Chip shortage ever ending?

People are saying 2-3 years. So if that is true we are in for about 4 more years. That said our demand for chips is going up each year naturally not counting things like the pandemic and mining. It is not looking good in the short run but they are making more chip foundries.

The majority of actual gamers are not buying these cards at those prices. There's only 2 types of people who buy them at that price:

1. Miners - They don't care about the cost because they are hoping to earn back what they dump into the cards

2. Rich parents of spoiled brats - "Honey just buy him the damn thing so he stops interrupting my sun bathing!"

I don't know why so many people assume that rich parents of spoiled brats are buying the scalped cards.  I've seen the same comments elsewhere.

I know plenty of gamers who got tired of waiting to finish their new build and gave in to scalper prices.  It was worth more to them to enjoy a new system and pay $1000-$1500 over MSRP for a new card than to wait until next year to buy a new card.  Especially when they were playing on 5+ year old systems.  In the U.S. plenty of gamers who were able to continue to work during the pandemic saved the money from their stimulus checks and used that to pay scalper prices of new RTX 3000 series cards.

In all fairness, if you're thinking rationally you're not gonna spend 1k+ on a component that is worth 400 tops. It's a terrible financial investment, akin to buying market stock at its all time high only to then lose massively in value overtime.

However that rationality can quickly go out of the window if you're a rich kid from rich parents.

I mean, especially that a lot of scalper buyers are either miners or people upgrading from perfectly good RTX 20series cards, there is seriously no reason to upgrade from one gen to the next unless you're being given money for free and can "afford" to spend it recklessly.

I wish websites would have better protection against bots, but at the end of the day as long as they sell their product i dont think they really care.

They raise the price because people will buy it. It's unfortunate but it's simple economics. More demand and not enough supply = raise prices.

Demand for silicon is ridiculously high and it takes up to 5 or so years to build a state of the art fabrication facility.  There are a few projects building these facilities in the states but won't be online for several years.

Doesn't matter at this point since they all saw this coming and now they can charge more cause of the slow down and high demand.  They can easily point the finger to covid but prior to covid, they weren't doing much or building facilities.  We complained why the flash chips/SSDs were still high in price imo.  Some companies decided to slow down production and kept it at the same price for the longest time. lol...can't make this stuff up.  Than a fire here, power out there (no power back up for a state of the art facility?)....oopsies, prices are coming up.  Again, this was all precovid mind you.

Even Intel thinks the global chip shortage could last years

The price of the 3080Ti made me now debate whether i would rather just get a 3090.  I guess others thought the same and scalpers are adjusting

All the government needs to do is put out an anti- GPU scalping law like ticket scalping and watch those GPU's plummet in price.

Idk man America runs on supply and demand. If what you wanted was the case, gas prices would never change based on supply. It's just business 101 tbh it sucks but it's the way it is.

Various tech sites say RTX 3000 series card prices from scalpers are dropping.  However, all of the recently sold RTX 3070's on eBay are still in the same $1200-$1500 range that they have been in for a month or more.  All of the RTX 3080s recently sold on eBay are in the $1900-$2300 range.  All of the recently sold 3090s are in the $2900-$3300 range.  I'm not sure why they think scalper prices are dropping when the sold items listing prices hasn't changed.
