if it breaks loose, the thing works exactly like a flipper ball. Destroying everything.

The Thumbscrews from the Lian Li Cases (I have them myself) are made out of Aluminium. And thumbscrews to screw a mainboard in position is a fingerbreaking task (even more on enthusiasts mainboards..). I don't trust the aluminium thumbscrews either - theyre not made out of 7075 Aluminium. ;) I change them against stainless steel screws, this way I can be sure, they keep the weighty things in place.

The HDD silencers and fan silencers are indeed a nice thing (theyre not "toolless" in my opinion because you still have to screw the "thumbscrews" with a driver instead of fingers to keep them in place), but before I move the rig I would still secure them with the additional third screws in the middle.. you wouldnt like your 6 x 2 TByte RAID6 bumping around in the case...

Dual PSU Mounting is a nice thing.. but I guess with this big of a mainboard tray its not easily possible (would mean bigger measures).

About the USB 3.0 Re-Routing: Dumbest thing ever imho. Who would attach a USB 3.0 device on the front of the case? Usually you attach like USB sticks, keyboards, USB-Headsets, Mp3-Players and such.. and the cheapest USB 3.0-SSDlike Memorystick costs more than a SSD those days..

There's no reason to attach external HDDs to USB 3.0, if the Rig has eSATA either.. sure, its "future-proof" but if you buy a $400 or more case, I guess you like the style.. and not some loopback-cables on the back.. (okay, I have one myself, too - for the soundcard, a HDMI Loop, but that thing has actually a daily function ;) ).

But anyways, I guess everyone has a different sight on those things. I have Lian Li Cases since alot of years and always liked the sleek, functional and timeless elegant lines and the perfect workmanship. Not "outstanding Features", "windows", "Glowing fans" or something like that.

Btw, this is probably the wrong thread for this discuss but it could still inform people interested in a case for the SR-2 about advantages and disadvantages. And don't take it as a attack, I'm just expressing my feelings about the way Lian Li goes.. the old way was better..

Re:EVGA Classified SR-2 Compatible Chassis 2010/10/08 11:12:18 (permalink)
If anyone is interested, I managed to fit my SR-2 into a Lian-Li PC-71 with a few small easy mods (I have no practical skills in life).  It looks like it will fit 3 VGA if you desire, and the fourth could be done with further work.  Fancy cooling and other stuff I don't know about, I'm happy running with quiet air coolers.  It's not nearly as pretty as some of the mods people are making, but it is quick.

I went the 71 route as I already had the case, it looks beautiful and the pc-80 which officially supports the board is ugly, $100+ more expensive in Aus and often a few weeks between order and delivery.  Mountain Mods and other brands are non-existent over here (as far as I know).

The trick to fitting is to remove the bottom case cross bar which is L shaped and prevents the motherboard being fitted to the plate.  The six rivets that hold this bar to the front/back of the case and the plate can be removed easily with a drill.  I then stood the bar near vertically behind the motherboard plate to provide it some support push support (note the plate is still attached to the case on two sides (top and back) with multiple screws and rivets).  This bar is longer than the case height so 'friction' joints can be used when standing it up.  A bit of string ties it nicely through holes in the plate and the now vertical bar to provide pull support, or if want you could put through a bolt and nut after making a hole with a drill and let it take some motherboard weight through shear.  Mod can be completely undone by replacing the drilled out rivets with some small nuts and bolts from the hardware store.

A better option, but more work, would be too remount the bar horizontally across the case, but down at the base where the SR-2 hangs to.  A new motherboard plate would go great too, but it’s all too much work for me.

Have tried to upload picture but loader isn't working for me today. (firefox 3.6.10,  pic size <500kB)
Edit:  Reboot, retry, it's the windows way

Total waste of money now that the PC-V2120 is out.  And EisWolf, nothing is stopping you from using screws on the PC-V2120.
