So I've noticed in a few games lately that at random times during games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance and PubG my GPU usage drops to 15-25%. Frames down to 10. I've tried setting these games to high priority in task manager and best performance in Nvidia control panel, why is this happening at all? My cpu usage is always around 20-50%. i7 4930k, 32gb ram, 1080ti. Updated drivers and games. I'm completely at a loss. This has been going on for about a month now.

Probably the games that you are playing are poorly optimized. I know for a fact that PUBG is. I haven't played Kingdom Come, but I am pretty sure that I heard it is poorly optimized as well.

No doubt, but I've pretty much had 75 fps constant in KC:D, and about that in PubG. But the GPU "usage" has always been 85% or more. So reguardless of performance, it's the gpu not being used that's the problem. And I have no idea what changes could have caused this. But 20% usage and 10fps is making things unplayable.

Make sure your cpu isn't overheating.

Nope. Good temps. 30c-65 under load. All cores utitlied, none maxed out. 15-55% usage. Also GPU temps never go above 70c.

Could be a bad hdd/ssd. Do you have any others you could test the games on?

Yea it seems to happen with others too. Happened on Ghost Recon Wildlands, Steep, and Rocket League as well. My fps games I keep on my Samsung Evo 1tb ssd, and others on my WD Black 6tb. So different hard drives, same issue. This is maddening.

Is your cpu overclocked? If yes, reset it to default clocks and test again.

Not anymore. I've just ran with 4.6GHz since my mobo is getting older. Also as an update after DDU uninstalling/reinstalling drivers it doesn't happen as often. But the actual cause/solution is still unknown.

what drivers are you using. I noticed the latest nvidia drivers for me, having a hard time benchmarking as well as fps dropping in BF1 last night. maybe try to clean out drivers and re-install them maybe even roll back a set. See if that helps.

Latest Nvidia drivers were giving me issues to. I went back to 388.43 and everything is better.

So apparently updating drivers normally, either through Nvidia or GeForce downloads, even if I select clean install it does this. Every time I have to DDU uninstall, and reinstall drivers. But then it seems to fix it. Weird. I wish I knew the exact cause of this.

Probably a Windows or Nvidia issue... I have been using DDU in safe mode to clean everything out before updating new drivers. I never used to and everything was fine, but lately either Windows or Nvidia have been terrible and you almost have to every time. I also disable my internet connection before uninstalling the drivers (before going into safe mode to run DDU) and delete the folders in c > nvidia > display driver.

Windows 10 has been known to install older drivers at a later date after you have installed the latest ones.

Well I am still looking for a solution as I suffer from the same issue. I've just started playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider and I'm getting hard freezes every few minutes. As the freeze occurs the GPU usage cuts out and then recovers. For the last two months I have been playing AC Odyssey and do not have this problem with that game at all, but have then I get it in FFXV and WD2 also. It seems like it might be game dependent and maybe these games are disagreeing with something? I'm pulling my hair out over this.

This is what I’ve been experiencing in games except for the freezes. I thought it was limited to cryengine, go turn on OSD and turn on No load limit in sensor monitor and see if the game is showing a no load limit of 1 or a back and forth between power limit and no load limit.

Other things to note is I find gpu boost and FPS is foreground dependent where you need to be clicked on the game you’ll notice this in games in windowed mode where if you click off the game FPS drops, as does the GPU clock boost meaning fullscreen may be causing issues.

Make sure your gpu voltage curve is stable for any gpu overclock.

Fixed my issues. After using DDU I found that windows 10 build 1809 windows updates installs a earlier version of the display drivers from 2017 after you already go and install the 417.22 display drivers. I had to use DDU to prevent windows update from installing device drivers then reinstall 417.22 again. After that it seems to have fixed my issues.
