I need clarification - is it normal for a 1080FTW ACX 3.0 to reach 77C at 100% fan speed after a minute of gameplay? No matter what I play, I need to max the fans at 100% to stay below 80C.
This seems extremely abnormal to me. I have been in contact with my local retailer and they seem to think it's fine...

The card works but it sounds like there is a helicopter in the room whenever I game. I have installed the thermal pads, updated the bios and reapplied the paste twice... I can't help but think there is something wrong. It is also worth mentioning that I have a Corsair 760T so airflow isn't a problem. I read a dozen reviews before buying the card that recorded 75C but at around 50% fan speed - all of them praising how quiet the thing is.

What's the go? Am I crazy? I love the cards performance but these fans are driving me nuts.

I would say you either got some bad case cooling, or a card that needs replacing.
Try it with say your case side panel off and see what it does.
I have the original FTW and it is un-modded, still stock as it came. It has never seen 80c.

Edit: Now I do use Afterburner with a custom fan curve, and I game with a Rift so the fan noise is not a factor for me. But my card whilst gaming is generally in the low 60's C. But even before the Rift, it never really bothered me - but I certainly did hear them.

It kind of sounds like a bad thermal paste application. Do you have any spare paste by any chance?

If so, it would be a good idea to take 20 minutes and try changing it to see if it helps out. It is very easy to do.

Thanks for the replies!

I have tried it with the side panel off and it still stays that high. I have reapplied the paste twice - mind you both times it was with the same CoolerMaster paste. The temps and fans were still high when I received the card though.

Here is a picture of my case.

I borrowed a friends old 680 with a single fan blower for the day to see how it would perform... the card never passes 71C or 80% fan speed... something is definitely up.

I didn't think I was wrong - I'm trying to get my retailer to swap the card.

My 1080 FTW (ACX 3.0 without the new pads, etc) with +100 MHz gpu overclock (2050MHz effective while playing long sessions) and +200 Mhz mem overclock didnt pass 72 ºC with an aggressive fan curve of 90% at 70ºC and 100% at 80ºC.
My PC case is also much more full of cables and things than yours and has no watercooling on the cpu.

In short, yup, you need to get that card replaced.

PC component temps are relative to ambient room temp

What is your room temp ?

What is your CPU temp ?

GPU temp at idle and light non-game load - on the web ?

Looks like your fans are set up to: (what RPM are they set at - 100% ?)

2 Front 140mm - Blow In
1 Bottom 140? - Blow In
1 Back 140 - Exhaust
2 Top Rad - Exhaust

I own a Corsair 760 T, OK case for single ACX cooled GPU, stock fans are not the best for airflow but are quiet, with bright LEDs.

My 1 EVGA 1080 FE in a Cooler Master HAF case (fans 100%) that is still on stock cooler will stay below 60C with +200 MHz on the GPU, Folding around 90% GPU load 24/7 - room temp 19 C  (66 F)

So, my current room Temp = 19 C and GPU is 53 C = Delta T of 34 C ......... GPU currently 34 C warmer than the room air temp

Does sound like the heatsink is not fully in contact with the GPU - TIM or thermal pad placement issue ?

What kind of Temps before thermal pads were added ?

I am in an Australian summer at the moment so the room temp can get up to 27C, but I generally used the aircon while doing long gaming sessions.

That fan config is correct and yes case fans always running at 100%.

GPU temp at idle hangs around 40C with 50-50% fan speed.

I slowly and closely followed the thermal pad installation guide - I even reapplied the paste a second time when I thought I hadn't contacted it properly. The heatsink is huge so I'm not sure how it could be off.

Temps were always quite high even before the thermal pad mod. I remember the card reaching 85C after half an hour of the Witcher 3 so I used precision X to set a temp goal of 75C which in turn limited the cards power to 80%.

A friend has just sent me a log of his 1080FTW during a session of Overwatch. Max temp is 66C and fan speed of 90%. He lives about 20minutes away so the room temp would be the same.

My 1080 GTX F|E is OC'd +122mhz core/+402mhz memory, and it has never surpassed 64C, ever.
I would think the FTW would run cooler than the reference design, but I know the FTW version has had its fair share of issues. Their was a bios update for the FTW that was suppose to address the fan issues, did you flash it?
