Can I use ECC memory with my x58 SLI e758 and a Xeon X5650? Don't care if ECC is actually enabled, just saw come good deals on ECC RAM

I really don't know but, most of the desktop mobo do not support ECC.

Might help if you mention the Specific MB in question

I'm leaning towards you'd have POST issues ..... just my gut check

    1) Ask the MB mfg

    2) Ask the RAM mfg

Maybe someone has already tried & is willing to share how it went ?

no, even though the xeon memory controller will support ECC the MB will not.

But would ECC ram be able to function as non ECC ram in this case?

Only if you can disable the ecc capability inside the bios, but since the board doesn't support ecc it most likey doesn't even have the option, so the answer would be no again.

i dont give one damn about the ECC functionally lol. all i care about is more ram for less $$$ and if that means losing ECC functionally then i dont really care about that at all. if  cheap ram works, fantastic, ill just give my 2x4gb sticks of desktop memory to my dad for his PC.

late reply, but i have an evga x58 e758 with a xeon l5640 in it and am running 3 x 4gb 1866mhz ecc unbuffered sticks of micron ram with no problems at all (running in non ecc mode).
runs fine- had to do a mod to motherboard to get cpu working tho as its a v1.0 board.
