Do I need to update BIOS settings when replacing my GTX 750 with 960?

I have a Dell Inspiron 660 which runs a GTX 750 SC, otherwise everything with the PC is untouched and stock.

The GTX 960 SC I ordered is on its way, and I was wondering, is it as simple as taking out my 750 and replacing it with the 960, or is there any additional things I need to do such as update BIOS settings or some software stuff.

Please let me know. I rather know about this beforehand, than on the day itself rush and find out the info.

Thanks!

    Hello himmatsj,

If the GTX 750 worked on that system, I would say just to sure to update the bios from dell website. Also when you have the new video card installed in your system, its recommend to uninstalled the previous drivers and reinstall the new drivers.

Ok, I actually have never updated BIOS before and that kind of interface seems scary to me.

Regardless, I should have asked, if the 750 SC worked with no issues, the 960 SC should work with no issues as well right?

The version of Inspiron 660 I have is with i5 3330 and 8GB RAM.

    Thanks!

If a GTX 750 worked then a GTX 960 should work too like KevinS said as long as your power supply is up to it and has the proper connectors..How many watts is the PSU and does it have the necessary connectors?..I see your board's only BIOS update is for Intel Management Engine anyway and that won't matter, so don't sweat it.

You should uninstall the Graphics Driver like he said too, but using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) will automatically do that for you and remove all traces of the GTX 750 from your system..Just choose the "Safe Mode (Recommended)" Launch option, then after your PC reboots into Safe Mode, choose "Remove Vulkan runtime" in the DDU Options menu (top left) and then the "Clean and Shutdown (For installing a new graphics card)" option..After shutdown, install your new card, startup, and then install the NVIDIA driver.

You can use the driver Express (Recommended) install or the Custom (Advanced) install to select only the optional driver components you need/want.

If I uninstall my driver, how can I see what's on my PC?

Also, last time I don't think I uninstalled.

Is it not enough to use the Nvidia uninstall option? I don't feel safe using additional programs.

You should just be able to swap video cards, let windows do its thing, reboot and be done. Re-installing drivers is only necessary if you have problems. Most suggest uninstalling the drivers before swapping to avoid issues.

Windows default driver will takeover until you install nvidia drivers. Nvidia regular uninstall option is fine. Most users recommend using DDU just to prevent any problems that may occur.

As stated above, yes, you can use the NVIDIA recommended uninstall/install/clean install methods..Or..Just plug in your new card and roll from there..No, you won't lose display on your monitor if you uninstall the graphics driver (link)..Using Display Driver Uninstaller will ensure a clean driver sweep where traditional methods might fall short and cause problems..DDU is thorough,  easy to use, and is widely accepted within the enthusiast community..You don't have to use it, but it will lessen the chances of possible problems relating to driver and settings leftovers..It may not be neccessary, but it would be best..More information can be found in the FAQs and Knowledgebase at the NVIDIA Support web page and the GeForce Forums.

I'm just a little afraid, some people on other pre-builts have issues with a GTX 960.

My UEFI is version 2.7. Is this enough for a GTX 960?

Worst case scenario, if it doesn't work, what should I do? Keep in mind I don't tinker much. Do explain in basic steps. Would it be difficult to correct the issue?

    Thanks!

If the 750 is working, then the 960 should be fine. Your system seems to have shipped with Win8.1, so it has a UEFI BIOS that will support the card.

Updating the BIOS on a Dell is quite simple. You can put your Service Tag into the support site, and it will show you any downloads or updates for your system. The BIOS updaters are a simple .exe. Close any open programs, and run the updater after downloading it to your desktop. It will update, then prompt you to restart.

If it fails, or you need further guidance, you'd need to contact Dell for support.

No, my Dell actually shipped with Windows 8, which I later updated to 8.1 and then 10.

I'm really nervous...the BIOS from the Dell website has been updated though.

Windows 8 or 8.1 support UEFI, so you're good there. If you're nervous about updating the BIOS, you can try the 960 first, and if it doesn't work, then run the update.
