Yep, i'm assuming the price will be steep for these CPU's :) For anyone on a budget the E5-2620 can be had for around 350 EUR per CPU which isn't too steep! Hopefully the ivy bridge Xeons will have a similarly priced lower end Xeon too. :)

I checked for 8 core E5-2670's, wich run at 2.6 Ghz and up to 3Ghz with turbo boost, and they're still 1500$ a pop...Add the 700$ for the board and it's a painfull 4000$, wich i might get a couple hundred Mhz from the little overclocking the board might provide, since it isn't coming from the Xeon CPU's...

This is why I hope the SR-X supports ES chips they tend to be cheaper. Ivy bridge-EP might still be unlockable down the road.

I'll still buy the board itself, but hold on the CPU purchases for the time being and see how things develop there, especially with ivy bridge E possibly being released by late this year or early next year.

I guess we will know if Ivy Bridge EP is overclockable once Intel starts shipping ES1 silicon to the OEMs, and Coolaler gets hold of one of them :) The alleged Ivy Bridge EP screenshots that were posted some weeks ago are clear fakes. Although they originated from coolaler forums they are not posted by coolaler, but by some forum member. One thing is for sure - Ivy Bridge EP is going to have some pretty impressive TDP figures - so if Intel decides to allow overclocking, it would be absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, because of this reason alone (potential to overclock) I doubt Intel is going to allow this - as steep overclock of the Ivy Bridge EP would endanger some of the future Ivy Bridge EX sales - and today there are already use-cases outside of typical "enthusiast" crowd that are actually relying on overclocked iron (low latency trading, for example). In any case, I think SR-X is a good purchase for people looking for high performance computing, especially for those who need memory bandwidth due to quad-channel memory support. Put compatibility with the future Ivy Bridge EP to the mix, and this looks like a very sweet platform for the next 2-3 years. Unfortunately, current price of SB-E and overclock limit is probably going to significantly decrease the appeal to the typical extreme gamer/overclock/folding crowd.

psyq321 One thing is for sure - Ivy Bridge EP is going to have some pretty impressive TDP figures... It is a just category so multiple processors can apply for the same power and cooling ratings, making it easy for the OEM cooling companies and the customer buying dozens or hundreds at once and don't have to change the cooler for every CPU upgrade-- TDP ratings aren't actual per CPU. Xeon E5-2687W isn't actually dissipating 150W of heat full load, it just doesn't qualify for 135W TDP in worse case senario and thus lumped into the next category. If you scale down the die of the 8-core to 6-core, then all the i7-3900's must be in 115W TDP, not 130W. But that is because all extreme edition consumer have been 130W TDP since before Core 2. Intel isn't obligated to adjust the TDP unless the market demanding a particular part doesn't want to pay too much on power and cooling meant for a higher rating against another processor competitor, i.e. an AMD counterpart in the same rating. In otherwords, Intel can and will lump Ivy-EP into the same categories as Sandy-EP regardless of frequency or cores.

For me, i'm already using a pair of X5650's at 4 Ghz on my current SR-2, and we still see X5600 chips at 1200 to 1500$( X5680's and X5690's), and the highest overclock on water cooling might be 4.5~4.6Ghz wich is only 500~600Mhz more than i have now, so it isn't a huge performance increase and still a lot of money. So with the above in mind, getting the SR-X and waiting for the 10 core ivy brige E's, wich i'd get a pair off the bat even if i know they'll be expensive, and even assuming they too can't be overclocked, moves me from a 12 core/24 thread setup to a 20 core/40 thread setup.....Then add that ivy bridge E should be a good 30% faster at the same clock speed as westmere chips even if they had the same amount of cores(they have 4 more per die), and it's a pretty big increase in CPU power overall, at least in applications that leverage all those cores.

@ lehpron, While it is true that the TDP is just a ballpark figure used mainly for thermal design of the entire system (OEM) or a cooling part ("enthusiast" market), it does tell much more if you are seeing significant jumps in capabilities fitting into the same thermal bracket. For example, significant frequency jump for a base TDP and/or core count, etc... If you are getting this in the "tick" generation it tells quite a lot about the process achievements.

Intel have new CPU on 22nm. The dual processor Socket 2011 platform, the Xeon E5, is expected to receive the ten core 25 MB L3 (some sources mention 30 MB L3 but that doesn't seem likely as of now) cache Ivy Bridge EP part update, which should also bring around 15%-20% clock speed update. The 22 nm tri-gate process benefits for both power consumption and clock speed will help Xeon E5 solve the high-TDP problems that bothered it a little bit in the Sandy Bridge EP generation right now. In my mind, based on the power and performance gains assessment, I'd expect 2.4 GHz 10-core parts at the 95W TDP level, 3 GHz 10-core parts at the 130W TDP level, and 3.3 GHz 10-core parts at the 150W workstation SKU grade, all plus minus 100 MHz or so. link:

If the Xeon ivy bridge E chips can't overclock either, i'll have to bite the bullet and get the fastest 10 core versions and use whatever little bit of overclocking the board can provide, and i'm already setting aside money for it, but in the meantime the SR-2 is doing just fine..

Since the SR-X cannot be overclocked does that mean a single cpu could do better or same for say if I'm setting up a server for a online game. I'm looking to hold around 300 slots max on it. Most the spec's I've been looking at for servers that are running this game are using CPU : 2 x Xeon Quad Core 3.3GHz RAM : 12GB DDR3 (doesn't give detail on what motherboards or ram speed). I'm just wondering if I went with something like this if it would be overkill or if I could find something similar in speed on a single CPU motherboard since I know not all the servers that run this game are off a work station. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you

I think it terms of a single CPU server you'd indeed be better off running a single socket motherboard, Z77,68, X79, something along those lines rather than one CPU on an SR-X

i'd run a dual cpu on this motherboard. The question I was looking towards is how much of a difference is there going to be? I realize the amount of memory capability is dramatically different. But is there that much of a difference from using a dual cpu vs a single cpu thats being overclocked?

Not much difference, i'm not sure how many cores the server side of game hosting can physically make use of, if you can get ahold of that information then you're set because the answer becomes dead simple: If it's only able to make use of a low number of cores, then go for a single socket board; If it's able to make use of a higher numbe rof cores, say 12+ then a dual socket board will be more beneficial, even at lower clocks, than a single socket board with 1 cpu and a higher base/OC clock.

Hello. Seemingly, the EU department was a little faster adding this to the eu.evga.com site - but just wait (probably a couple of hours or less), its not worth buying it from the eu site, if you're located in the US - (€600 vs $650) plus probably a lot higher shipping charge ;-)
